On the other hand this one is closing its registrations, and deleting users registered after some date X.
Re:Opera 14 for Android is out, based on Chromium on Tuesday May 21, 2013 @07:11AM (#5742904)
Same experience here, running this on my HTC Desire. At least Opera is nice enough to provide older apks here:

I downgraded mine promptly. Future doesn't look good though.

Re:Ask HN: How are you securing your laptops in public places? on Thursday August 05, 2010 @03:41PM (#1579084)
I'm sorry, I did not mean to suggest otherwise. The illusion indeed is maintained in the vast majority of cases.
Re:Ask HN: How are you securing your laptops in public places? on Thursday August 05, 2010 @10:36AM (#1578152)
No, most people are not basically good, not really. It is an illusion of goodnes that they give off, due to their indifference, and their going with the flow. If the flow is good, the illusion is maintained, and all is well. But when push come to shove, they will show how little they really care.

Way to go with your sweeping generalisation.

Not like the article is any better.

Re:Ruby Quicktips on Sunday February 14, 2010 @11:11AM (#1124771)
Looks more like worthless Rails tips.
Re:Subscriptions are the New Black on Monday February 01, 2010 @11:52AM (#1092751)
Making your site a frequently used one is not solving the password problem; it's sidestepping it.
Re:Ad Hominem Is More Important Than You Recognize on Friday January 01, 2010 @12:13AM (#1025478)
And this is the crux of it right here. The author is confusing the two goals of making a point, and having that point heard. Surely there are better ways to market yourself than by spewing ad hominems, which just go to diminish your supposedly more important goal of actually making a solid point.
Re:Russia may send spacecraft to knock away asteroid on Thursday December 31, 2009 @09:54AM (#1024343)
That would be quite a feat.

Re:A Job Posting in JSON on Thursday October 29, 2009 @04:56PM (#910892)
Kickass skillz, yeah. I just puked a little in my mouth.
Yeah, I've had just about enough of these projects self described as the most awesome thing since sliced bread. How about we act like adults.

I have to say, this is garbage.

I want Sandy back. :)

No really, anything like it out there, or will I have to make my own?

how's so?
Re:Top Programming Fonts on Monday May 18, 2009 @05:39PM (#615754)
You probably mean Envy Code R? And yes, it's a great font. I wouldn't use any other.
I figured school and I weren't a right fit some time in high school, so I dropped out then. Never even heard of unschooling at the time, I just considered myself an autodidact. That was now more than two years ago, and I still haven't started "unschooling" myself.

It was a problem when my parents threw me out soon after my 18th birthday, for dropping out of school. I had to get a miserable job, coding PHP for about the same amount of money my friend got stacking boxes in a warehouse. That was nothing unexpected, it just shows how much programmers are valued in my country.

The job made me depressed, unable to do anything. Not learn, nothing.

Now I'm working with a friend on a startup company, poised to solve all our problems, but I wouldn't say that's going so great either.

But I don't regret anything. School wasn't a good way of learning for me, and I will continue my education on my own, as soon as this company gets of the ground and I have some time.

Re:Tables vs CSS: CSS Trolls begone on Monday February 02, 2009 @05:21PM (#463012)
Thank you, I couldn't have said it better myself.

The author seems to think it's either all tables, or no tables. From one extreme to another.

I prefer not to use tables for layout, but I will if I have to. :-)

> Of course, all this research does nothing to help explain dumb jocks.

Wasn't expecting to see that there :-)

Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with alienation? on Friday January 16, 2009 @02:06PM (#437091)
So you're saying everyone has the potential to be great? That's just not true. Yes, most people never come near their full potential, but not everyone is born equal, and not everyone can do anything, if they just try hard enough.

On second read, maybe that's not what you're saying, and I missunderstood. Forgive me--I haven't slept in 40 hours. :-)

Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with alienation? on Friday January 16, 2009 @12:55PM (#436946)
What's success? What does it mean in and of itself?

Certainly, they can be successful, but at what? Not likely anything great.

Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with alienation? on Friday January 16, 2009 @10:01AM (#436674)
Haha, I only just noticed, that the answer could have some kind of bizzare double meaning.
Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with alienation? on Friday January 16, 2009 @09:57AM (#436672)
I'd have to disagree with that. There is actually quite a high threshold, as should be obvious, from the percentage of people doing great things.

You may not notice it, if you live in your own little isolated world.

Yes, you can be very intelligent, and incompetent; but no, you cannot be competent, able to get stuff done, and not intelligent.

Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with alienation? on Friday January 16, 2009 @05:34AM (#436425)
Small is life, tall is death, and fat is dungeon? About 10 minutes, but I did have to write it down
Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with alienation? on Friday January 16, 2009 @05:04AM (#436398)
If you can be something better, then you're not what you think you are.

Are you just speaking hypothetically, or do you really think you are unable to be smart? Because if you do think that, chances are you're wrong.

> In short, what I am is an overpowering urge to be anything else.

Join the club.

Re:Ask HN: How do you deal with alienation? on Friday January 16, 2009 @04:56AM (#436391)
You can't not be what you are. At least, not yet :-)
