i love this. it really shows you someone else's perspective.

had you drawn a different lot in life things would be very different.

imo it is a good example of Rawl's veil of ignorance thought experiment.

How would you design the world if you will be randomly dropped into any position anywhere on earth.

well done.

not necessarily. if he bought your car and traded up from a real clunker with worse fuel efficiency the net result is likely better.

other way to deal with intermittency is to dynamically price electricity. then people can shut off/on usage in response. many activities do not need to be done exactly at a certain time.

it doesn’t all need to be fixed on the supply side

Re:Riffusion – Stable Diffusion fine-tuned to generate Music on Thursday December 15, 2022 @11:55AM (#34002326)
is classical music harder? noticed you didn't have any classical music tracks. i wonder if it is because it is more structured?
this is probably more due to pipes freezing
i bet it needs to do some checks to verify someone didn’t plug in a fake battery, the user has a valid subscription etc
Re:Divorce in the rich world is getting less nasty on Friday January 21, 2022 @09:39PM (#30032735)
i get it but in reality in many families someone is sacrificing their career for the family unit. i don’t think it’s unfair to take that opportunity cost into consideration

superchargers are not too bad. 30 mins at a charging station while you grab food and stretch your legs is all it takes.

i wish there was a service that would just tell me what fees i needed to pay. this was a big pain in the butt and most of the value i paid for for professional help.
this is really amazing. as a rails person who enjoyed having ppl much more experienced than I give me best practices "rails", django always felt a bit daunting the few times I tried it because there weren't as many best practices to follow.

Very much enjoyed this post and it gives me confidence to try my next project in django

Re:Tales from Prediction Markets on Saturday April 03, 2021 @11:11PM (#26686599)
very interesting stories. tells you a lot about how inefficient markets are. reminds me of "reminisces of a stock operator"
asking people to store something for a very long time is very hard. Take the nuclear waste from the US atom bomb tests in the pacific. They capped the thing w/ tons of concrete but sea level rise and cracks are making it inevitable its going to cause a mess. And thats literally less than a century ago. The half life of these things is tens of thousands of years.

I think you underestimate how 'temporary' many seemingly strong structures are and how high the temptations to cut costs are. Its very easy to be like "welll...this'll probably hold. I'm sure of it."

Re:Griddy Is Shutting Down on Saturday February 27, 2021 @04:23AM (#26283681)
there are stories of many empty office buildings fully powered with the lights on throughout the whole thing. Its possible if they were on a more price sensitive system those commercial property owners would have opted to shut off more of the power.
