I think the name is probably hurting adoption.

The creature it refers to pretty universally considered repulsive. I'm no psychologist or anything, but I would expect that to have an undue influence on even the most rational person.

Re:Is It Possible to Create a Decentralized Internet? on Wednesday June 24, 2020 @10:40AM (#23628359)
I don't know; do you want to build services that depend on random hardware on residential internet connections, hoping they stay online, while exposing metadata to the entire WAN or slowing it down with some kind of mixnet protocol?

To me, edge networks make more sense. Distribute your services across datacenters close to your users.

Stop implementing them, and move to key & pin. Use backup keys instead of resets. Stop depending on email and SMS.
[Meta] god damn it why is scrolljacking still a thing?

( And if they fail at this, why would I trust them with anything else? )

Shame!

Re:Snowpack 2.0 on Thursday May 28, 2020 @09:25AM (#23336940)
You'll likely still want to bundle for production, though, for the optimizations like minification, dead code elimination, module splitting, etc.

But yeah, JS is Crazy Town. It can be very frustrating.

( Be wary of dependencies. )

Re:Client-side content encryption on Tuesday April 28, 2020 @09:44AM (#23006869)
The web is Google's platform now, and they're locking it down.

It's time for a new web, and a new user agent with a minimal core so it isn't impossible to implement.

Re:Why P2P deserves another chance on Saturday April 25, 2020 @04:56PM (#22981420)
What I don't like about P2P is that it depends on peers being online at the same time, and it exposes metadata to the whole network instead of only law enforcement and sophisticated / well-funded attackers.
Have you tried reading it?

( Not sure "obfuscated" is the word I'd use, though. )

Re:Do We Need Specificity in CSS? (2015) on Friday April 17, 2020 @10:27AM (#22899235)
I really admire http://tachyons.io, with its principles of shallow cascade and low specificity.

( It really sucks to have to jump in and work with some project's massive blob of vestigial, conflicting styles. )

Is anyone working on an alternative to NPM?
Maybe the title should indicate what kind of project?
Is it still connecting to Google Fonts?

What are you demoing, and to whom?

( My guess is some kind of spam / astroturfing product. )

Re:Ask HN: Smallest laptop that is decent for coding? on Tuesday March 24, 2020 @08:58AM (#22674446)
I'm using a Pixelbook, and I like it, but it does feel large and heavy coming from a 12" Macbook.

Re:Ask HN: Smallest laptop that is decent for coding? on Tuesday March 24, 2020 @08:48AM (#22674378)
I loved mine (the original 12"), keyboard and all. Kept it with me all the time in a little sling bag... like a gun in holster. BANG! BANG!

Rocked it til it broke, and I'm still missing it 3 years later. I guess I need a new one.

Re:Ask HN: Why isn't everyone wearing face masks? on Saturday March 21, 2020 @04:43PM (#22649906)

In this clip the speaker argues that masks should be saved for health workers and those with symptoms.

( It's not an open source project; just a codename for the rewrite. )
Re:The web as a GUI toolkit on Friday February 14, 2020 @04:51AM (#22325279)
Try Choo (4kb ninja sword).

I think the design really nails it: just enough architecture, tagged template literal rendering, functional DOM tree composition with an optional component system.

I prefer to avoid stateful components in favor of pure rendering functions, as much as possible.

Choo's renderer is based on morphdom, which is interesting because it diffs against the real DOM rather than maintaining a virtual one.

I use monoapp, which is a fork of Choo allowing you to bring your own renderer (such as lit-html).

Re:Ask HN: Should I change name of Clippopo? on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @11:41AM (#22182531)
I don't think "popo" is really a problem, but the name just doesn't sound good to me. It feels awkward to a native English speaker.

If it were my project, I would first look to the generic TLDs, and choose one that pairs nicely with the word "clip" or "clips", or something similar (but not Clippy LOL).

I would look through https://domcomp.com, filter by "gTLDs" (and maybe ccTLDs also).

Here are a few I see at a glance (not checking whois):

    clip.stream
    clip.link
clip.dog (with a dog mascot / logo maybe)
    clip.show
    clip.watch
    clip.zone
    clip.rip
    clip.it / clips.it
    clips.lol
Good luck with your project :)
But this reduced alkalinity is caused directly by the ocean's CO2 absorption, not temperature, right?

Hey, I'm Corey

Location: Colombia (US Expat)

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: Yes

Technologies: JS, Node, Choo, Elm, Tachyons, Rasa (Vue is okay; React makes me feel icky; Angular makes me angry.)

Email: gmail, corey.trampe

Twitter: https://twitter.com/coreytrampe

I've been struggling as an independent developer / producer for like 15 years, consulting / freelancing intermittently when desperate. I need some stability for a change.

My focus for the past several years has been on conversational interfaces and "Messaging 2.0". But I've been struggling with no funding, and need to get a real job and work on Slater as a side project.

I am bright and passionate, and I'm looking for a family / gang to be loyal to, and for work that is meaningful and humane.

Re:A private social network. 75k to signup on Monday December 30, 2019 @07:45AM (#21912960)
Hey, keep us updated about traction.

I'm building a messaging app where users can set the subscription price of their own private group.

I agree that the barrier to entry / exclusivity of paid memberships is a value proposition in itself, and I'm curious to see where it goes.

Re:Age limit now 21 across US for cigarettes, tobacco products on Saturday December 28, 2019 @08:39AM (#21898825)
Isn't it true that the prefrontal cortex doesn't fully develop until around age 25?

If so, when will our laws reflect the fact that before that age, a person is not fully capable of considering the consequences of their choices?

Lending institutions, pornographers, and the military are still being allowed to exploit this incapacity of "young adults" in ways that may affect their entire lives.

How many of us are in debt, or injured, or killed because of this predation?

An 18 year old kid can choose to participate in pornography. Should we not consider this child abuse?
