That's an interesting opening sentence considering you then iterated what I said about the specifics of sports betting.

I hate semantic and pedant arguments on the Internet but this is worth it:

We don't legalize things in America, we illegalize things.

The constitution doesn't give us rights, it actually takes them away so our government can operate.

We give freedom lip service in this country but if you truly believe in it this is what we must drill into people in civics class and in discourse.

This is in fact what happened with sports betting. They wrote a law making it illegal. That law got struck down, so we are back to the default which is it is legal.

We can make it illegal again to address the court ruling, but it's an uphill battle.

My retort is always:

Saying 'Correlation isn't causation' doesn't disprove causation.

This is why DARE failed. You can't blatantly lie about everything just because you want what's best for people. At some point people find out you're a liar and don't believe a thing you say.

And left handed people.

According to my dad the Catholic Church tried when he was in elementary school, but he brags that Satan was too strong with him.

Did not enjoy nor find useful.

Just seemed like a high schooler who read Howard Zin and is reciting all the ways America is horrible. Very emo or goth or nihilistic or just bleak. Not a fun or thought provoking read.

November pumpkins is where the money is.
This *1000. It's a supreme failure on our educational system and society at large that most Americans don't think about our government and our rights in these terms.

The Constitution actually takes away our rights. It has to, it lays out the powers the government has over us. Even the bill of rights doesn't technically give us rights---it explicitly details the ways our government cannot operate.

Re:A rough guide for going back to the Moon on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @09:56AM (#49712604)
Thats a ridiculous comment. The thing about the space race is we were getting are ass kicked, then said 'Oh the finish line is actually this. Oh look we kicked your ass "

It was like we lost the first 9 events of a decathalon and then won the 1500 and declared ourselves the winner.

Been impeached twice. What do you envision a third doing?
Re:Coyote v. Acme (1990) on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @04:58PM (#49634193)
Agree. Seemed more like something that should go direct to streaming instead of big screen.

Decent, not amazing.

Re:What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @04:28PM (#49633735)
It boggles my mind that the government has privatized currency to these people.

Crazy-person-but-actually-really practical-idea:

Nationalize one if these networks. Maybe Discover.

The US government should provide us digital currency. The simplest way is to force the current systems to do that. All that rent they collect in terms of transactions fees shouldn't be profit for a private business but fees of the government.

Sustainability?

What resource will we run out of if we continue to piss in traditional urinals?

Has bullshit marketing terms invaded scientific papers now as well?

My favorite quote for 10 years was from my 1993 college math professor:

You will never go wrong attributing a pithy quote to Benjamin Franklin or Mark Twain.

And then the internet became popular.

One if the worst discussion I've seen on HN:

I did this... Well I did this... My experience was .. Me me me... anecdote anecdote anecdote.

Nothing but humblebrags, dismissals of others experiences with their experiences and reminiscings.

Not trying to go ad hominem, but that's a very ignorant statement.

1. Which ones? I used to be able to stereotype with the best of them, but I cant quickly come up with any protected class that is assigned as teetotalers.

2. Saying you're not hiring someone because they don't drink is a perfectly valid reason for not hiring someone, even if it's a cover for not hiring them because of protected class membership. The laws protecting protected classes are super weak. It is virtually impossible to prove that is the sole reason they weren't hired. All you need is an actual other reason to not hire them--and of course don't put into writing that the real reason is their protected class membership.

Re:Modern decor may be straining people's brains on Saturday July 11, 2026 @02:48PM (#48874595)
Wouldn't a non-grassy flat and open area serve the same purpose?
But here's the thing, AI will be the source of truth soon. For many it already is.

The dumber we (humanity in general) get, the smarter AI appears to the average person. You'll be a heretic or just deemed crazy if you call BS on something AI says in 50 years--regardless.

Re:Building an HTML-first site doubled our users overnight on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @12:18PM (#48478612)
Dude, you know what he meant. Don't be the internet pedant. No need to be the protector of your class, especially one so inconsequential as "literal 60 year olds".

Instead of "old person" he put a number on it. (Cue the people who need to cut me down because I used a male pronoun for an unknown poster)

You are learning, but you haven't learned.

You didn't build a nest egg, you saved for a down payment.

You didn't rebuild your nest egg, you created a sinking fund for your home.

You praise yourself for not treating your home as a credit card, but your left hand is still borrowing money from yourself.

You've recognized there's an issue, but don't fool yourself into thinking you've done anything about it

Re:AI sticker shock hits corporate America on Thursday May 28, 2026 @09:31AM (#48308725)
>>>EDIT: Sorry it was a really clever joke.

I sincerely hope that was your attempt at sarcasm.

So a random poster makes an assertion and rather than Google it and verify it yourself you throw out a request for another random poster to concur? And that concurrence you will take at face value and then believe the original assertion?
Re:How Diamonds Are Made on Sunday May 17, 2026 @05:58PM (#48173559)
>>>Spending 18x to 20x more on something that looks exactly the same and serves the same purpose just wasn’t logical to me.

That's up there with people who brag about only smoking when they drink and vegetarians for moral reasons who eat fish.

You framed a feelings based, adherence to tradition, no basis of actual functionality as a rational, logical decision, just because there was a worse decision to be made.

Agree. Further, not sure if 'black and white' is an idiom about clarity or an attempt to inject race into it.
Re:Maladaptive Frugality on Saturday May 02, 2026 @08:42PM (#47992063)
Disagree. Like financial independence, physical fitness in later years is something you can work towards and is well within nearly everyone's reach.

Granted, both take focus and long term discipline which people who lack both chalk up to luck.

Directly? I do not think it means what you think it means.

Hate the guy all you want, even for this, but don't try and juice it another 20% with emotional words that are ultimately incorrect.

In the 80's and 90's I was be inspired by every NASA plan they announced--new celestial body being explored, new type of craft, new rocket, new telescope. In the naughts and early 10's I still had a sense of hope and aww but was becoming jaded. Now when I see announcements like these I actually get mad.

Layoff everyone on the PR team and just do shit. When you are 95% of the way there and actually have some sort of prototype, announce a hard plan and details. No interviews, no artist renditions of shit that's never going to happen, no congratulating yourself for ideas and hopes, just get shit done--that's the best PR. James Webb and was a constant massive let down because of its continuously slipping deadlines. Years and years late and billions over budget....but then...it actually happened and it was amazing.

NASA, quit setting our expectations if you never meet them. Just do shit and let us be amazed when it happens.
