Since the spelling reform of 1996 both are spelled Föhn
Re:Goodbye to Google Code Jam on Friday March 24, 2023 @11:34PM (#35299036)
GPT 4 gave me this answer:

In this variant of the Monty Hall problem, since all the doors are transparent, you can clearly see what is behind each door. This changes the nature of the problem entirely. The element of uncertainty, which is present in the original Monty Hall problem, is no longer a factor.

In this scenario, if you pick door No. 1 and see a car behind it, you should stick with your choice, as there is no advantage to switching. If you pick door No. 1 and see a goat behind it, you should switch to door No. 2, as you can clearly see the car behind it.

Since you can see what's behind the doors, the probability of winning the car is no longer based on conditional probability, and the original Monty Hall paradox does not apply. Instead, your decision is simply based on your observation of what's behind each door.

Curious that they translated it to German based on my phone settings for a product that only supports US banks? (I don’t mind that it is US banks, just… why did they pay a human to translate it?)
Re:Universal Paperclips on Saturday December 11, 2021 @07:28AM (#29520426)
The game has an end, and you can get there in a much more reasonable amount of time.

Seeing this made me donate a small sum to the Internet Archive, maybe you (dear reader) want to do it too? https://archive.org/donate/
Re:Simdjson – Parsing Gigabytes of JSON per Second on Thursday February 21, 2019 @12:09AM (#19214714)
Also noteworthy that on Intel at least, using AVX/AVX2 reduces the frequency of the CPU for a while. It can even go below base clock.
I've never quite understood the appeal of Dependency Injection. What's wrong with just using constructors?
Re:Non-uniform memory access meets the OOM killer on Saturday March 31, 2018 @07:15AM (#16722811)
Pardon my ignorance: How did Solaris solve this?
Re:File consistency (2015) on Friday March 30, 2018 @06:03AM (#16714937)
There is in fact a DPDK related project for NVMe storage: https://github.com/spdk/spdk

(I have not had reason to use it yet, unfortunately)

Re:The EU Is Keeping Poor Countries Poor on Sunday February 04, 2018 @07:28AM (#16302479)
The fact that it showed me a pop-up advert for an Ayn Rand book was also indicative.
Re:Finland to propose that EU abolish daylight savings time on Sunday January 28, 2018 @04:15PM (#16253553)
In 1517174122 daylight saving time is so obsolete...
A quick google says:

<<According to Title 3 of the US Code, the US President "shall earn" a salary of $400,000, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account, and $19,000 for entertainment.>>

Where can a mediocre software developer get $450K+?!

Re:Serious Intel CPU bugs (2016) on Wednesday January 03, 2018 @05:02AM (#16059784)
The article spends 4 paragraphs on them. Just one example:

Although AMD’s response in the forum was that these were isolated issues, phoronix was able to
reproduce crashes by running a stress test that consists of compiling a number of open source
programs. They report they were able to get 53 segfaults with one hour of attempted compilation.
In a five party system, it is quite common for voters to not feel too much allegiance to any party in particular.
Re:Serious Intel CPU bugs (2016) on Wednesday January 03, 2018 @04:50AM (#16059730)
The very article mentions at the bottom that AMD has its fair share of nasty bugs recently, too. If anything, I would expect AMD to spend even less effort on validation (because they are not flush with cash).
Re:A Tech-Driven Boom Is Coming; Please Be Patient on Thursday December 28, 2017 @06:04AM (#16021423)
Fun fact: Berkshire Hathaway (Buffett's company) now has a huge stake in Apple. So it's not really true anymore that he avoids IT.
Re:CMake Announcement from Boost Steering Committee on Friday July 28, 2017 @12:59PM (#14875697)
True, but Cmake has a lot of users already familiar with it and who have it pre-installed. So I applaud this change to use Cmake!
Re:What the brain's wiring looks like on Wednesday July 05, 2017 @10:08PM (#14707685)
The article indirectly says it's using special MRI machines with much better than millimeter resolution. So I think your first analogy is likely better than your second.
I for one find this GROẞARTIG. Maybe not using umlauts or writing nouns in lower case is more efficient, but sometimes it feels good to have something like this.
You could just make a new clean checkout in a different directory?
Re:GCC 7.1 Released on Tuesday May 02, 2017 @12:50PM (#14248060)
You can install a devtoolset[1] to get a newer GCC which keeps ABI compatibility. I'm using gcc 6.2.1 on CentOS 7 that way.

Try indenting your code section by 4 spaces. :)
"protocol buffers which have zero backwards compatibility"

Either I misunderstand you, or this is _remarkably_ wrong: Protocol buffers were designed to make it easy to define protocols which are both backward and forward compatible.

I see three main failed predictions:

  - 10 GHz
  - long pipelines, I think we're currently at around 14 stages, which is more than P6 but less than Netburst (Pentium 4)
  - EUV lithography is still not a thing at 10 nm
Die I miss any important failed predictions?
Re:Don’t Mess with The Google on Thursday November 17, 2016 @03:04AM (#12975388)
SMS is not very secure, there have been quite a few stories of people losing digital access due to an attacker just calling Verizon and taking over their phone account.
Type aliases have been useful in many languages for many reasons. I also don't understand why the author is so upset.
Re:Doing Business in Japan (2014) on Sunday November 06, 2016 @05:11PM (#12887377)
Why will it give you sleepless nights? Are you planning on moving to Japan and you're worried about that now?
Re:GPU Ray Tracing the Wrong Way on Sunday September 04, 2016 @12:38PM (#12425261)
It's still really cool just for the low-level hardcoreness!

Google actually quickly directs you to the needed information: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9171356/how-do-i-exit-fro... (first result for "quit git editor" for me)
Re:Microsoft reports $22.6B in Q4 revenue on Wednesday July 20, 2016 @05:48AM (#12127821)
Revenue and net income are standard, and (relatively) precise terms. Using "income" in place of revenue would only make it confusing to people who know the standard terms, while only marginally lessening the confusion of people who don't know them.
