News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

The article outlines some reporting changes (from OMB to White House chief of staff??) to get around that apparently
Re:An update on Dart macros and data serialization on Wednesday January 29, 2025 @05:30PM (#42872117)
Why is it that Lisp family macros are easy to implement and use, but not so in other languages?
Re:You vs. a Billionaire: An Interactive Perspective on Wealth on Wednesday January 22, 2025 @12:01PM (#42794908)
I don't think billionaires should even be a thing.
Re:TikTok could bypass US blockade by making a PWA on Friday January 17, 2025 @05:00PM (#42743730)

Unfortunately, I spent more than a trivial amount of time wondering what an Einstein of Adtech looks like.
Re:Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year' on Tuesday January 14, 2025 @12:34PM (#42700655)
You're not getting fired now, you're getting "moved out" or "exited"
You’ll be fine. It’s like laundering money.
Re:Show HN: A playable game of Tetris inside a PDF on Thursday January 09, 2025 @11:37AM (#42647338)
Does not even seem to be a valid PDF according to Preview.app
Re:Perplexity Got Ads on Saturday January 04, 2025 @02:07PM (#42596886)
I would like to use Kagi if it had some kind of anonymous searching
Re:C++ Is an Absolute Blast on Tuesday December 24, 2024 @01:46PM (#42503938)
I think I will take another look. I recently helped my grandson with his university C++ assignment. It was a lot better than I remember C++ in the 90s.

Fun wise though, I get the most fun with dynamic languages that are highly interactive like Forth, Common Lisp and Smalltalk. I don’t have to drop out of the zone to kick the compiler all the time.

Re:IRATA.ONLINE: A Community for Retro-Computing Enthusiasts on Sunday December 15, 2024 @12:01AM (#42421589)
Well now I know what I’m sinking time into this Christmas break!
You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.
Re:Starlark Programming Language on Monday December 09, 2024 @10:31AM (#42367100)

What’s this all about? Don’t most languages?

Is it possible for my/my employer’s insurer to convince my employer to fire me if my or my dependent’s health needs are “too expensive”?

Could they eg. Give my employer a lower rate as an incentive to do that?

Re:The Biggest Shell Programs in the World (Wiki) on Saturday December 07, 2024 @12:40AM (#42347548)
I would add Bash Forth to that. String-threaded concatenative programming!
Re:California teacher dies from suspected rabid bat bite on Wednesday December 04, 2024 @12:56AM (#42314807)
I've been through the rabies protocol after a bite from random homeless dog I tried to help.

In the US with insurance it's about $5K out of pocket, and 3 or 4 (can't remember exactly) visits to the ER. the first visit they inject some gelatinous stuff all over the site of the bite site plus the vaccine. And no, they don't inject in your abdominal area anymore. The case will be referred to the city and if possible, the animal will be tested for it. I'm not sure if they have to kill the animal to test. They'll let you know if it was positive though.

It's extremely rare to get rabies, but also it's extremely lethal.

Re:PR Process Is Killing Morale and Productivity on Saturday November 30, 2024 @01:17AM (#42279941)
I have quit places because of their PR process.
Re:Spotify has shut down several API endpoints on Thursday November 28, 2024 @05:55PM (#42269176)
And classical music gets proper special treatment!

People have been begging for that for ages on Spotify’s forum…

Re:Warp terminal – no more login required on Tuesday November 26, 2024 @01:08PM (#42248212)
I would like to know what folks are doing that requires a high performance terminal.

I don't think I'm much more productive at Terminal.app in 2024 than I was in 386 Linux console-connected to other computer via 14400 dial-up in 1999.

Re:The shrimp welfare project on Monday November 18, 2024 @10:40AM (#42173385)
I think we'll blow through these limits. Humanity has never ceased to disappoint me.
Are you wondering if epidemiologists are doing climate science?
Re:C++ Template Macroprogramming versus Lisp Macros on Saturday November 16, 2024 @02:50AM (#42155126)
Pffft, I’d just #. that factorial call and it’d be a normal defun.
Re:Llama-OCR: An Open-Source Llama 3.2 Based OCR Tool on Saturday November 16, 2024 @02:10AM (#42154988)
We tried this and it was an absolute shit show for us.
Re:All the data can be yours: reverse engineering APIs on Tuesday November 12, 2024 @10:53AM (#42116523)
There’s probably a group of poor bastards on call at 5am, poring over alerts, and logs in Datadog etc wondering WTF is wrong with their applications.

Give ‘em a shout out by saying “hi” in a request parameter or something while you’re reverse engineering.

Re:Thoughts on the Resiliency of Web Projects on Monday November 11, 2024 @12:23AM (#42104745)
What do you mean by a flat stack? LAMP etc?
Re:Even Microsoft Notepad is getting AI text editing now on Thursday November 07, 2024 @10:46AM (#42077653)
I’m surprised Windows isn’t given away for free at this point.

Re:Why Pascal Deserves a Second Look on Friday November 01, 2024 @11:17AM (#42017736)

Are you talking about the Free Pascal implementation here?

Re:ChatGPT Search on Thursday October 31, 2024 @11:52PM (#42013919)
Must I wait for it to “type out” my search results?
