News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I have some news for you about typing code by hand...
I discovered his videos a few days ago. I imagine the "algorithm" pushed those into a lot of HN users' feeds.

Just this morning, I was wondering if it would make sense to share it on HN. And here it it on the front page. What a small world.

Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:16AM (#50285916)
It's funny how my experience with SO is nowhere near as bad as what HN usually reports.

I admit that my first few questions earned me a lot of downvotes due to their poor quality. But it humbled me and taught me the importance to create minimal reproducible examples.

After that, some of my questions were answered in depth by experts. I was blown away and very grateful that some random stranger would take the time to answer such a niche question I had.

Besides, I've seen colleagues of mine whom I consider brilliant but whose questions on public forums were bad... They give too many details, leave out part of the context, don't make it easy to reproduce their error, ask vague questions, and so on. I wonder if it's for the same reasons that HN has trouble with SO.

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:27AM (#50258944)
Honestly, skimming through it, the writing style made it pretty obvious to that it had been written by an AI. Pangram also indicates that the text is "100% AI-generated." The disclaimer isn't even honest, I doubt AI helped to just build a "draft" of this article...

I know, this ship has long sailed, but I just can't get used and accept this kind of writing.

Re:Bringing uv and ty together on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:40AM (#50219320)
I love Astral’s tools, but I wonder why the CLI feels so fragmented.

- Now, ty is integrated into uv, while ty is technically being part of ruff [1], but ruff is not integrated into uv.

- The formatter is part of ruff, but uv also have an undocumented "format" command, which does not produce the same results.

- Actually, ruff is integrated into uv, but you must call it through "uv tool run ruff".

I guess I'd like "uv format" and "uv lint" to become the standard commands.

You can also add that the back sprites during the battle aren't positioned correctly: the cut-off at the bottom is supposed to be aligned with the UI and go unnoticed. ;)
Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:19AM (#50055329)
This is extremely short-sighted. Software is not a static product. "Improve code quality" translates into being able to add features more quickly and with less risk of bugs. For an open-source project, this also gives readers the opportunity to understand the codebase and learn from it.
Re:Knuth Reward Check on Saturday October 10, 2026 @12:46PM (#50034662)
I'm surprised we haven't heard of anyone running an AI on Donald Knuth's books to generate the largest collection of checks in existence...
Re:AI Makes Me Sad on Friday October 02, 2026 @12:07PM (#49935126)
Can we please stop with this oversimplified dichotomy, which is repeated ad nauseam in every thread?

There is more to software engineering than just "coding" or "building," and it's not even correct to oppose the two.

Thank you. I've been frustrated by harnesses hijacking the terminal and breaking basic features such as scrolling and text selection.

It even sends BEL when the agent completes, which makes so much sense, yet Pi never implemented it.

I'm definitely going to use it over the next few days and hopefully make the switch.

Re:Bend 2 and the Vibe-Coding Trap on Friday September 18, 2026 @08:34AM (#49753498)
I haven't seen a language launch this controversial on HN since V-lang in 2019.

Glad we finally have some new drama to follow, definitely more entertaining than AI news.

Re:Shutting down our public encrypted DNS on Friday September 04, 2026 @04:18PM (#49569724)
Unfortunately, Quad9 is censoring some domains in Europe (notably in France and Italy) following injunctions issued by rights holders [1]. That was not the case with Mullvad's DNS.

I am genuinely puzzled as to why this kind of vibe-coded site are so popular on HN.

I consider the crowd here to be much smarter than I am, which is why I enjoyed the links that were shared and the discussions that followed.

The website is pretty, but the statistics and stories are the main point. Yet we are being fed hallucinated false claims, and somehow, that doesn't seem to be a problem...

I don't understand why it gets so many upvotes. We know Claude can create websites like this brilliantly now. The novel and interesting part is the transformation of the data. But if that part is sloppy, what's the point?
