Re:Malware uses LLMs to rank victims by how much they're worth on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:34PM (#50317630)
“ Makes me want to have like 5 separate computers”

You forgot one.

DS9 was kinda crazy. It starts with the Bajorans, who represent oppressed and conquered Palestinian/Jews, winning against the oppressive colonizing imperium by using terrorism. It keeps making the point that against an immoral colonizer oppressing your land and people, terrorism is a moral course of action to win an asymmetric war.

Not sure mainstream tv would still follow this logic today.

Climate is out. Climate tech too.

AI is in.

Re:Show HN: A working Nintendo in ~1GB of Qwen weights on Friday October 30, 2026 @02:22PM (#50308108)
It would be a natural extension of the current work in software. Every layer of abstraction/web/scripting language adds seemingly 10x in both ram and processing time, undoing the advancement of 1000x faster processors and ram increases.

But at some point we’re hitting a wall here. If we want our software to undo 100,000x more processing powers, we need that llm software emulation layer.

Re:How Do You Take a Picture of a Black Hole? on Friday October 30, 2026 @07:07AM (#50302344)
Newtonian gravity gives infinite time to fall into black hole?

I thought you need at least special relativity for time dilution.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:32AM (#50275390)
Firstly backtick doesn't go to the most recently used.

The whole window arranging so you can click on them doesn't help you when you have multiple desktops, close some terminal, and jump to some other terminal three desktops away. Like, arranging windows so you see some part of it always, just so you can click on it to switch back and forth between windows feels like a horrible workaround for broken alt-tab behavior. But there's additional levels of weirdnesses that just make using Apple frustrating and scary, like it's constantly throwing random curve balls. It just reeks disorganization. Which is really unfortunate - 10 years ago or so (when witcher task switcher still worked) I really enjoyed working mac. Back then I was mostly coding in the same windows I guess. Nowadays it's business work, and it's just a pain.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:50PM (#50267545)
But even then. If you close a terminal, it'll jump to some random terminal on another desktop. It just doesn't make any sense.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @05:35PM (#50266181)
The problem is that window management is so atrocious in Mac OS that using multiple desktops is just asking for trouble. Like of you close one window of some software, it will jump to some random other window of the same software on some other desktop.

In the end you’ll spend a significant amount of your time trying to “get back” to where you just where (that alt-tab, a possible savior for this in all other OSs, doesn’t work at all on Mac just adds to the UX mess)

Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @02:22PM (#50263536)
I don’t understand this. I have a m4 with 16gb, and it can barely run office. Throw in a couple of browser tabs of ChatGPT and LinkedIn, and it slows to a crawl.

Every app window / browser tab is like 1GB these days.

The crazy thing is, if you have 10 office windows open on a MacBook with 16GB, it brings the system absolutely to its knees.

But the functionally most use would be mostly there with office 95 at the latest (except for syncing).

Why does software nowadays use 1000x the resources of software 25 years ago, but only provides minimally more useful features.

I was channeling my inner Anakin Skywalker awkwardly trying to convince Padme that dictatorships are better (mirroring the previous commenter here, also awkwardly arguing for a dictatorship of a benevolent AI). Funny how it continued with so much discussion, it sometimes seems the hn crowd lives in a galaxy far far away.

Re:How to run a city builder on 16 MHz on Saturday October 24, 2026 @07:30AM (#50220265)
Definitely that was often a solution, but the version I had didn't run on DOS. Not sure whether this was a windows only version I had. Often the problem was ram, extended memory often didn't really work on DOS.
Re:How to run a city builder on 16 MHz on Saturday October 24, 2026 @05:42AM (#50219606)
I was running Sim City 2000 inside Win 3.1 on an 386 with 33MHz (I had 16MB of ram though). But it was virtually unplayable.
Maybe we do need some benevolent technocratic dictator… somebody very wise…
I live in the middle of Berlin. This makes the wiki like a sight seeing book. I think the radius is way too big here.
Whoever responds "we need to stay within our CO2 budgets, otherwise we'll be in real trouble in 20 years" with "being a hippie and organizing your life around recycling" is really building up some sort of weird straw man and not really usefully engaging in solving the problem.
Is this some sort of straw man against trying to stay within your CO2 Budget? I really don’t understand the aim of this comment.
so then if you're not guilty, so not actually innocent, you're like... kinda guilty, right? you could still end up on the no-fly list, or the sex offenders list, or what have you.
Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @02:26PM (#50185387)
The last couple of nightjets in the order from Siemens were converted back to day trains (rail jets), presumably because the trainsets are not economical enough (too few beds).
Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:58AM (#50178309)
The capacity really is the main issue, in terms of cost.

The second is lack of privacy, in terms of attractiveness. 6-people-per-cabin couchette cars have sufficient capacity, but the market isn't quite there anymore.

We basically want to get as many cabins as possible in railcar (to reduce cost), but they're are comfortable and private (to increase attractiveness). With these levers, you can change the operating margin from -15%..-10% to around 10%.

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:56AM (#50178266)
Well, European sleeper is an operator -- their ability to improve the technology/interior is limited, it's a huge task just to keep running.

We are not an operator, so we will work with operators, basically adding our railcars to their trains.

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:40AM (#50178117)
"New goal: not exceed 2°C, then bring the temperature back down to 1.5°C"

It kind of feels people have given up. I'm working on a startup that aims to replaces aviation (the most difficult emissions to avoid) with night trains in Europe (currently economically uncompetitive). It's an obvious impact story, but impact appears to be "out".

Re:Development of Norton Commander on Saturday October 17, 2026 @01:11PM (#50132921)
Totalcmd on windows. On Mac I’m using some off-brand klone that’s kinda ok but uses like 1GB of memory per instance window. Mac OS is such a shit show these days.

My wisdom teeth pushed out against all the other teeth. It was painful, they had to come out. It was a couple months too late. My lower front teeth got kinda crooked then, due to being pushed together, and still are, 20 years later.

integrating the functionality of a download manager, the kind of software that's been around since longer than 2002.
Re:Making big downloads resumable in Firefox on Monday October 12, 2026 @07:57PM (#50064724)
That’s like trickery anno 2002. How come this hasn’t been solved in the last decades?

I used to play GTA San Andreas on an n270 netbook, I believe at 1024x600. Didn’t run well, but was definitely playable.
