Windows 10 has the Linux subsystem feature now. You can have a Linux CLI without a VM :)

There have been similar findings presented in other research shared on HN in the last year. For anyone interested in the topic, you might find more on the subject under the terms microRNA and epigenetics.

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2015) on Tuesday February 03, 2015 @03:12AM (#8989358)
Job poster here. I definitely do try to let the candidates know of the outcome once they make it past the coding interview phase. throwawaybcporn completed his interview fairly recently and a decision on that round of interviews had not been made yet. The candidates will hear back this week.

As with any startup, we are a small team doing a million things, and sometimes things (such as interview rounds) may take longer than they should because a critical need for the business was prioritized.

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2015) on Tuesday February 03, 2015 @03:03AM (#8989341)
Thanks for the interview. Since I only interviewed very few people from my post last month, I have a good idea of who you are.

The reason you haven't heard back yet is because the most recent interview round is still on-going and a decision has not been reached yet. You should expect to hear back this week.

Re:How we made editing Wikipedia twice as fast on Tuesday December 30, 2014 @03:50PM (#8816670)
I've run into a similar case. In my case using ESI defeated the whole purpose of the Varnish implementation because the dynamically generated portion of the page had to rebuild the user session and bootstrap the framework, which, while faster than doing it for the entire page, was still not as fast as I would have liked to deliver the content to the browser.

In the end I ended up placing special HTML tags where the ESI tags would have been placed, and then making AJAX calls (on dom ready) to swap out the static content with the dynamic user-specific content.

It worked well for our needs.

Re:Varnish 4.0.2 released on Thursday October 09, 2014 @10:05AM (#8432406)
This is false. I have personally configured Varnish to power blogs, marketplace websites, and a Magento powered E-commerce store.

If you've worked with Magento then you know it relies heavily on cookies and sessions. Even with all difficulties of modifying Magento I was able configure Magento and Varnish to work together perfectly within a week.

I can point you to the Magento site running with Varnish if you send me an email.

SSH tunnels for the data center. Remote Desktop or TeamViewer for office access.
Re:Ask HN: how do I get myself ready for the job market again? on Tuesday December 17, 2013 @07:25AM (#6920713)
Send me an email (in profile) I would be happy to give you a phone interview, that would be a good start. Maybe even some tips for your resume or cover letter.
What service do you use? Does it also have an API?
Re:Plot thickens in Airbnb vacation rental horror story on Saturday July 30, 2011 @08:41PM (#2827225)
Her blog post here http://ejroundtheworld.blogspot.com/2011/01/new-year-new-hom... mentions that its a rented apartment.

I quickly rented a place of my own and began to settle in – unpacking dusty boxes, unloading suitcases and scouring the internet for furniture. Something along the lines of a home began to take shape, and with it came that invaluable feeling of being at peace.

Are you talking about ThemeForest, or is there another one like it with great themes?
Re:Ask HN: What are the current best options for faxing? on Friday July 15, 2011 @04:15PM (#2768900)

Re:GfxCardStatus - Utility for unibody Macbook Pro on Wednesday July 13, 2011 @12:49PM (#2759581)
I've been using this utility for a while, no external displays will work under integrated mode. This has caused some confusion for me in the past when I was trying to connect to a projector in a meeting and realized later why the external display was not being picked up.
Re:Erlang code worth reading on Tuesday July 12, 2011 @12:31PM (#2755357)
I've been checking out Chicago Boss to get involved with Erlang on the web front.

Chicago Boss is an open-source web framework inspired by Rails and written in Erlang. http://chicagoboss.org/projects/chicagoboss/wiki

Looks like a nicely coded and laid out project.

Tell us about your crawler :)
Re:FuzzyWuzzy: Fuzzy String Matching in Python on Friday July 08, 2011 @06:31PM (#2744352)
I did something similar for product matching across a Yahoo! store with products in a Amazon merchant account.

I had a set of products from Yahoo! that needed their equivalent product in a set of products from Amazon. I indexed all the Amazon products into Xapian and let the search functionality do its magic by using the Yahoo product title as the search keyword. It also had a scoring mechanism and worked flawlessly for my needs.

Re:Ask HN: I need a chat feature in my legacy webapp on Thursday July 07, 2011 @06:40PM (#2740578)
How about this? http://ajaxim.com/

Or if you want to experiment, seems most async frameworks have some kind of chat demo that you could potentially modify and expand for your use

Re:Poll: What database does your company use? on Wednesday June 22, 2011 @05:31PM (#2685395)
What kind of data are you storing in Riak? And is it write or read heavy usage?
I think the number of connections is more than enough, keep in mind that its concurrent connections. If you're using so many connections where their price seems like a sticking point you should probably roll your own.

Check out http://socket.io for the front-end libraries

It's not too hard to roll your own, I wrote my own over the course of a week in 2007 using Flash XMLSockets and Twisted Python as the backend, check here on hints if you need ideas on implementing your own: http://code.google.com/p/aonic/wiki/Examples

Re:Ask HN: Should I join my friends business? on Wednesday June 08, 2011 @02:11PM (#2634287)
What have you got to lose by taking on the role? List out the pros and cons for yourself to help.

30% is very good for a business that has been running for 4 years with existing customers.

Thanks! More interested in the scraper.. is it open-source? If yes, where can we download it? If not, can you write about your experience in building it?
What do you guys use for your reverse proxying? Custom software with very good on-the-fly HTML processing?
