Re:Which hobby do you think is most diverting and pleasurable? on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:42PM (#50320530)
I love hobbies where you create something. Sewing, leatherworking, woodworking, stuff like that. You can also take this and add more hobbies on top. Embroidery, leather or wood carving for example. Those hobbies are at there core very utilitarian (you get exactly what you want to have. The exact wallet or shirt or chair or whatever) but they allow for artistic freedom and expression as well.

I personally prefer to go as hand tools as possible. I don’t like loud noises. A sewing machine is the most I want to deal with. There is no noise in leather crafting that doesn’t come from straight up elbow grease. I’d not enjoy woodworking with power tools all weekend (which is why I haven’t picked that up yet. I haven’t figured out what I can expect to get done wir hand tools).

There are more hobbies than that of course. More garment / fiber stuff like weaving, knitting or crochet, making jewelry, welding, black smithing all with various degrees of resources required to get started. Another benefit as a man is that most of the time our trends are much more minimalist so you generally get away with larger and simpler items in those women dominated hobbies like sewing (except formal wear. Suits can fuck right off) so it’s not actually that hard to start one of those hobbies very casually and just end up with something you can use for the next decade and be fine. Like, rings, wallets, shirts, pants, sweaters are probably all gonna be text book „how to make an x“ without much details and be in fashion for the next 20 years.

Re:Were Software Engineers blue-collar workers all along? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @11:13AM (#50088894)
It’s violent because it used to be reality. Modern workers have the benefits they have (although they are getting less and less every year) because the only option for the working class was to break into the factory owners house and beat them to death. If the factory owners want to get back to that, that’s fine with me. We could have had another couple hundred years of 1 1/2 full time jobs per family, a house that you can afford in an area you like, a few weeks of vacation and health care that makes you feel like this is not something you need to worry about much. But nope. They didn’t want that and it’s gonna be really exciting (in a bad way) when 2/3 of the office workers get replaced by AI and pull down the wages of tradesmen in a desperate attempt to find employment.

I so wish somebody would go to prison for this.

I don’t know how restaurants work in America but generally you go to a restaurant to hang out here as well. I think service is generally slower. Drinks are also not free refills so a lot of restaurants do get fancy with their drinks so you try those as well. We usually also get at least desert and a coffee. Three hours is maybe not the norm but most restaurants plan in 2.5 hours slots.

Like, it’s not just eating. It’s socializing as well. You use the restaurant as a place for conversation.

If the average American fast food place here is reflective of the average American restaurant experience, I think that’s a big difference. Even the most run down gyros or kebab place that also sells burgers and pizza will have tables outside on the street with ash trays and will sell you a cold drink. But even five guys, which is a lot more expensive than those places, has lighting that is more suitable for surgery than chatting.

If you go to places like France, people will get an espresso and a little thing of olives and just sit there smoking and people watching. Alone. That’s maybe a bit much for me but a 2 to 3 hour dinner with friends seems very normal for me.

Oh and now I have a kid so a lot of times the waiters will play with the kid or the environment is suitable for the kid to just play alone and then it’s a good opportunity to just have a cold drink or a coffee with the my wife in peace after a meal so even with only my family we’d do 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Re:RamenHaus on Saturday August 01, 2026 @09:34AM (#49134301)
They’re not that bad in Germany. The ramen places are actually more noisy.
Re:RamenHaus on Saturday August 01, 2026 @08:24AM (#49133813)
I don’t think an hour at McDonald’s is that crazy either though.
Re:RamenHaus on Saturday August 01, 2026 @06:30AM (#49133048)
Happy you enjoyed the ramen in my home city!
Re:RamenHaus on Saturday August 01, 2026 @06:28AM (#49133044)
In Düsseldorf that’s not the case. The Japanese restaurant are very distinctly less chill than other restaurants. Like, where you’d usually spend 3 hours in a normal restaurant, it is kinda expected that you eat and leave a Ramen shop within an hour.
Like he said the GmbH is just the wrong legal form of his company. You can register a Kleingewerbe online over night and an UG within 2 weeks and that waiting period is only 2 weeks because it's such a simple and cheap process that notaries won't make time for you and they are busy people so you just take the next free slot they have in their calendar. So if you are lucky you can get an appointment the next day.

My wife works for a notary and most of the time people are really pushing to get an appointment but then fail to register a bank account on time so they have to wait a couple of weeks anyway without anybodies fault but their own.

Also this is not some secret knowledge. Like, these are not some tricks you learn over time this is something you could technically just ask a tax consultant or a notary. In fact the notary even likes it if you do that because if you try to be clever on your own you are most likely going to cause them more work. Like, you can literally go to a notary and say "this is my business. What should I do?" and they are either going to just do an UG with you or sent you to a tax consultant just to be sure.

Like, we have notaries because and they are as expensive as they are because they are supposed to consult you in legal matters and they are required for so many things so that you don't accidentally mess something up that is complicated.

Going to a notary really makes this so easy. You just sit there, dude's gonna read his legalese text and then sums it up in 2 sentences for you. Didn't get something? Ask questions. That's why you are there. That's their job.

It's really only difficult if you need a lil something for the AppStore for a side hustle and then try to get a GmbH straight away without ever consulting anybody that is literally only there to consult you and make it easier for you.

No he doesn't. You can register a Kleingewerbe at the Gewerbeamt online ([1] for NRW) and start right away. You can create an UG (literally supposed to fill the gap between a GmbH and a Kleingewerbe) within 2 weeks depending on the notary. And those 2 weeks come from the fact that the notary has better stuff to do than a UG registration and therefore probably doesn't make time specifically for you.

If you want to start a business and you don't need to pay for an office or whatever (because you can actually use those 25k for something), you can literally start over night. If you need a proper company that limits your liability, you can literally start in 2 weeks.

[1] https://service.wirtschaft.nrw/unternehmensgruendung/gewerbe...

We have an UG for that. A GmbH is simply the wrong legal form for that sort of thing. You can create an UG with a single Euro on the bank account (and then immediately go bankrupt once you need to pay the notary).
The EU would be really stupid to give you a good deal. Like, for self preservation purposes alone it would be really beneficial if Switzerland would just really suffer after leaving the EEA especially because a lot of shit was going down in Europe and the world after brexit. Can’t really point at the cost of living in the uk and say that’s brexit when petrol is almost 2€ in Germany as well.

But a Switzerland that just collapses surely but surely? That’s gonna send a message.

You don’t have dawn syndrome? Mine shoots up to 200 in the morning without food. If I don’t eat breakfast I take 5 units fast acting in the morning to keep the levels down.

I just don’t see pens as so much of a hassle that I’d give up the control of a pen for the convenience of a pump.

Lots of mean things she writes in her blog post for a people pleaser though.

Like, I get it, but the blog should then be about how being a people pleaser almost killed her and not how bad support was at reading her mind.

That’s kinda why I don’t want a pump. I’d rather deal with it myself than have some garbage corporation cut every corner and save every cent they can on a device that is keeping me alive.

I’d rather have a glucose pump to be honest. I don’t need long lasting insulin so I don’t really need to care about dying in my sleep but lows scare me more than highs.

GDPR made rating agencies a lot more transparent than they used to be. There was a lot of guessing about why your Schufa score might be bad in Germany. I can now get a detailed breakdown of the data they have of me for free.
I don’t think it is controversial that AI tools are good enough at crud endpoints that it is totally viable to just let it run through the grunt work of hooking up endpoints to a service and then you can focus on the interesting aspect of the application which is exactly that service.
Re:US Diesel prices surpass $5.38 on Friday March 27, 2026 @04:36PM (#47547925)
Petrol is just s as expensive though
Re:Hold on to Your Hardware on Friday March 27, 2026 @04:28PM (#47547817)
Yep. I graduated in 2017 and jobs were already mostly web. I’d love to work on native applications but nobody is hiring for that and of course because nobody is hiring for that I don’t have a job like that and the Qt I learnt in university is not gonna get any more relevant over time but I don’t have a good reason to keep that skill up to date and if I have to solve a problem I might as well write a TUI or CLI application because that’s easier than Qt or whatever…
I think my computer is pretty. I have the black with brown wood panel case that is super popular and then all black components except for the RGB LED gpu manufacturer logo on the GPU. Looks pretty nice and sleek.

But I also had to look past the RGB nonsense. The GPU was basically an accident.

I think doing this on an OS level might be the most privacy focused way to do this but the issue is that this is not going to be the way this is implemented.

Like, I’m not American and in Germany we have ID cards that actually have your age encoded on an NFC chip in the card and an ID number that encodes the age. Like, age is part of the ID number and checksum.

You could totally do all of this age verification offline on device and just expose an API that offers the age of the user to applications. You’d never need to talk to the internet for this, the API just says if you are a minor or adult, the browser can pass that to websites who don’t need to collect personal data and everything is fine.

But that’s not going to happen. It’s gonna be some AI facial recognition kinda garbage that is gonna send your face in every angle to Apple or Microsoft or another third party.

As is common these days they are going to try really hard to absolve you as the user of any responsibility for the sake of protecting kids so they can’t let this be a simple offline thing where your personal information never ever have to leave the device because what if kids find a way around it? Well the obvious answer is don’t let your kids just use a computer without supervision but if people would do that we’d not be in need of this garbage anyway.

Doing the lords work here. Thanks.
Re:German government comes out against Chat Control on Wednesday October 08, 2025 @01:53AM (#45512549)
Literally not what I said.
Re:German government comes out against Chat Control on Wednesday October 08, 2025 @01:51AM (#45512531)
No. The idea that NATO wants war with Russia is pathetic.
Re:German government comes out against Chat Control on Tuesday October 07, 2025 @04:37PM (#45508518)
Relax. NATO countries pushing for war with Russia is a far right talking point. He assumed that this line of thinking was pushed.

There are so many Poles in Germany there is no way in hell Germans would as a collective actively sabotage any defensive war efforts if Poland got invaded. I honestly don’t see it with any EU member but I don’t think there is a seizable number of Germans that don’t know somebody from Poland or with family in Poland.

Ukraine before 2014 was just a smaller Russia to us. Barely a Ukrainian community in Germany, unable to tell the language apart, unable to even read the script. Poland was never that. In modern Germany, Polish people have always been our neighbors, friends, colleagues, care takers for our kids, the sick and the old, skilled tradesmen, owners of the good restaurants in town and many more things.

Even the jokes about thieves that were so popular when I was in school stopped.

Re:Ask HN: Has anyone else been unemployed for over two years? on Saturday September 20, 2025 @04:50AM (#45311614)
Literally what people said in 1933.
This is true of course but the counter argument is that running your own infrastructure is probably not a problem for international criminal gangs but your group chat with the boys is not gunna go through some AI garbage filter and in the end we are still going to get our cars stolen but now the police is knocking because I called Merz a fascist bastard and once the actual fascist win an election they are going to knock on everybody’s door who called Weidel a pick me girl in Turkish.

In summary, without stupid jokes about German politics, the actual stated goal is unachievable but the real world consequences in a Europe that is sprinting to the far right are incredibly dangerous.

I had that too but I think it’s kinda weird. Like, high readings should be followed up with long term blood pressure measurements. And maybe the recommendation to get your own device and check regularly at home.

At least that’s what happened to me.

To be fair though, this high readings problem at the doctors office went away when I lost weight (from a BMI of 25 to a BMI of 22. both in normal weight range).

Damn. When I had a child in Germany, our version of CPS came over and told me what fun things the city offers for children and asked me about my plans for day care and how I can get help to get a spot.

I once called them because the day care lady of a friend‘s kid is a bit of an idiot and kinda scared us about mass closure of day care centers and it was probably the nicest interaction I’ve ever had with a government agency.

But from what I’ve heard, America in general is a whole other beast both regarding expectations for parents, trust in the kids and the trouble you can get in for minor things.

Not sure about dedicated servers but Hetzner is a bit cheaper on VPS if I remember correctly.
