News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

It seems the published dates need tidied up. Brave new world is showing as published in the 2000s.

Very cool though and love seeing all of the covers in various forms of condition.

Thank you!

This goes against the vibe of the constitution.
Here's the writeup from the experiments that claude did: https://claude.ai/artifact/X6WJVtKdL1LrhYuCMqdXvG#b9a4d3e2-8...
Thanks so much. 27b is a favourite model and last night my dev ran some benchmarks to achieve 133tks about 3.2x which changes the economics.
Re:Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:41PM (#50190520)
I once had to corner a guy trying to cut himself with a broken piece of mirror before he jumped off a second story balcony into the pool at a multi airbnb complex in Mexico. He'd taken some drugs and had a bad reaction and lost his mind. Cops picked him up running down the street.

I welcome this move to ban host rules that detract from the experience.

Re:AI-assisted proof of optimal packing for 11 squares on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @11:15AM (#49994004)
I like geometry. These packings show there are ugly numbers, like 51.
Re:Coding Is Not Solved on Monday September 28, 2026 @09:33PM (#49886933)
Yes they can and tomorrow the models will be better. By the time code hits prod and is used in anger the frontier will have moved.

It’s really not an acceptable opinion to have, that one day we’re going to be developers drowning in ai generated code. That’s a problem for opus 6 in 4-5 weeks time.

Developers are still very much needed, business people just don’t have the chops to wire a deterministic system together. But acting like some poor class naming or 2k loc file is the disaster it once was is dated.

> Referred to server resources and credentials as “LOOT”

It brings a warm feeling to know they exhibit the same characteristics of degeneracy as their human counterparts.

Re:Your car is selling your data on Sunday September 13, 2026 @09:22PM (#49690673)
If you'd like to buy this data, go talk to the guys over at Inrx. They will happily give you a product demo showing point to point trips recorded by connected onstar or whatever corresponding manf connected car service.
Re:EVE Online moves to Python 3 on Saturday August 29, 2026 @09:19PM (#49494795)
I’ve been doing this on a large system I’m building. Anything that takes longer than an hour to run, processes a high rate of events (maybe >5/s averaged over a day) or has downstream gpu waiting for it.

Python + tests cross compiled to rust has huge benefits for memory footprint and secondly cpu.

It’s allowing me to achieve wonders on a small amount of hardware.

Neil, Tim and Lorde need to get together, put on a gig at the basin, live aid style and save nz muso journalism!
Didn't you read? All the journalists got laid off. This is what we're left with
Re:Framework Data Breach on Friday August 07, 2026 @01:05AM (#49206070)
I bought one of their first garbage laptops. The ones that flatten the battery overnight.

Now 5 years later I'm being told I've had my data breached for a dashboard.

I don't even have the laptop anymore, I gave it away. I still have my Pentium M laptop from high school...

I wish we had a word for this, where everyone’s getting rich, there’s a run on stocks, but prices of assets are all going up. Some people are missing out completely whereas a select few hoard wealth in other forms. And of course the government starting to notice and trying to intervene.
Love a gearbox those guys over at P&W. Can't get enough gearboxes.
No, they settled that yesterday, so all is forgotten. Press releases were queued for today so just in the nick of time.
Re:SWE-1.7 Reach Near GPT 5.5 and Opus Intelligence on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @02:36PM (#48835660)
High tps is good for deeper agent thinking loops and openclaw etc. I was running cerebus recently doing some data heavy tasks, it managed to crash the server I was submitting posts to. 6 hour task down to ~1hr
Re:AMD Ryzen AI Halo – $4k AI Dev Kit on Monday July 06, 2026 @11:48AM (#48806339)
256gbs memory bandwidth is about 1/4 that of a 3090. It would be a better buy with half the memory at 4x the speed.
Re:Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @11:39AM (#48734303)
Good to know. Might be worth updating the motherboard then, it’s limited in pcie speed.
Re:Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development on Monday June 29, 2026 @04:07PM (#48724451)
I was doing some benchmarking last night on 2 3090s. The systems but old but I’m seeing 11tks 27b, 15tks 35b MoE.

The limited context is problematic. I’m not exactly sure what it’s got available but hermes was hit and miss on a prospecting job.

It does seem to be doing useful work but it’s not API call level quality

Re:The Boeing 747 Begins Its Final Descent on Sunday June 28, 2026 @04:34PM (#48711358)
Or more likely, that’s exactly how you make incredibly safe systems.

Not by introducing clean sheet unproven designs but by taking what works and improving any deficiencies over and over again.

Re:Underarm Bowling Incident of 1981 on Saturday June 27, 2026 @05:34PM (#48701982)
It’s an expectation as a New Zealander that you hold this against the aussies.

Honestly it should be on the citizenship test. If you answer favourably towards throwing underarm, your test is rescheduled the following week in Canberra.

Re:U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6 on Friday June 26, 2026 @07:09PM (#48693194)
Age verification for social media.

Approval lists for AI models.

Two sides of the same coin. The administration is taking the opportunity now on the back of fear mongering done by the labs. The labs get regulatory lock-in, the govt gets surveillance. Everybody (that matters) wins.

Re:GLM-5.2 is the step change for open agents on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @06:53PM (#48666565)
I signed up to a z.ai max account, $144. Hardly been able to use it as it 429s on most requests. They’re also refusing to refund me.
Re:AI Has Already Killed Academia as We Know It on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @12:25PM (#48662217)
Not sure about state side. But it my country they started enforcing the 32mg/100ml caffeine limit. Which was an effective ban.
The glasses are a great way to make content, for better or worse. I’ve only really seen the worse side of it on my feed.

However, this is temporary. When people have seen enough fpv content it will stop getting engagement and the glasses will be forgotten.

Re:AI Has Already Killed Academia as We Know It on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @08:12PM (#48653454)
15 years later I can still remember parts of my lectures that were interesting. The only thing I remember about studying is those now banned little energy drink shots.
Re:The truth about being a manager on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @02:45PM (#48649523)
I think you’re being very uncharitable and lacking in empathy. Senior management have much bigger issues to deal with that can sink a whole business. It’s so demanding it’s made into a full time role.

I would rather work for someone who has on their mind where the business is going to be 12 months from now rather than what story points are acceptable to bring into a sprint.
