Re:Audi announces end of combustion A4, A6 and A8 models on Saturday January 23, 2021 @10:55PM (#25889054)
Hybrids are more favoured in Europe because of stricter fuel economy standards and emission regulation as well as taxes on fuel and on cars based on fuel consumption. Being hard to explain or consumer preference doesn't have to do with it.
Re:Electric cars make up 54% of cars sold in Norway in 2020 on Tuesday January 05, 2021 @12:06PM (#25647671)
Literally everything you said is wrong. The figure does not include hybrids, driving around a battery does not consume more energy, and yes they are being used.
There is no "uk (and the rest of the worlds) attitude to global warming".

There's s a small group of rogue countries like US trying to do their best to burn the planet while undermining climate agreements and not doing anything about climate change at 16+ tons of annual CO2 per capita, while some others are doing a whole lot, for example UK has pretty about halved their emissions from already a lot lower starting point, from 10.3 to 5.6 tons in the last 40 years.

Actual research vs. "back-of-the-envelope maths". I'll go with the research.
>The overall lifecycle CO2 benefit of EVs and hybrids as they stand is minimal.

That's simply not true.

>Net emission reductions from electric cars and heat pumps in 59 world regions over time

>..We show that already under current carbon intensities of electricity generation, electric cars and heat pumps are less emission intensive than fossil-fuel-based alternatives in 53 world regions, representing 95% of the global transport and heating demand. Even if future end-use electrification is not matched by rapid power-sector decarbonization, it will probably reduce emissions in almost all world regions.

Outperforming indeed.
What's the relevance of your comment to the topic?
Opinion polling is only valid in places where you can freely have opinions.
What problems would you rate as more severe than being gassed alive or having your organs stolen?
Tell the 6 million Jews, hundreds of thousands to million+ Romanis, and hundreds of thousands of disabled who were systematically exterminated by gassing, shootings, starvation and various other means that being outlawed is a "hypothetical risk". Even beyond WW2 to say what you said is so incredibly against any form of historical understanding that one must start to wonder what your motive with it is.
Most outlets say it's from 2018[1] and New York Times seems to have the original which points out that it's from 2018.[2]

1. You can't claim your risk of dying using a particular method of transportation is above another method just by looking at per mile death rates unless you travel a similar distance in both, or say it in a context of making a decision of using one or the other to travel from place to place (although to be precise the length of the trip depends somewhat on the used method).

2. The commercial airlines figure which you've used is not from using the particular method of transportation, 737 max, which the use of you are justifying with the comparison.

3. If you wear a helmet, don't ride drunk, don't speed and otherwise follow traffic rules it will make riding a motorcycle a lot safer than average.

Re:Intel desktop board BIOS update end-of-life on Monday November 18, 2019 @06:16PM (#21569155)
Since this fabricated "15 year old" hardware claim is repeated for who knows what reason, I'm going to have to spam the debunking of it as well.

It's nowhere near to being true. Software is going to be gone for haswell generation,[1] boards originally released just 6 years ago[2].

Just 6 years from launch of the products.

Sandy Bridge is not the newest microarchitecture generation of the processors Intel made motherboards for. That's Haswell series (Q87, B85 chipset branding went with this)[1], launched in June of 2013. Boards like DQ87PG, DH87RL, DB85FL.[2] These also have the same notice of end of bios availability.[3]

Re:Boeing Sales and Profits Plummet as 737 Max Crisis Continues on Thursday October 24, 2019 @01:35AM (#21341919)
Worse than that: Even after the plane was basically grounded by all other significant regulators, FAA was made to take a show flight on board the aircraft, and Trump directly discussed the matter with the company. Grounding was then announced by Trump. Didn't exactly give confidence of FAA acting independently.
What do you then suggest? Going to war about it, or just letting territorial annexations continue?

If you have no better alternative, what reason is there to be upset?

Re:India has the highest data usage per smartphone on Friday June 21, 2019 @05:49PM (#20246570)
That is if you define $40/mo "up to 5 Mbps" as decent.

Re:Shanghai City in panoramic view in 195 gigapixels on Wednesday December 19, 2018 @10:00AM (#18715994)
By looking at the river you can notice a moiré pattern with lines both horizontal and vertical to the camera, although the vertical lines are more apparent. I figure these would be either artifacts from the stitching process, or limitations of the lens itself. The effect also correlates in size and shape with out of focus areas, which can likewise be found in the river, signaling that it is indeed an artifact caused by the panorama.

I guess you can take this as an exercise for the future when you can't quite figure out whether you are stuck in a virtual reality or not.

Re:EU to stop changing the clocks in 2019 on Tuesday September 18, 2018 @04:42AM (#18013538)
I don't think that's a highly informed comment. As far as I'm aware choosing time zones has always been a member state decision, where as clock time changes have been regulated by EU in order to be uniform. Nothing changes in regards to time zone regulation. It's just a political expression to say that you can choose to be in "summer time". In reality there's no such thing as permanent summer time.

The reason why it's politically expressed this way is because there is a strong majority consensus that summer time probably isn't useful, but there's isn't one about which time zone should be used. So expressing it this way makes it easier for the politicians.
