Re:Ask HN: What default model do you use and why? on Saturday September 12, 2026 @02:34PM (#49675599)
I have “unlimited” (but metered) tokens at work. I was primarily a Claude (Opus and Fable) user until Astra came out.

Astra’s outputs are much more concise while being similarly accurate, they seem more information dense. It’s also extremely fast and doesn’t have to “go check instead of answering from memory” if the answer is already in context, or dig super deep into a project before answering.

It’s honestly refreshing to work with Astra after being basically burned out from reading Claude’s responses.

It’s not perfect. It’s just as “mid” for professional SWE work as Opus/Fable, regularly making incorrect assumptions/generalizations, requiring steering in large codebases, and being incapable of making reasonable long-term software design decisions on its own in complex projects.

Re:A new way to reflect on how you use Claude on Thursday July 09, 2026 @11:06AM (#48847166)
To be fair, the article doesn’t quite deliver on this promise. The examples are mostly focused on improving work-related workflows, so I guess that’s what they think “daily life” is.
I agree, but some (most?) software being written doesn’t require a deep understanding to verify because the domain is small enough or you’re not required to solve for all of its intricacies. E.g. prototypes, internal tools, low scale CRUD apps, personal projects, etc.

I believe this is where the huge divide in perceived AI productivity in SW comes from. It’s folks working on low-understanding-required domains talking to folks working on high-understanding-required domains.

Re:Don't trust large context windows on Sunday June 14, 2026 @03:45AM (#48525087)
I’ve had similar experiences with Fable. 70%+ context used out of 1M, still sharp and no memory issues.
By extension, do also believe this super intelligent human should have no human rights and be enslaved by Anthropic for profit?

Goddammit, you can tell this is AI slop from the first two sentences.
Re:Gas Town: From Clown Show to v1.0 on Tuesday April 14, 2026 @09:02PM (#47773423)
Agreed. I kinda concluded that the expected `doctor` usage is to have an agent run it for you and then they can try to figure it out when `doctor` can’t fix the issues.
Re:Gas Town: From Clown Show to v1.0 on Tuesday April 14, 2026 @08:56PM (#47773376)
I tried both Beads and Gas Town and had the same experience.

These fully vibe coded tools seem to have near zero QA. The fact that they ship with a `doctor` command that you regularly need to run (even if you didn’t change anything about your environment) tells you all you need to know.

> Because no chance in hell is China selling this thing

Didn’t they agree to sell it to Oracle back when Trump threatened to ban it?

Re:Meta rebuffs Google's virtual reality tie-up proposal on Friday March 01, 2024 @12:42PM (#39564362)
Meta has been known for years to only negotiate if you have competing offers. I guess being the only place with high TC hiring right now complicates things but this negotiation strategy is not new.

I suspect Apple Silicon is still in a league of its own and worth every penny compared to Windows laptops.
Re:Ask HN: Why am I suddenly unemployable? on Monday January 15, 2024 @03:35PM (#39005738)
Some quick feedback: It’s hard to parse your CV quickly because there are no actual job titles. I have to dig into the bullet points to get some idea of what your role was.
Re:Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions on Saturday January 13, 2024 @03:05PM (#38983987)
> Is a google employee in US somehow more competent than the one in India?

Yes. I can’t speak for Google employees but I’ve worked with Indian FTE teams at another big tech company. Indian FTEs are generally less competent than US FTEs at the same level. Upper management knows this and they don’t care because US employees are 3-4x more expensive, so they can hire 3 senior engineers in India for the cost of 1 in the US, which is still a good deal on a cost-per-output basis.

I think the reason for this competency discrepancy may be the huge incentive to move to the US because of pay. In other words, if Indian engineers were as good as their US counterparts, they would move to the US and make 3-4x as much, which leaves only those incapable or unwilling to move in the Indian market.

Flashy product announcements without an immediate release are part of the “big company game”. Usually they are just a mechanism to make leadership more confident about the product by showing them how excited external people are about it, creating hype, etc.
Nah, Microsoft employees being second class citizens compared to acquisitions is nothing new. e.g. compare Microsoft comp with LinkedIn/GitHub comp.

He plays the orchestra.
I made this comment when the submission title was “Tech salaries largely unchanged as skills shortages continue”. It seems like the title is more accurate now.

Re:FedNow Is Live on Thursday July 20, 2023 @07:53PM (#36808385)
This is not a consumer-facing, social payment platform (e.g. Venmo), it is another payment rail (e.g. ACH, wires).

Laypeople are not the target audience for this, payment rail users are (i.e. entities who regularly utilize ACH/wire transfers or build services on top of them).

Unless I spin up simple automation to deactivate your account every hour.

Surprised to see a non-acquired, non-Facebook app developed by Meta succeed
Re:DMT, Derealization, and Depersonalization on Friday June 30, 2023 @06:25PM (#36543323)
This is extremely similar to what happened to me. Antidepressants and CBT helped manage the anxiety and, 12 years later, I’m pretty much back to normal except for the ocasional manageable panic you describe and some baseline anxiety.
Out of scope for MVP. Move fast and break things.
Re:My total comp for creating GitHub Copilot on Tuesday June 20, 2023 @03:02PM (#36408885)
20K bonus and promo on top of existing TC and perf incentives is not bad at all.

Also, depending on their level, “creating GitHub Copilot” might actually be part of their baseline role expectations.

Can mods run a script to delete (or overwrite) all posts and comments in a subreddit? Maybe they should try that instead of just going private.
Re:Reddit Strike Has Started on Sunday June 11, 2023 @02:22PM (#36284109)
They can stop losing money by slashing their workforce and not working on features nobody wants (e.g. chat, an official mobile app, etc).

The core site functionality has not changed in over a decade, there’s no need to try to be Instagram.

I mean, it’s hard to believe Reddit is a company with 2000 employees. Have you looked at their app? It’s like somebody’s high school coding project.
The base Model Y is not even at a luxury price point after tax credits.

But yeah, Tesla’s interior build quality is not really comparable with other luxury cars.

Re:Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023 on Wednesday May 10, 2023 @02:52PM (#35891723)
Nah, Microsoft has been underpaying engineers in the US for almost a decade now. Their solution is just to replace one frustrated engineer leaving with three in India and that seems to be working great.

$74B is still quite high for the current market
