You must be miserable in your job. All the good engineers I know would gladly take some pay cut to be able to do projects like this.
Re:Mozilla Introduces Firefox Enterprise on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @06:34PM (#50079882)
That's the point, you'd think any browsers should be fine? But only Firefox was approved after OpSec department did their research. There were definitely something that made them very unhappy about Chromium to ban it wholesale.
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:47PM (#50078498)
Because that would require a lot of RAM for the multi-user switch to work flawlessly. They cheap out and force the processing onto your iPhone. It's a glory square CarPlay screen ..
One would've thought that the display data bus would be encrypted/scrambled in such a device, or at least packaged in a way that makes this kind of attack destructive to the circuit board (chip-on-glass).

Amateur hour all around.

Re:Mozilla Introduces Firefox Enterprise on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:11PM (#50076076)
That's weird. I used to work in a very secure facility (think actual air-gapped supercomputers where network access is building-LAN only) and Firefox was the only approved browser.
Re:Deno Is Joining Cloudflare on Friday October 09, 2026 @04:41PM (#50026319)
It's one of those things that the technical aspect is simple but the paperwork dehumanizes me. Just a couple more bullshit engineering design documents to generate
I just un-retire my pair of 1080Ti for some small models development because the current GPU prices literally make me sad.
Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @02:45PM (#50010178)
> Bring smarter, qualified people to the US. If not, they’ll find a way somewhere else

More than 70% of H1B in tech is from a single country, where cheating is considered a normal aspect of life. I'm sure most people here have at least once encountered this cultural difference in their day to day work.

While I still think H1B program is needed, it has to be revamped, putting cap per country is the most obvious first step.

Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @02:25PM (#50009856)
This is a very well known tactic in H1B factory like Tata and Cognizant, people has been complaining about this for years. Not sure about Microsoft though.
Re:Integer multiplication below n log n on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @01:00AM (#49988425)
It shows that nlogn is not the limit, how much better we can go? Not sure, probably not much, but breaking the barrier is important. Like in marathon for years nobody thought human could break the 2 hour barrier, then someone did and now it's become normal occurrences.

Multiplication can be done by FFT, which is an exceptionally efficient algorithm that has nlogn complexity, you'd be called crazy if you claim you have something more efficient than FFT.

Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @02:03PM (#49981932)
Both, especially for training. Astra and Fable were presumably trained on cluster of 100,000k GPUs, or at least a couple of 10Ks.

3,800 GPUs is nothing in the frontier side.

ASCII was amazingly efficient for conveying English text. Then we needed to encode multi languages and emojis, the resulting Unicode is just a mess.
We are snowballing to Minority Report ...
Why are you surprised? Since when does China care about privacy?
Re:ArXiv's Updated Rate Limit Policy on Thursday October 01, 2026 @06:02PM (#49927588)
Any example of high SNR authors who consistently putting more than 2 papers months after months after months for this to be a problem?
> Classifiers (instead of LLMs) return results with confidence scores.

This is also bogus unless you are talking about Bayesian inference. No classifier can output CI for a single point estimate. In every ML theory textbooks worth their $, it's always stressed not to treat these sigmoid'ed or softmax'ed numbers as probabilities or confidence scores, there is no such thing as CI for point estimate.

Is it though? I got sub 10ms for 200M params vision model way back in 2020 with TensorRT optimization running on RTX 2080Ti. 30ms for 0.8B classifier model doesn't sound special to me.
Re:Sonnet 5.5 on Monday September 28, 2026 @09:40PM (#49886997)
Which provider are you using Mimo from? The official Xiaomi one seems to be very slow/buggy for me in the last few days.
Re:Sonnet 5.5 on Monday September 28, 2026 @05:12PM (#49884433)
Does AI-style writing start bleeding into the comments, or is HN now also full of bots like reddit?
Re:An agent used DNS to reach an external chatbot on Sunday September 27, 2026 @01:56AM (#49863741)
My guess is they do, it just did not function probably. These frontier models are trained on massive datacenters with hundred of thousands of GPUs. There must be many safeguards before a run can be automatically stopped.
Re:DeepSeek Elastic Compute (DSec) on Saturday September 26, 2026 @08:48PM (#49862144)
Lmao with the conspiracy. Large scale experimental research is always like this, many papers in experimental physics have pages of authors.

no idea why I laughed so hard at this, feel so familiar

Re:iPhone Duo on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @05:24PM (#49634583)
Not sure how Celsius is worse? Its unit is the same of Kelvin, just shifted by 273. 0C is freezing, 100C is boiling. Some people say Fahrenheit is more representative of how people feel, but that is very subjective and biased towards the West and Northern hemisphere.
Re:LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @04:40PM (#49616703)
How is projector superior? More often than not, with the same amount of money spent, projector produces worse image quality, consumes more power, and don't last as long.
Re:Shutting down our public encrypted DNS on Friday September 04, 2026 @06:24PM (#49570943)
What is intrinsic difficulty? A product at scale has many intrinsic dimensions, not just technical. Saying scaling is not an intrinsic difficulty is pretty weird given a highly scalable product usually looks nothing like their 1-user counterpart even when they have the same functionality.
Re:OpenAI begins rolling out GPT-6 Astra on Thursday September 03, 2026 @04:54PM (#49556818)
Saying "proving 1+1=2" is pretty misleading though. The book deals with all the foundational things needed to set up a mathematical universe where 1+1=2 actually has meaning and is consistent. That setup took 400 pages.
Re:GPT-6 Astra on Thursday September 03, 2026 @04:47PM (#49556715)
It's like my RPG character putting every points to one single trait. I'll one shot everything alive but will instantly die if accidentally drink water with 6.9 pH.
Re:GPT-6 Astra on Thursday September 03, 2026 @04:44PM (#49556662)
You'll also need to compare the amount of compute used now and then, which seems exponential to me.
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @09:17PM (#49458206)
That only means you won't be denied if you express immigration intent during interview. Besides that it's nothing special. There is no special path to GC/naturalization for H1Bs.
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @09:12PM (#49458159)
The only way this makes sense is he entered the country without inspection or something is very very wrong with his backgrounds. I personally know many people who overstayed their B1/F1 visas and then do AOS to green card via marriage, none was required to go back to their home countries.

OP either intentionally left out some crucial details or their friend lied.
