If we want to reach the climate targets, we need to reduce our yearly CO2 "budget" per capita significantly. It was at about 800kg per person & year for 1.5 degrees a few years ago. As we have resigned that target already, we're at about 1500kg per year & person for the 2 degree target. (estimations of total CO2 budget until 2050, divided by #people on earth).
After 2050, that number per person should go to net zero.
So the way Air Conditioning is used is a significant problem. If the entire world would use it like it is used in the United States, we would get into a runaway situation. And we kind of are heading towards it.
Unfortunately, they forgot to check the name beforehand, and it turned out that "EY!" already existed: a gay porn magazine.
Yes, this really happened.
Democracy is not some magic spell that will bring the administration back to normality. Democracy only works as long as all players continue to act as if democratic decisions are binding. The executive branch have already shown they are more than willing to go against the judicial branch. They could do the same with the legislative branch. Questioning the legitimacy of elections, or actively rigging elections, is a possible next step in the same playbook.
We should focus on how the actions of the current administration work as means to consolidate their power. A powerful minority can rule over a majority, as long as their keys to power are upheld.
On the other hand, I visited a Canadian plant and the difference was stark. There was hardly any lighting, the floor was black with dirt, and the noise was unbearable. This was a small supplier about 10 years ago, so take it with a pinch of salt.
There is interesting effects from group dynamics and having a sense of purpose that can help people reintegrate into society. But the work environment has to be prioritised to make it easier on the workers. If the work place looks and acts like a prison camp, you are not going to get those benefits.
The point is that clean factories do exist, and manufacturing can be a good place to work. But it needs some work to make it so.
Lately, there have been some domestic actors filling in the gap. But it's still a significant cost increase compared to the glory days.
Sometimes, I feel like I lack agency; lile I'm not a primary character in my own life's story. It's so easy to sit back, follow the flow, and let the will of others dictate what I work with and spend my time on.
Working on changing that. But now I'm at an impasse, as it's difficult to know which of my interests and hobbies are coming from within me, and not just something I do to--for lack of a better way to express it-- please or impress others.
Current working theory is 'work less, play more', spend time with others, and being as attentive and receptive that I can.
Thank you for your words: they helped me
"Hyrdogen core clusters" might be around a bit longer
On a related note, it would be curious to see how many years a computer could keep chugging along silently doing its job. Of course dependent on a reliable power supply and that We stop our habit of breaking all dependencies every three months. Maybe thousands of years would be possible? A bit interesting to think about.
Perfectly possible to bike if you put on the right clothes. Even when it has been snowing, as the bike paths are cleared.
Several of my colleagues with kids bike every day as well, taking the kids with them on thei bike.
Might not be as comfortable as a air conditioned, well-cushioned car. But there are other benefits.
And many don't drive a Honda civic: they are driving the biggest, heaviest car they can get their hands on
So in the real world, (real) goodwill turns into more money. But in accounting, money turns into goodwill!
"In accounting, goodwill is an intangible asset recognized when a firm is purchased as a going concern. It reflects the premium that the buyer pays in addition to the net value of its other assets. Goodwill is often understood to represent the firm's intrinsic ability to acquire and retain customer business, where that ability is not otherwise attributable to brand name recognition, contractual arrangements or other specific factors" (Wikipedia)
A higher risk-free rate of return from e.g. Government bonds entails higher 'required rate of return' for all other investments in the economy
Suddenly, all companies need to increase their profits by 3-5 percentage points, while their costs are increasing across the board. So they need to increase sales (hard/expensive), reduce costs (might not be possible), or raise prices ('easy' to do, but customers might not accept it)
It's easily solved by installing Power Toys and using the search feature from there instead (activated with alt + space, like in Linux & Mac)
In Sweden, it's difficult to get rich through salaried work. Startups, inheritance, and housing are the only avenues. As an example, during the 'housing bubble' years, there were some buzz around people earning more from the appreciation on their house than they did from work.
With that said, Sweden has a high dollar-millionaires-per-capita. When you already have money, Sweden is almost a tax haven. But they pulled up the ladder behind them for most of the population.
I'm not a traffic engineer, but I believe better street design (meaning slowing cars down) and roundabouts could help. Building more public transport is also an option, but it might not be a feasible solution due to US City design.
US: 12,9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants Europe: 9.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants Sweden: 2,2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants Netherlands: 3,8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants

Oh well...
Downloaded a movie that's not available to buy anywhere via P2P? That will be $10.000.000 due to lost potential revenue. Seems fair.
Some vendors make an effort to support non-US layouts, others not so much (e.g Adobe, and recently Microsoft).
As a shortcut junkie, I've even changed the OS keyboard layout to enable more shortcuts to work, and memorising the location of special characters by feel. But that's not exactly an intuitive UX.
As some examples of shortcut keys that usually brings me dread are: /, ~, [, ], ;, |
I much prefer shortcuts in the form of "ctrl + letter"
It's a turn of phrase, where you are mocking someone by accompanying their expressed sadness (or whining) by "playing the world's smallest violin", e.g. by rubbing your fingers together
