this sounds really dumb, but it seems that if people are that motivated by progress bars and blinking lights and flashy animations, we should really be developing video game HUDs into AR headsets to get people to grind in real life instead of video games.
how does an hourly wage not satisfy what you are talking about
Serious question, why do people feel motivated to grind gold in video games, but not money in real life?
i think a certain brand of hackernews user just likes being completely obtuse in a bid for superiority.
how could anyone possible enjoy x mainstream thing, i only use y hyper niche thing that signals my status to tech nerds.
queue the guy talking about the most obscure linux distro you can possibly imagine.
a better example would be whether you could put a train from 1845 on a modern track, or fire a musketball from an M16
idk why this idea is so prevalent. sure theres weird avant-garde jazz, but the vast majority is usually relatively simple "standard" with improv over it.
> the end of Blizzard
extremely exaggerated. Recent reports said they are the top game studio at microsoft.
im talking about research compute allocation
Sergey better really go into "founder mode" or else Thomas Kurian (head of GCP) will continue to eat Deepmind's lunch.
Between selling TPUs to external companies and now hosting competitor models, Gemini just doesnt have the full faith of the Alphabet capital allocators, and I can't really blame them. A mature company like google would rather just expand their extremely profitable cloud business rather than dump billions into a black hole on the off chance they achieve RSI or superintelligence or whatever.
cmon man, dont let facts get in the way of a narrative. just let gamers whine in peace
Blizzard has not been independent since 1994, but people on the internet love picking some arbitrary point in time when "Blizzard died" when in reality the timeline and quality of their releases has almost zero correlation with who they were owned by at the time.

non frontier intelligence will be a commodity. Frontier intelligence will be a high margin luxury good. this is how most markets work
Why is everyone not understanding that good cheap EVs are banned in the US? If people actually got an experience a Chinese EV I dont think it would be nearly this bad.
what an embarrassment for the West. We are truly a 20th century civilization
> We're already building wind and solar at bananas rates [0]
no we arent. China added the entire capacity of the US grid in solar in the last 4 years and they are accelerating. That is bananas. We've barely increased total grid capacity in the last 20 years. It should be a national embarrassment. Energy abundance is possible, and one of the greatest ways to improve peoples lives. There are no energy poor countries that are rich.
Half the state of Nevada should be a solar farm at this point if anyone actually cared about climate change, and that would do 10x to imrpve peoples lives than telling them not to use the dryer.
again, the degrowth mindset relies on a fundamental paucity of imagination and will to actually solve the problem.
Whats so bizarre about non-americans is just how beaten down you are about these types of topics. You are post rationalizing why you shouldnt have access to modern technology. Youre so defeated you just cant understand how insane you sound.
> I don't really mind hanging clothes, it doesn't take that long.
I mean sure, but i still would rather not do it. I could wash my dishes by hand too, its not reallly that big of a deal, but i dont because we have technology. We have solutions to all these things, and your politicians have somehow convinced you that its fine that you cant use them. Bizzaro.
China is literally summoning essentially free energy out of hat. It actually is extremely trivial. you just install solar panels like you arent living in 1950.
They installed the entire grid capacity of the US in 4 years and they are accelerating. THere is a path to infinite free energy, but youd rather worry about doing your laundry at night.
Maybe they should, idk actually invest in renewables at massive scale instead of telling the people of a purportedly rich country that they should have to ration energy like its wartime? Why do people in Europe accept quality of life hits for dumb fake arguments about degrowth when you could literally just build more renewables.
If you arent growing you are dying. This is base biological reality. Its completely intuitive.
what makes you think we are even remotely close to bumping against the barriers of infinity? like what are you even talking about?
It drives me up a fucking wall that you think this is a preferable strategy to just idk, installing some solar or wind? Why is this so difficult. We have the technology for practiciatlly infinite cheap energy but we just wont build it. Are the Chinese the only people that arent too stupid to understand this?
i think there are plenty of books written about the topic. Im not sure hacker news is the best place to get your answer.
i love Age of Mythology, but why did you feel the need to decompile it? Its got a great world editor if you were trying to "mod" it.
serious question how could you possible argue this is monopolistic when Disney, Netflix, and Youtube exist. It doesn't pass the barest level of scrutiny.
would you trade the old growth forests for Seattle? I would. I quite like people and cities. But it feels like all these arguments end up running towards some misanthropic dead end about how humans are a blight on the planet.
We tolerate extracting resources from the biosphere because it supports a higher human population. Barring actions that will lead to extinction events, I think we should continue to extract resources from the planet that support human flourishing.
> If the species are dying because of us then it's not just life, it's our behavior driving their extinction.
call me crazy but i think human behavior is in fact a subset of "life"
What exactly was the benefit of old growth forest to humans? I understand completely what happened, i just struggle with the downstream moral implication these sorts of stories are supposed to tug at.
Is the point that people moving into the American west should have froze to death rather than chop down trees for fire and shelter? The trees had much more utility to humans as fuel than it did as a forest at that moment, and unless you think biomass is an intrinsic good regardless of whether it helps humans, i dont see anything wrong with what happened.
you know absolutely nothing about the internal architecture of Jev. why are you being so confident?
another famous piece of Von Neumann lore is that he constantly advocated nuking the Soviets.
