Re:NeXTSTEP on Pa-RISC on Monday January 05, 2026 @10:45PM (#46508511)
I used to have a NeXTStep HP workstation back in the day. Worldcom had hundreds of them running custom network monitoring. I think we were one of,the biggest NeXT installations outside of the NSA.
Reminds me of a privacy training I had to do at Apple. They made a point in the invite to be on time because they had a lot to cover and lateness would not be tolerated. A VP rolled in 2 minutes late and tried the “do you know who I am” thing. The instructor basically said “I don’t care. You are late. Go away and reschedule for another time”. I loved that he could just shut down a VP like that.
What about the privacy issue that you can’t use it without giving them your phone number? I downloaded the app hoping I could finally use it since the app supports Sign-in with AppleId, but it still wants my phone number.
Re:First ROM Shadowing on Saturday April 22, 2023 @09:58PM (#35672653)
The TRS-80 CoCo used ROM shadowing to allow access to all 64K of RAM. The default mode was 32K RAM and 32K ROM.
Re:The Internet origin story you know is wrong on Tuesday June 21, 2022 @11:18PM (#31831652)
Not one mention of FIdoNet?
Apple Park is nice for the amenities but the open plan does indeed suck. Still open plan at Apple Park is still a step up from my previous open plan office in Sunnyvale. Same shitty open plan but worse amenities.
Re:A toxic, nightmarish lake created by our thirst for tech on Friday October 16, 2020 @02:00AM (#24797942)
What does the Permanente quarry have to do with tech exactly? It is a limestone quarry and has been since 1939.
If you turn off Find My iPhone it will also disable the new Bluetooth beaconing feature.
Re:The Big 5.0: Transit app gets a makeover on Sunday September 02, 2018 @08:51PM (#17899503)
I tried both for a while. I liked The Citymaper UI better, but Transit actually shows the live position of the bus. Transit wins. This is with VTA in Santa Clara, California.
Re:Is the open office layout dead? on Sunday August 20, 2017 @09:12PM (#15061235)
Many people at Apple don’t have private offices today. I think this may only be true in some of the main IL buildings. I’ve been in open plan for two years now since moving to Sunnyvale and still dislike it.
Re:How Apple Set the Internet Back 15 Years on Friday October 24, 2014 @11:38PM (#8507127)
I find it ironic that he rails on barriers to content, but you can't view a demo of his app without the barrier of giving him your email address.
