Google "Ban the box" a scheme at least some employers including my own use. Which looks to not take into account in the early stages of the recruitment process about criminal convictions.

I am no expert on but I believe it works quite well. By allowing people in situations like yours, at least getting a chance to get a foot in the door.

Of course some roles may not be available.

Good luck in your search.

Re:Toyota to remanufacture cars up to three times in UK on Saturday January 08, 2022 @11:28AM (#29853175)
The demand in the EU and UK Cars for existing models which do not have speed limit restrictions will be healthy.

From my understanding any Newly launched models from 6th of June 2022 have to be fitted with a speed limiter.

Of course the other reasons due to a shortage of second hand models and new models manufactured recently help With ICE cars soon being banned from being sold in 2030 just eight years time.

So a well renovated, tried, tested and trusted existing model will suffice for many users. While Toyota save on R&D.

Live in the middle of nowhere or no charging point near your residence? Simply want a car which is not as "restricted"? Plenty of customers will have a refurbed non restricted ICE car, even if a 2021 model years later.

Heathrow have plans for a air taxi service by 202

"Vertical and Heathrow Airport partner on air taxi services" https://www.airport-technology.com/news/vertical-heathrow-ai...

Hopefully this trial 159 scheme takes off one simple number to call regardless of bank.

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2021/09/stop--hang-up...

I mentioned to a fewer older family members and they were all for a simple number to call.

Most iPhones hit the second user market whether gifted or sold on.

They have a far higher trade in or resale value than any other brand.

It actually causes a bigger second hand market of phones if they have a longer life. Plenty of users still want the latest or there abouts. While others will happily go for the nearly new.

The Android VPN app has just had wireguard added. It's not on the pc or iOS version I believe as of now
The major concern for both parties is not just the short to mid term cost of equipment and space. It's the long term liability if the employee gets rsi or major Musculoskeletal pain or indeed eyesight issues etc.

I know our health and safety manager expects it is going to be a big issue in years to come. While he cares for human beings those around him are all for the "online training course on WFH best practices". To make the person digitally sign they watched and understood. Also known as give the employer some defence for later claims..

Offering people items from the existing offices which most people simply can't fit in their homes. But again being noted so when people complain... Same is being done by offering people to go in to office.

Those hours crouched over a laptop or sat on a seat with little support won't hurt straight away.

Plenty will on here have a nice home office and chair with good lighting. But plenty in many "office" jobs won't and can't justify.

It won't be those who had a physical job we see in older age hobbling around in the future..

Re:The History of the CD-ROM Magazine (2016) on Thursday November 12, 2020 @01:56PM (#25073411)
CD ROMs way too high tech, I recall the day when Cassette tapes first made it on to magazines no more typing lines of code from magazines. :-)
Thank you for sharing looks good.

I often prefer to use a web based use as typically just want to learn and practice. Or indeed make try basic little projects.

So will all being well, start studying the book this week.

Agreed, a complaint is a gift can help you in so many ways. Often better than never knowing why a customer just upped and left.

A good example, where biting your tongue then steping outside. Before pressing send for all parties was probably a wise lesson.
Re:Atlassian tells employees they can work from home forever on Saturday August 08, 2020 @07:42AM (#24090848)
This is going to be the issue those in groups or made relationships with those often in person are at present fine with. But those who haven't or as new teams and personnel come on board they will possibly not make that same real bond.

I think in 6, 12 or 24 months possibly longer for some. Many will regret when they look back they didn't realise what was really going on with the company. They just heard from their contacts and also heard what people wanted them to. They got stuck in a silio.

The new section of the office where a team was parachuted in which somehow has an impact.

How do people expect to form casual but often extremely useful contacts with the people who really know what's going on in other teams, department, divisions or other locations?

You won't hear the gossip from your workmate who works early or late, the postroom, the security guard or receptionist about that out of hours meeting the management team had or whatever.

How will you really know of you haven't been offered a poisoned promotion?

To a degree your rely on being told the full picture by those with the overview. Which is likely to be the management. Which no doubt may happen in many places the majority of times until the one time it really affected you or your team.

For example a group of us headed in to the Riverside sub office on the outskirts of London by the Thames yesterday. For aircon offices and a r oriverside pint at lunchtime as the UK had its hottest August day in 17 years.

Straight away those who caught on a group of us had met up in the office started to wonder why? With a number of messages and calls wondering what we were up to.

While we bonded and had a change of scenery. Some of those at home, for no reason got paranoid.

All very good but we got to hope us all sitting at home popping out now and then. Provides enough of an economy to employ us all. A lot of the people who consume and therefore pay for the work we do. Work in those facilities management, building security, shop worker, cafe and restaurant workers, public transportation etc.

If there is no demand or it dramatically reduces possibly a lot of us remote workers will find we also are no longer needed or far worse compensated.

We all need to look at the chain that feeds us.

What is going to replace the busy cities, airports, offices and all the infrastructure and it's supply chain?

A lot of IT roles will disappear also.

Will there? Plenty of workers fly in from non EU countries to work in the UK and rest of EU.

We have staff from Asia fly in with a few days notice and vice versa.

Few ever need a work visa they simply visit as a tourist. Certainly if a short trip.

Not that what they are doing is correct. But it happens so regularly, I don't think many office workers even consider they need a work visa.

Anyhow this saga has just proven the vast majority of meetings can be done remote hence why your all working remote will be the companies reply.

If a global company the data is probably shared across the globe and regulated as need be already.

I really think people need to be careful for what they wish for with remote work.

Companies will see savings (well what they perceive as savings) and will see margins increasing.

People thinking they will get the money back the company saves on property costs or paid that "London/New York/SF weighting". That or fully kitted home office's. I think they maybe disappointed.

When a company makes big savings they then often get hungry for more.

Big effect as it will on many pension funds and so on.
Re:Facebook to let users turn off political adverts on Wednesday June 17, 2020 @07:07AM (#23550034)
While I am a nerd hence why an avid reader of HN. My wife is the opposite but if I or someone else points out a useful tip which takes little effort but makes something better/easier it will be read.

Also we need to remember politics in the western nations is still something most people can talk about or mention and put a poster up or wear a badge. The biggest issue will be people avoiding you thinking you might bore them on the subject.

Go to a number of countries in the world. Random political adverts being spotted on your feed may cause you much grief and possibly harm in some way.

It's a perfect article to comment on and consider. As you write many of us may work on e commerce projects now or at some point. Plus I would think many of us are problem solvers at heart.
Re:Remote work means anyone can take your job on Thursday May 28, 2020 @11:15AM (#23338302)
The employers can also balance out the wages.

Your saving on travel, they save on building, building services and location adjusted wages.

With huge savings being made by all businesses and less costs on the balance sheet.

Wages will come under intense scrutiny.

Re:Is hot desking dead in a post-COVID19 work world? on Monday May 18, 2020 @09:43AM (#23222178)
Hotdesking with barriers and partions and more cleaning. Probably as it should of been in the first place.

From what I am seeing is plenty do want to go in to the workplace and realise if others do work from home they can use it to their own advantage.

There is a good chance that eventually the risk of Covid for most people will somehow be much more remote.

Do we really think people will not try to use in person social contact as an advantage?

Yep I think a lot of users might be quite annoye, if they didn't have the reverse out of a click option.
Many people in hot countries tend to cover up however hot it is.
If you live in a country with little daylight for part of the year your going to consider supplements of Vitamin d.

Also pickled herring is a delicacy in the many countries which have fared well in Europe in the fight against covid 19.

Also oily fish like salmon and mackerel are good for vitamin D.

Yet for many Brits it's a fish we rarely consider but is one of the biggest Concerns about the UK denying access to EU nation's to certain waters I believe with Brexit.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herring_as_food

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickled_herring

Indeed a lot of people especially when they start out, move to a new location. Away from family and friends and the office banter and social keeps them sane and not lonely.

Same with many older staff, kids have moved out or have their own lives. So many again love the office gossip and banter. Enjoying poping to the cafe or pub at lunchtime with others.

They also realise they need to ensure they are not just a remote voice on a concall and the odd email.

It seems at present the younger and older with lockdown are suffering more than those in more busier households.

No idea of the business your in but remote work is not working for many sales people or client services and many others that need to deal with external customers.

If those who keep the sales and contracts coming in want offices then ceo's will ensure they get them.

Offices will become smaller and more regional but they will exist.

Over the years via osmosis I have learnt so much by overhearing colleagues talking. I met people I would not normally as not quite my line of business or typically we are both just cc'ed in emails. These have become contacts, friends, allies and others simply provided opportunities or put in a good word for me.

I can choose where I work and have pre Covid era worked a lot at home due to projects I had on. But was planing a lot more time in the office this year as I knew I needed to ensure I mixed more.

Chatting with very senior managers, directors and ceo's simply won't happen if remote. But does when your both some of the only people in a quiet satellite office.

No need to brown nose but being more than a name on a chart helps.

Everyone is working very effectively at the moment as in most places there is with lockdown little else distraction wise and many focused on ensuring they stay employed.

In fact for many employees I think the moment they don't have to take a video con call which runs on as the client knows they have no commute and little else to do. Many people will be happy.

Some companies and departments will go remote and thrive in the long-term and others will once things settle find they need many staff back in an office.

Well for some cafe and restaurants Shisha.
Re:NHS rejects Apple-Google coronavirus app plan on Monday April 27, 2020 @01:48PM (#22998110)
With GCHQ advising on the App..
Gossip and social interaction.

It can seem pointless but when you find out that the random co worker shares an interest/friendship with a senior figure in the company, as you witness a brief exchange. A major mistake many make is not realising who "knows of" others in the workplace, they may normally never even greet one another.

The mail/parcel facilities guy mentions he is helping set up that new set of desks or has to come in early for a major delivery. Small things but can be very insightful.

On nodding terms with the help desk person who then happier to help you when you need urgent help.

Making polite small talk waiting for a meeting or con call to start. About some minor incident, feature or event in the office you both use. Even just waffling on about the carparking situation or the local supermarket or sandwich shop you all end up at when visiting the Office.

When you send that email to the team and whoever else. But you get that brief bit of feedback (it might just be a glance and a grin) across the desk that you just won't get via remote messaging services.

Overhearing or partaking in random conversations in the office which a snippet of become useful sometimes months or years later.

Having impromptu training sessions as either as teacher or pupil because well we are all there and now is as good a time as ever.

Opportunities as the person speaking to the person who is first asked.

I got offered an internal extra role which involves little but ensures I get an additional payment monthly on top of my wages and useful on the CV. All because stood by my then managers desk . I have changed my main role several times in the 9 years or so since but still have this little extra role and the payment.

Hosting and receiving guests on behalf of others or the department as in the Office. Over the years I have made a lot of contacts this way and got involved in a number of projects and ongoing operations simply from being the stand in host or dragged along by a manager/director as their person who understands technology or simply for a second opinion..

Plenty of times sat in the office and become the resolver (even if asking those working remotely) in the eyes of those that need help. Even though credit given to others the person helped remembers your face and name.

Getting offered the extra tickets for a event the company sponsor as others pull out and well your there.

As I look back over decades of work it's nearly always meeting people in person even in passing where things happen. A quick interaction which I have forgotten may be remembered by someone who comes back into your working life decades later. Much less likely your recall those you once called or emailed in passing years later.

I work at home regularly but would be extremely concerned if unable to regularly visit my employers offices.

Never be in the office to often but been there regularly enough.

There will be many Covid survivors with lung damage who once the air pollution starts to increase find they struggle badly. In fact many of us may struggle if as predicted levels dramatically and quickly increase as lockdowns are lifted.

Plenty of us may also struggle with the noise pollution also.

There will be a massive push for clean air and possibly a more quieter world.

It also leaves those two countries at risk of suddenly having an outbreak which spreads rapidly.

After a few months of being cautious of no major risk People will relax.
