Vim opens really fast on my desktop. Small and powerful software still exists.
Re:Mastodon still can’t replace Twitter on Saturday September 03, 2022 @12:23AM (#32698698)
It's a total failure. John Mastodon, the CEO and founder of Mastodon, was just fired from the company after their stock prices hit an all time low.

That's not how it works. It's open source and can be forked and improved upon. It doesn't need millions of users to survive and be useful to a lot of us.

Re:New numbers on music consumption on Sunday July 17, 2022 @10:47AM (#32127271)
We're no longer only fed music by the top 40. That's not a bad thing. We're in a musical renaissance.
Depends on the user. Running Lightroom, Pixelmator and Excel are trivial to me because that's not my workflow.
This is the correct response to capitalism.

He's the man now, dog. But in heaven.
Re:The X.Org Server Is Abandonware? on Sunday October 25, 2020 @08:43AM (#24885882)
The last time I checked Wayland I still couldn't share only one monitor when I screen shared in Jitsi.

The CPU jumped to 100 when I recorded my desktop with OBS and had a terrible delay.

It's just not ready yet.

Re:Can't you just right click? on Wednesday August 19, 2020 @11:13PM (#24219498)
It's like sha256sum but cost $99 a year.
Re:Mastodon 3.2 on Monday August 03, 2020 @02:08AM (#24034653)
That audio player looks fantastic.
Re:Show HN: High performance X11 animated wallpapers on Monday August 03, 2020 @02:03AM (#24034635)
It's the same reason I change my icons and desktop theme. I'm gonna stare at this screen for 10+ hours a day, I want it to be beautiful.
Good news. There is no login. It's not tied to your Google account.
I stopped driving about 6 years ago. I live in a very walkable city and work from home so I sold my car. The few times I do drive it's now very overwhelming. I'm just glad to know it's not just me.
Re:Firefox Picture-in-Picture on Wednesday July 08, 2020 @02:38PM (#23772902)
It doesn't feel like bloat to me. It makes my experience better.
Maybe, just don't install it?

Re:Why did I wake up before my alarm clock went off? (2015) on Friday February 28, 2020 @04:34PM (#22446605)
I often wake up two to three minutes before the alarm. It happens often. I just think my internal clock is just getting in habit.
Re:System76 Launches Threadripper Workstations on Friday February 07, 2020 @08:28PM (#22273043)
They only works if you're building one. If you need to get an entire office setup with these it's actually worth paying to have them prebuilt. Especially if there is a decent support package.
The answer is yes. It sadly happens all the time. Death sentences should not be a thing.
Re:How to stay private when using Android on Wednesday January 01, 2020 @01:10PM (#21929441)
I use their free tier and it's relatively snappy. Plus you can get the actual ovpn files and avoid having any proprietary software on your machines.
Re:How to stay private when using Android on Wednesday January 01, 2020 @01:08PM (#21929428)
I've been doing this for about a year and half now. Not only does my phone's battery last longer without Play store but I'm missing very few features.
The red light doesn't seem to travel as far. It's less likely to wake your partner when you peek at your device in the middle of the night.
It's easy to forget that sometimes you don't really need to host things. I used to run a Next Cloud server for syncing my documents, contacts, and calendar with all my devices. I'd rarely use a device that was not mine to access those things. I've switched to Syncthing (https://syncthing.net/) and DecSync (https://github.com/39aldo39/DecSync) and that's replaced 95% of what Next Cloud did for me.

Your use case might differ from mine quite a bit, but for me it was the best way to go. No server to babysit and everything "Just Works™".

This is one of those things that I just thought was common knowledge. I forced my nieces and nephews to get familiar with the local bus routes before they we're old enough to drive. Having to plan a trip and look at a map do wonders.
Re:I Miss the Old Internet on Thursday October 31, 2019 @10:21AM (#21409087)
The internet is a better place when it's treated like a network of people instead of a network of Brands™.
Re:Why you should have a side project on Tuesday October 08, 2019 @09:20AM (#21191942)
I've never understood the grind culture. When I'm not at work there are a millions things I'd rather do than more work. I know some people who are always working. I can't. I need down time.
Re:Now Is the Perfect Time for an RSS Renaissance on Tuesday April 24, 2018 @10:02AM (#16912639)
I haven't had a laptop that doesn't support suspend and resume in years. It's worth looking at again in 2018. It's gotten a lot better.
> This was the year people started to connect the dots about how Spotify’s founder, Daniel Ek, made his initial fortune. At 23, he was the CEO of uTorrent, a pirate platform that became BitTorrent (arguably the largest rights-infringing platform in the world). He and their developers then used identical rights-infringing software in order to build his new golden goose: Spotify.

Holy hell that's a lot of bad history. Bittorrent existed far before uTorrent was a thing. What are the dots that people connected? A quick glance at his Wikipedia article?

Re:Ask HN: Bitcoin about to cross $10k. Still a skeptic? on Monday November 27, 2017 @12:22PM (#15789021)
That means you either don't know how bitcoin or a ponzi scheme work.
It's a good baseline. Almost any phone you pick up will do equivalent or better.
