News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I know this is absolutely not the point, but I wanted to touch on the "hunting = bad for nature" idea.

All animals die, and dying from a clean rifle shot is preferable to 99.9% of the ways animals will die in the wild.

Regulations like bag limits and license lotteries prevent over-hunting, and in many situations (like the wild boars in Italy) hunting is an ecologically positive activity, as it reduces populations that would otherwise explode and destroy its own ecosystem.

I'm not sure if it's directly related to density, see Japan as a counter example.

I was a young sysadmin, so I did not have the insight that I would now on actual system efficacy.

From a systems standpoint, it worked very well. High uptime and really nice thermals.

God I hope so. Some of my fondest professional memories were my early Navy days, hacking together PS3's into a big ol cluster

Edit: Reading through the exploit, looks like linux compatability for older (non 13.6) is possible. 13.6 needs a new hypervisor exploit.

Re:GPT-6 Astra on Friday September 04, 2026 @08:26AM (#49563614)
Humans do that by inventing algorithms like AlphaGo :)

In a more serious note, I think the person you are responding to meant "new" more in line with "novel".

Take a microfluidic chip, for example. Current AI systems can create new flow cell geometry, but cannot come up with the idea for a microfluidic flow cell itself.

Re:Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with? on Friday August 14, 2026 @03:57PM (#49303836)
Last model from Anthropic that I can use as a security researcher. 4.8+ won't even look at my git repos

Granted they contain robot dog malware, but still.

Whats your setup? I have a single 3090 and am struggling to get it purring
Re:Databricks drove down AI coding spend 70% on Friday August 07, 2026 @04:21PM (#49215745)
I needed to thoroughly test rerankers on my companies rather unique corpus.

Opus and I wrote a parallelized test harness and labeled groundtruth in around 2 hours.

In 2022 that would've likely been all I did for a couple sprints

The CVE process itself is broken. HackerOne and company VDPs are inundated with new reports of varying quality thanks to the advancements (I think) in agentic AI. It's allowed for both an increase in trash-tier low quality AND legitimately high quality reports. Since the same AI's are writing both, its almost impossible to distinguish between the two at a surface level.

In response, companies just aren't responding like they used to. I spoke at a cybersecurity conference In June and the overwhelming "vibe" on the floor and in the talks was that responsible disclosure was dead or dying, and public disclosure is the way forward. The Microsoft and Nightmare Eclipse situation was oft cited.

I will be totally honest, it is hard for me to want to engage with content that is clearly written by AI.
Re:What Do We Know About the Microplastics Inside Us? on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @03:20PM (#48836260)
I participated in research from 2017-2022 that found similar results regarding bio-interactions, generally.

Learned a lot about making microfludic flow cells at least

Re:Enough with the AI FOMO, go slow-mo, says Domo CDO on Monday May 18, 2026 @09:24AM (#48179522)
Bravo to the Domo CDO, who's fomo won't stop slo-mo no-mo'

Routing in agent pipelines is another use. "Does user prompt A make sense with document type A?" If yes, continue, if no, escalate. That sort of thing

$25-35/hr for the evening shift it seems. Not starvation wages by any means, but certainly not great (or even good) pay for that area.
Re:Figure 03, our 3rd generation humanoid robot on Thursday October 09, 2025 @04:15PM (#45532530)
Most companies are using world model simulations for training nowadays, like Issac Gym or Mujoco, not just video data.
2 million hardware devices sold is not nothing, that is a pretty significant amount of hardware to ship.
Re:Anime fans stumbled upon a mathematical proof on Friday March 07, 2025 @09:21AM (#43290381)
Fear not, there is a handy proof we can use here...
They're right. Toward the EOL the PS3 had a big resurgence as THE console of South America and Southeast Asia due to highly available used games, console jailbreaks etc. and of course FIFA.

If their Go2 video is anything to go by, you should take this video with a grain of salt and expect about 50% of the demos to actually work

Omniverse is a simulation platform specifically designed to do things like train/test robotics. It's not a creative engine like UE or Unity.

Significantly higher reach. I use steam every day and didn't know its used for video distribution.

>It would be much better if humanity's population were limited.

It's a shame your argument devolved into eugenics so quickly.

There's a 99% chance this was me!

Mom and pop shop grocery store near me had one new in box in the back of the store and I nabbed it because my wife and I love the Wii U
