I grew up in a town with strict limits on commerce. No billboards, no sidewalk sandwich boards, business were required to offset from the road, plant shrubs / trees to reduce the view, both the building and road signs were required to be made of ‘natural’ materials and colors like wood and stucco with minimal branding color ‘pop.’

This was one of the most visually stunning and peaceful places I have ever seen in the world let alone these United States - and there is not a a single reason we can’t all enact that law at a national level. We just don’t.

Of course this doesn’t begin to touch on the stalking they companies get away with on the internet.

Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:35AM (#50287399)
Your experience matches most closely to mine. I started on SO early in their existence and got plenty of points answering easy PHP and jQuery type questions.

As my career progressed I took on deep problems with complex issues and complex answers. Not much sense in asking as no one ever managed to help me with them. I’d just end up answering my own question a week or a month later perhaps.

And of course the moderation and karma farming - I oh so ‘fondly’ remember the one user that would take your question and run some auto-formatter on it so that it would fit his personal style guide and then get a percentage of the points as your now “co-author.” What fun!

I believe the GP is referring to the LLM firms that have hoovered up all works they can find, legally or not.

Of course stepping past the licensing question - I would have never contributed to SO as I did had I known what was to come.

With SO itself I could at least see the value in having a central store of knowledge for these topics and so, hey, I don’t mind that they got to be the ones to make it happen and profit.

(Some) Kids always had fake IDs, cigarettes, and booze growing up.

How are the verifications handled such that this is “I have my older cousin’s ID” and not “AI generated a selfie?”

Re:How I got over 300 Tor exit nodes removed on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:28PM (#50172936)
I once worked at a very pro-hacker firm (USA) - our CTO, good as he was, once tried to migrate our Ubuntu based servers to BSD, this being a very high tier performance oriented HFT firm, purely on his love of the distro.

A good dozen engineers in a team of 50 ran relays, one bold fool ran an exit node and was falsely fingered for CSAM type crimes during my tenure. The net effect was no one ran relays anymore. The poor exit operator remains an Irish to this day because he has dozens of headlines about his arrest and none about the dropped charges.

I hate to be “that guy” - but I truly believe there is a degree of so-called privilege in that perspective.

Not that I don’t value or agree with it, those soft skills are incredibly important, but one can I hope have both the soft and the hard skills.

Family and romance have evolved quite a bit in recent years - but all things equal are you wanting to marry into a family with productive skills, assets, etc? Would you pick true love with the peasant girl or marry to strengthen the alliance with Normandy? Would your answre to the latter change if you were the pauper?

I haven’t bought a UV-5R since 2024. That one is as unlockable with a trivial sequence of inputs.

Are modern varieties truly locked or just “locked ;)” ?

During COVID times I witnessed the most absurd pissing match - our CTO (and founder) was taking calls from his boat at anchor (camera on, palm trees in the back drop) while was working from a coffee shop(!)

The CEO tried publicly dressing down the CTO on a large call because his workspace must be “too distracting to work from.”

Ok but is this good for Bitcoin?

I’ve seen this in a conspiratorial sort of light sk forgive me - but is there any relation between Perlman’s look and Neabdethalism?
Re:A Map of Every Lighthouse on the Planet on Sunday October 04, 2026 @05:20PM (#49958008)
I checked my hometown “lighthouses” which technically exists and technically has a light but only exists as a tourist trap monument built in the 1980s. Well, it’s on there.
Re:SAML: A Fractal of Bad Design on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @01:03PM (#49819166)
The total cost to employee a Senior Software Engineer, and I mean a real one, not some kid with three years experience, including benefits, taxes, etc. easily gets up to 200K in a normal city at a non-FAANG job.

Im sorry if your UK salaries are much smaller, but I’m not P Diddy taking anyone’s piss out here m8!

Re:SAML: A Fractal of Bad Design on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:30PM (#49808405)
You do know that the “Total Cost of Ownership” is non-zero?
Re:SAML: A Fractal of Bad Design on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @04:21PM (#49807525)
> 1. Finding out a company wants several grand to flip the "allow SAML" switch on the tenant config, and a few thousand a year in additional licensing to leave it on. (I had a vendor both tell me it "takes five minutes" to get it set up, and then quote me $4,800 to "implement" it.)

If I’m paying for at least one Senior to build and support this awful enterprise authentication pattern, I’m looking at around 200k per year in total cost - you damn well bet I’m billing you for it!

Re:Why is Google still serving dodgy ads? on Sunday September 13, 2026 @05:08PM (#49688709)
Liability is kind of wild and the fact that “the internet” washes it all away is wilder still.

In my state, which perhaps takes liability too far in the other direction, if I serve sober you a single beer, you proceed to visit a second bar, have ten shots of tequila in an hour, and kill a man driving home - I share equal liability as the tequila bar.

Perhaps there is a middle ground in this world where a firm that makes billions has to have some basic “Know Your Customer” systems to prevent abuse?

Re:Silicon Valley Is Transforming the Military-Industrial Complex on Thursday September 10, 2026 @06:36PM (#49651071)
Both Bush and Obama used the Department of “Defense” to launch regime change “operations” across the MENA. If anything, Trump is guilty of saying the quiet part out loud, AKA “Truth in Advertising.” If anything, he got this one right. We’re a militant state.
I would assume WWII and the Cold War?
I’ve had quite a few issues with Firefox crashing or otherwise behaving poorly in recent years.

Switched over to Brave and have had perhaps a day or two of failed ad blocking on YT. Otherwise it’s been a rock solid experience and the built in Tor is nice when I need to quickly test geo rules.

Re:Kids These Days on Monday August 31, 2026 @06:25PM (#49515605)
I once heard a lecture from an attorney, one of his tenets was as to completely avoid topics you don’t want opposing council to clue in on and attack. Don’t they to preempt it, just ignore it entirely unless you’re forced to confront it.

The analogy was “don’t tell your kid not to stick crayons in their nose” - otherwise, well, they most certainly will latch on to the topic and do so.

I’ve purchased entire packs of “boneless skinless thigh” from Tyson which after opening had all the bones and all the skin. I cannot for a minute understand how that passed inspection.

In any case organics seem to be both less brined (aka not paying for salt water) and well prepared, everytime.

It will take decades to undo the damage - the blame is most certainly diffuse here.
Re:Dolly Parton has died on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @07:45PM (#49442277)
I’m no artist so I’m left to ask - how exactly is that metric determined?
Of course this is due to HIPPA - no such law exists to nuke bad cops from orbit for similar misuse.
Have any of yall given up on “nice tires” due to constant nail / screw punctures and subsequent loss within a very low mileage count?

I believe I spent $1200 on my last set only to lose two of them in the first six months due to road debris. Perhaps this is down stream of living in a boom state with constant construction but I’m nearly replacing cracked windshields and at least partial tires annually as of late.

Re:One Oakland police officer made $490k in overtime on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @07:35PM (#49354450)
Unless you’ve worked in government, honestly, just stop.

I spent years in a metro water system and this class of corruption is rampant. You get 90k maximum salary, but your last 5 years dictate your retirement… so guess what you find yourself with maximum overtime.

We tried to fire an employee for cause… who hired counsel, so we caved immediately because of optics. So we gave them a do nothing barely-show-up job for the last 7 years.

I personally went on a death march for 12+ hour days for 6 months, 7 days a week, off the clock and without compensation, only to be screwed out of my “accrued” PTO. The VP, two years from retirement, suffered not a bit of repercussion for this violation.

The public sector is rife with corruption, no question, but if you worship it as your God, you’ll have to look past this sacrilege to find the truth.

Never thought I’d see Mountain Rest / Walhalla on Hacker News!

While the rest of the tunnels aren’t quite as interesting or accessible, Stumphouse is part of a series of tunnels, some collapsed, some underwater, and one caged off for a bat colony susceptible to “White Nose Disease.” One can hike the Blue Ridge Mountain Railroad trail in Stumphouse park to see the remnants.

Have we? Most all of South Carolina is in a drought. We experienced an exceptionally dry Spring and have had good but not sufficient rains all summer.
I feel like the prevailing story you would hear “back in the day” was always the star quarterback or the kid of a rich donor getting white-glove treatment. Instead my experience matched GP, handful of students complaining that a tree-balancing exercise is “too harsh” and getting the entire assignment slashed by the professor being pressed to increase the size of the department.
Do they not have Sea Tow in Alaska?
In what sense? As a normie-tier user of Brave’s internal and blocker, it’s worked great. I never became a power-user of uBlock.
