Re:Dbt to acquire Transform to build out its semantic layer on Thursday February 09, 2023 @03:17PM (#34730731)
Minerva actually had really poor tableau support as of a year ago, that is something Transform improved on. Most of Minerva consumption was done via Superset, GoogleSheets, and email
This is not new or secret.

Re:How Airbnb Built “Wall” to prevent data bugs on Friday May 20, 2022 @09:11PM (#31454380)
the logic in Wall isn't defined in YAML, the logic is defined as SQL or code and then configured via YAML.
This post and the comments are really subpar for HN.

1. Local storage is not going away. Local playback via SD card is still fully supported. Only the event clips which are stored in the cloud are "going away".

2. You can sign up for Cam Lite for free and end up with MORE functionality than before (person detection, longer clips, etc). You don't even need to provide a payment method, you just have to get past their pop-up guilting you into paying to cover the storage costs.

3. You can't find the playback option for viewing from your SD card? It's the giant colorful button on your app that says "view playback" when watching your live stream... how can you miss it?

I am not affiliated with Wyze in any way but I do own about a dozen of their cams (v1, v2 pan, and v3). They are fantastic for the price and have been more reliable than other more expensive ones I'm bought. They are also one of the few that provide an SD card slot. Their software is regularly updated and the app is solid. They don't use hostile user flows that push you to pay for their cloud services aside from the events being stored in the cloud.

You can also find OSS firmware that you can easy flash onto them that removes all the cloud features and keeps everything local.

Re:Data Fabric vs. Data Mesh: What's the Difference? on Thursday November 18, 2021 @11:34PM (#29273877)
it isn't either-or. it is both.

if you view the data pipeline, you start with Data Mesh and individual teams create datasets that maintain the data for their team's domain. following that, you then get the data fabric which blends those domain specific datasets together automatically based off of the combination of a defined data model and the declared needs of consumers. a centralized team then owns those tables but not the business logic.

an example of this is Airbnb's data stack. You can read about it here: https://link.medium.com/qzqciW7Milb

Re:For Uber and Lyft, the Rideshare Bubble Bursts on Sunday October 17, 2021 @04:21PM (#28899449)
they don't need to justify there existence, they need to justify their market cap. they attained that market cap via the dreams outlined in your article quote - it is reasonable to then question the value of the stock.

all companies have to justify their value - some have less clear justifications and that means more discussion. this isn't the conspiracy you make it out to be.

Re:What the Heck is a Data Mesh? on Friday July 30, 2021 @12:15AM (#28004367)
a bit self serving but I would recommend reading about Airbnb's Minerva (which I created). we leverage this data mesh concept to allow teams to define data independently and then Minerva handles blending the data from different teams together with guaranteed consistency.

Re:Airbnb’s Server-Driven UI System on Sunday July 04, 2021 @01:04PM (#27731072)
that wasn't satire, it was just an ignorant criticism along the same lines as "it's a crud app, there is no complexity"
why do you prefer 1080?

Re:Why Working from Home Will Stick [pdf] on Sunday January 24, 2021 @03:23AM (#25890349)
this is spoken like it is true for everyone, which is not accurate. I would have loved to be fully remote in my early 20s, free to travel and not focus purely on work. sure it was great for my career, but work isn't living.

sure, a ton of people hate working from home. some personalities and roles require in-person interaction. most people never considered wfh when choosing their apartment or house and don't have good setups. meanwhile, there are also a ton of people, like me, who have always _hated_ going into the office. being constantly distracted by coworkers, dealing with long commutes, and putting up with uncomfortable and loud offices.

yes, people need social interaction, but that doesn't have to come from coworkers. it is a very SF mindset to build your entire life around your work.. being in the office all day and most of your "friends" are coworkers.

this comment acts like there is some person on Google's side manually curating the search results. why is it Google's fault that your competitors have better SEO teams?
Re:YouTube launches TikTok competitor, Shorts on Wednesday September 16, 2020 @02:01AM (#24489976)
I think I'm missing something. why was it novel to use an algo to surface content 5 years ago? Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc have both been doing that for a very long time

is there something unique about how tiktok is doing it?

I completely disagree, the quality of products on Amazon has gone downhill over the past 5 years. You may attribute this to influx of bad merchants but it really comes down to Amazon not having the same incentives to properly rank items and remove bad actors. Instead it created Amazon Basics brand and steers users towards it. The influx of misc brand names and items that look exactly like each other just helps confuse consumers and make them lean towards Amazon Basics.
Re:Ask HN: Best ways to retain qualified employees? on Monday July 06, 2020 @06:01AM (#23746241)
there are diminishing returns on salary increases. you should aim to be competitive but if you raise it too high then people will stay just for the salary. their motivation changes and they can feel trapped or just start coasting.

if someone comes to you with a competing offer, you should be open to negotiation (provided they have done well in their recent perf reviews)

You say this like people won't get paychecks from many different companies and that checks will be extremely difficult to get.

This whole thing is essentially credit card points. These credit card companies pay you for the purchase data in the form on points. And the detail from those purchases is nothing compared to what FB and others would have.

they have a flourishing advertising business and have extremely valuable and actionable data on all of their users.

why not use Superset?
Re:New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub on Tuesday October 09, 2018 @03:29PM (#18179080)
maybe you don't want those features but a lot of us do. cloud storage of photos has been great and I'd love to stop paying for the additional storage space. yes, Google may benefit from it also but that is why it is free...
Re:New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub on Tuesday October 09, 2018 @03:19PM (#18179009)
empty box sounds pretty suspicious. weight sensors should catch that. you should record video of any other box opening you do.

Re:Google AMP – A 70% drop in our conversion rate on Thursday August 09, 2018 @04:27AM (#17722493)
what about amp pages not displaying a link to get to the actual source site? almost every time I open a link from my Google home feed it fails to display that header with the source URL link. I then have to manually force it to chrome and modify the URL

I can't tell if you are trolling or not.
Re:React Native at Airbnb on Wednesday June 20, 2018 @01:38AM (#17352859)
"For reference, we have about 10x the amount of code and 4x the number of screens on each native platform". So the amount of code and the complexity is substantially more difficult than you describe. You probably also don't have as rigorous AB testing, logging, internationalization, contributions to open source, etc.
it's a land grab, doesn't matter if people actually bought them, it only matters how many of them are out there. one you have one you are more likely to buy for Google stuff. for example, the Chromecast works well with Google home but doesn't with Alexa.
