You just explained what s wrong with unsubstantiated groupthink and bullying. I won't buy your book.

The connection between frustration and aggressiveness is largely false (1) , unless you can point to a reliable source. The nerds that I know are not at all as you describe, and I wonder why you choose such derisive words.

Re:Canonical will no longer fund Kubuntu on Tuesday February 07, 2012 @08:49AM (#3561715)
One thing about ubuntu (and the reason i prefer it) is that it works well with new hardware mostly out-of-the-box. If you use it on laptops that is a big plus. If you hate too much eyecandy, xubuntu is an obvious option.

But maybe i have overlooked other distributions that "just work" out of the box.

Re:Canonical will no longer fund Kubuntu on Tuesday February 07, 2012 @07:21AM (#3561461)
The reason i prefer xubuntu is the fact that Kubuntu is going the way of ubuntu by investing heavily on eyecandy, touch-like interfaces and excessive UI bloat. KDE seems to be the best overall platform for development, but the interface is trying too much to be everything. I think they should reconsider falling back to a simple clean default desktop, because they are doing a disservice to the developers of thousands of great KDE apps.
Re:Why French Parents Are Superior on Sunday February 05, 2012 @06:09AM (#3553824)
Ours must be the only generation ever willing to blame the previous one for just about everything. Also, by what measure is the world a worse place today?
Re:Why French Parents Are Superior on Saturday February 04, 2012 @06:03PM (#3552522)
Well, go to Eurodisney and compare kids that speak different languages. French kids are generally well behaved, with other southerneuropeans being the noisiest.
Re:Why French Parents Are Superior on Saturday February 04, 2012 @06:01PM (#3552510)
A previous article about how chinese mothers are better created quite a stir. Is there some sort of parenting crisis in the US that leads to this kind of soul-searching? (I m not in the US, so i'm curious to know)
Re:Show HN: I just launched a new blogging platform on Saturday February 04, 2012 @05:38PM (#3552440)
On topic: this will probably not roll as-is. How about a $1/month fee (or even $1/year would be enough i think)? How about pay-to-read posts?

Off topic, since a blog is the "hello world" of web development for quite a few years now: how many of you have created blogging-related web apps? I 'll start with http://instablogg.com

That definition doesnt make sense. Guerilla warfare by definition attacks an army. Terrorism has to do with fear and coercion. Plus i don't think terrorists make any distinction in their targets.
Re:Hackful - A Hacker News for Europe on Friday February 03, 2012 @10:17AM (#3547366)
Indeed, it solves the wrong problem. We are not lacking in tech news access over here, we are lacking in knowing who is around, what is around, who is hiring, who is firing, who funds, who succeeds, who fails, who is searching for cofounders etc.
Re:UK chemist on Elsevier's ban on textmining on Thursday February 02, 2012 @03:44PM (#3544371)
Just throwing it into the mix, what would it take to convince Google to stop indexing the content of journal articles from closed-access journals? Surely without search, the articles are siloed; both journals and authors get a taste of the importance of opening access.

Until the academia realizes that computers can read too, it's important for companies that DO have access to these papers (like google scholar[1]) to create 3rd party APIs so that we can at least have better search tools.

So the consensus is still that this is all cool because there are no IP violations? Because i think there is, with this being a public company and all. I would like one of their investors to come forward and at least say something for once.
Re:The Power of Introverts: A Manifesto for Quiet Brilliance on Monday January 30, 2012 @10:30AM (#3529117)
It's always interesting to see how others experience their introversion, not least because by definition introverts do not exchange much. For me it's not about "time to recharge", i tend to think like an introvert even when being the center of attention and don't feel shy about it. As a geek, i need rules and regularities, so i 've ended up with a law that there has to be a fundamental balance between "time spent" (because time is the ultimate limited resource) vs "reward". Usually, time spent with "things" is more rewarding than time spent with people, except when the person is truly exceptional but those moments are rare. And it all depends on the definition of "reward".

The ability to function well socially is something introverts don't work on, but they should, not in order to become extroverts but because most (of those i know) are quite more interesting to talk to than the average Joe.

Re:The Power of Introverts: A Manifesto for Quiet Brilliance on Monday January 30, 2012 @10:15AM (#3529065)
That's what i wish to know, is he faking extroversion or not.
Re:The Power of Introverts: A Manifesto for Quiet Brilliance on Monday January 30, 2012 @09:20AM (#3528869)
Interesting that you consciously chose to be more "outgoing". I believe that (ex-)introverts still have less need for others. Do you believe that your needs have changed too, e.g would you be OK if you went back to living like an introvert tomorrow as you did in the past or would you be overly depressed about it?
Re:The Power of Introverts: A Manifesto for Quiet Brilliance on Monday January 30, 2012 @09:14AM (#3528842)
Some people often feel that the drawbacks of social interaction outweigh the benefits. Some other people feel the opposite. At one point both choose to believe that social interactions are or are not of high value, and through daily social friction it soon becomes a permanent pattern of behaviour in their lives. Usually all this happens unconsciously in early life, but as time goes on it becomes conscious why they choose this or that. So i believe in most cases it's a voluntarily accepted pattern, and it has binary qualities.

By the way, introverted people should not be stereotyped as living with their mothers, they are successful enough not to and, indeed most of them value their independence above all.

Re:The Power of Introverts: A Manifesto for Quiet Brilliance on Monday January 30, 2012 @09:07AM (#3528807)
I wonder why people find this surprising. Groupthink involves substantial compromises so you end up with least-common-denominator solutions. Epics throughout history often talk about the accomplishments of Great (Wo)Men, but not of Great Groups. The idea that groupthink is more valuable is just a hypothesis.

The Nytimes had a similar story recently: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/15/opinion/sunday/the-rise-of...

Re:How going to the gym makes you stronger on Monday January 30, 2012 @08:00AM (#3528564)
You can do it at home. For me and other hardgainers it's actually recommended that you do short, intense workouts, where you can scream and gasp without worrying that you are being ridiculous. It takes up very little time and the feeling is incredible. If you need to lose weight, i would recommend biking.

Think about it as a way to improve blood circulation to your most valuable organ: your brain.

Why do you need a whole iphone for that? You can hack up something like this with an arduino and motion sensors for ~$30

Please don't build a self-building satellite! The thing will expand until it hides the sun from us!

There are already plenty of biology databases, it's just that people don't know yet what to make out of that data.

Build an Etsy for Intellectual property

They stole my idea! I think it's good time to build that

Playing the devil's advocate one may say:

- Both cases involve IP and money. The immoral of the story is that in piracy the copyright holder loses money from the theft. In code theft, the immoral of the story is not that the holder loses money, but that the thief makes some illegitimaly. Both should probably be considered equally wrong

- The page was "stolen and branded as their own", but

a) only a tiny non-critical page of the product was copied, and

b)There was no way to pay the original creator for the reuse.

I too found the backlash disturbingly intense, given the previous relaxed laisez-faire attitude towards other people's IP in this forum. But otherwise, it's not an issue out of which someone might make useful conclusions regarding intellectual property policies.
