News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I actually leased a Kia EV6 recently without too much research into the charging situation, assuming that in 2025 it was probably pretty well figured out, and I could just do as you propose and just charge in small bursts at the grocery store etc. But:

- It didn't come with a home charger at all. They're not cheap.

- It came with a J1772 adapter, but no CCS adapter. The car itself has NACS. So I'm limited to Tesla superchargers, which are expensive, unless I buy a new adapter (not cheap, or cheap, but suspicious Temu brands).

- The experience of using all of these different branded charging points is _awful_. You need to create 10 different accounts with a bunch of terrible apps. The maps to find charging infrastructure seem universally awful.

- Pretty common to arrive at a charging location to find that some nutjob has hacked off all the charging cables. The only reliably maintained charge points are the larger, more expensive high speed charging locations.

I think a lot of the issues would be solved if I was more committed to the car and the house that I'm living in, and installed a home charger to charge at night. But the charging experience out in the world is absolutely _dismal_ when compared to gas vehicles, even if you change your behavior.

It'll need to be shut down anyway to pull the giant metal chain out. You might as well do it right away. Patients can and will be rescheduled to other MRI facilities.
Re:You can now buy eggs from in-ovo sexed hens on Monday July 21, 2025 @11:52AM (#44636670)
I suppose that is true. But I imagine that the scale of egg incubation to produce hens is a relatively small portion of total egg production, since each hen produces many eggs. You'd probably have to compare the cost of incubating an egg and the labor to manually sex the chick to the per-egg cost of this technology. I would be surprised if that comes out in favor of the in-egg-sexing tech right now, but it would be great if it did.

Sexing is typically done immediately after hatching, yes.

They don't feed male chicks - from the first paragraph:

> in the United States alone, approximately 350 million male chicks are routinely culled each year, typically by methods such as maceration (being ground up alive).

The "Not a Simple Operation" section really stands out for its GPT writing style ("While [pro], it's important to note [con]", "In short...").
I went to one of these this summer and had to create a full corporate account online before the people at the front desk could sell me a day pass, and I was bombarded with emails for months afterwards about signing up the rest of my "company"

I would add https://blumira.com to that list; it's more mature than at least a few of these (I'm a former employee)

What makes you call your current review culture “sane”? I’m not sure I have seen that yet in my career.
Re:Apple's Vision Pro headset deserves to be ridiculed on Monday June 05, 2023 @07:08PM (#36205544)
that's exactly what it does.
It’s definitely related to the moral license thing in my opinion. As a cyclist there are a lot of bad drivers out there, but I’ve learned to treat every Tesla like I do lifted trucks. I think they feel that they are at the top of the moral hierarchy and forget about pedestrians and cyclists completely.

Not all of them, obviously, but enough.

I got into Berklee for piano performance, couldn’t do more than a few scales fluently despite lessons my whole life.

I think it's actually basically the same. Being a clean, organized cook is probably positively correlated with making good food, but it's not strictly necessary. If someone is writing sloppy code but shipping a project of this overall quality without leaking the "low quality" of their implementation, then I wouldn't presume to call them a "bad dev" - I would probably conclude that they're more efficient than I am at prioritizing where to spend organizational energy.
Yeah I don’t think it’s worth the money, the extra QC is worth a lot to me.
I guess they’re more popular in China - you can get good quality Chinese fountain pens online for a lot less than these brands.

Come on. Yes. Here's a screenshot if it helps: https://i.imgur.com/BepKMt1.png - It gives FEN notation itself, so I prompted it with FEN, but I have also tried describing the position of each piece explicitly.

Yes, I paid to use GPT-4.
Re:I played chess against ChatGPT-4 and lost on Sunday March 19, 2023 @01:54AM (#35216405)
Yeah it seems to have some model for how chess works, it gives convincing explanations for wrong/illegal moves, and you can generally see there’s some connection between the move and the heuristics it’s babbling about. But it hasn’t built a working internal model of the board that it can manipulate, it can’t search the tree of possible moves.
Re:I played chess against ChatGPT-4 and lost on Sunday March 19, 2023 @01:21AM (#35216285)
I couldn’t get it to solve a basic mate-in-one problem with one rook on the board. It seems to completely not understand how to move the pieces.

You might be around the same age as me. Michigan didn't ban smoking in restaurants until 2010, when I graduated high school. I think some (most?) restaurants phased it out earlier, but the sort of places we used to hang out at back then in small-town MI certainly did not, so it remained a common part of our lives all through childhood and high school. I kind of forgot about that.
Re:Apple Introduces Oceanic+ on Monday November 28, 2022 @11:54AM (#33775993)
Yes, agree completely. Would be happy to have just this on a 60 foot dive. And will be happy to see it on the wrists of other divers on the boat, as I think it will make them safer vs the status quo. Just wouldn't _buy_ it for that purpose myself, I think there are better options if you research a bit.

Also, I never dive past recreational limits, I'm not a technical diver by any means. I would simply have philosophical concerns about a piece of equipment that could provide accurate information beyond recreational limits, but simply doesn't for "legal" reasons. It probably makes sense to people - "oh they don't want to be liable for giving advice past recreational limits", but other companies seem to have navigated this legal issue and choose to provide accurate information regardless of this arbitrary limit.

As another commenter pointed out, I have no idea what it does past 130 feet, but the disclaimer that it _cannot_ be used past 130 feet, rather than one that says you _shouldn't_ use it past 130 feet, is somewhat concerning to me, even if I don't approach those limits.

Re:Apple Introduces Oceanic+ on Monday November 28, 2022 @11:28AM (#33775623)
I think you're saying that PADI's recommendation that "you should have a backup plan" means implicitly that you should dive with two computers. They wouldn't make that an implicit recommendation, they would make it an explicit one. Which they do not. At least not for open water recreational diving.

The backup plan for recreational open water diving would typically be to end the dive if your computer fails, not to continue computerless. At the point that your computer failed, you should have been within no-deco limits, which you can confirm with your partner's computer to a reasonable margin of safety, so you can ascend safely.

Re:Apple Introduces Oceanic+ on Monday November 28, 2022 @11:24AM (#33775570)
I'm not assuming anything - and I'm not speaking as a pundit on Apple, I'm speaking as a consumer in the target audience with specific, important questions about a safety-critical piece of equipment. The answer to my question is not clear from this marketing release, and I'm simply saying that affects my likelihood to purchase.

Also, in the case of lack of evidence either way, assuming it would shit the bed is _definitely_ the right approach in diving.

Re:Apple Introduces Oceanic+ on Monday November 28, 2022 @11:16AM (#33775453)
Oh, cool! It looks like that's the limit of Apple's Depth app, as well, which is what I found when I searched, and assumed it was the limit of the watch.

Well that's definitely better - I wonder what happens when you go under 130 feet, though. A dedicated dive computer would at least provide accurate information, rather than throwing you to the wolves because you exceeded some legal limit.

Also on the plus side, some of the existing air pressure transmitters use bluetooth, so if they could get that working, they'd actually be one of the cheapest air-integrated computers on the market.

(edit: they do not use bluetooth, they use low-frequency radio ~38khz)

I think I'll stick with my Shearwater Peregrine though, pros and cons considered.

Re:Apple Introduces Oceanic+ on Monday November 28, 2022 @11:02AM (#33775264)
That sounds like overkill CYA from the legal department. Diving with two computers is not standard protocol in no-decompression recreational diving. It is in technical diving. But if you're in open water, and within no-deco limits, if your computer fails, you can always just end the dive.
Re:Apple Introduces Oceanic+ on Monday November 28, 2022 @10:58AM (#33775201)
I think this looks amazing for warm-water vacation divers - typically they are stuck with rental equipment, which usually means a cheap, dated computer on a bulky console. Having a well-designed UI will definitely improve these divers safety - the last boat dive I went on, an experienced diver blew past no-deco limits because he didn't understand his unfamiliar rental computer.

That being said, I can't personally imagine taking the Apple Watch Ultra to, say, 80-90 feet if it's only rated to 130. It's just too expensive.

He really likes to be unreachable - he's known to disappear into the wilderness to fly fish for days on end, and no one knows where he is.
There is the NHANES dataset, which has a ton of blood/urine test data for various environmental contaminants, along with tons of other data columns like cancer diagnoses, age of onset, etc.
