Hence why it is important to be thorough.

Plus they will do it anyway. There is no shame or honor regulating their behavior.

Accountability is what was missed last time and is the only way forward.

If you like Looker semantic models and Git workflow, but want to build your own AI-BI platform now, I recommend looking at Credible Data as the engine:

https://www.credibledata.com/

(I have no connection to the company, just know the industry well.)

Credible uses Malloy as the semantic model language. Malloy is built by the original Looker founder and friends, essentially as their next-gen "what would we do differently now" project. It's been discussed on HN a few times in comparison to PRQL, Cube, etc.

Credible layers on some serving infrastructure and RAG and the like. They specifically target the SWE persona as their user. Very technical team with good perspective on the future of the industry IMO.

Not to get all internet indignant about it, but the island is currently split into two countries thanks to the colonization by Indonesia. Which human rights advocates and indigenous leaders consider to be a systematic ethnic cleansing and cultural erasure of the indigenous Melanesian Papuan population. Along with an ecocide driven by a toxic mix of military occupation, corporate exploitation, and resource extraction.

The situation in West Papua is essentially one of the least recognized humanitarian and ecological tragedies slowly happening right under our noses.

The website seems perfectly clear and functional.

They call that style an Auto-Battler RTS. "Mechabellum" is the most notable title.
Re:I guess I'm using WebP now? on Sunday October 11, 2026 @05:11PM (#50047851)
At what year would you say the web should have stabilized on the basics?
The technical feasibility is not the concern. It's that they would still have the logs of the queries anyway. "We're not uploading license plate images, just regular application audit logs."
Re:Nix wrote half of my debugger on Sunday October 11, 2026 @04:49PM (#50047673)
If you are in fact worried about the amount of work involved then I don't see why you would bother to comment at all, which is just more calories burned.

Anyway, cynically asking whether people are self-promoting (without any attempt at evidence) is far more than just sharing your opinion.

And it's clear you didn't force yourself to read through all that "Claude-authored text", otherwise you would not be left wondering if peter_d_sherman was self-promoting. (I don't know any of these people but it's clear they're all different).

My point was to tell you that you are exhibiting unacceptable behavior for a civil discussion. That's an example of sharing an opinion with justification.

Re:Nix wrote half of my debugger on Sunday October 11, 2026 @02:00PM (#50045937)
No, but you don't have admonish them or accuse of self-promotion. Use the flag button if you feel so inclined. You don't have to try to negate their excitement about something that seems genuinely novel, especially when not really engaged on the content of the project / post. Which it doesn't seem like you even really looked at.
Re:Nix wrote half of my debugger on Sunday October 11, 2026 @01:04PM (#50045341)
Wow, that looks like a lazy and disrespectful attack.

Rewind VM appears to be made solely by fzakaria, the author of the submitted article. I don't see any connection to peter_d_sherman, who is clearly not a sock puppet account. It took 10 seconds to check that info.

God forbid people on HN get excited about a technology.

You, on the other hand, clearly have an axe to grind against LLM usage. Which is fine and all as a personal preference, but not a reason to post such a comment.

It is in no way hard for me to say that I'd vote for the lesser of two Nazis. Especially when the consequentialism is so obvious.

The only justification for not voting at all is some sort of belief in "accelerationism" that will lead to a revolutionary overthrow of the Nazis. Which is not just unrealistic, but also likely to have worse consequences if it did proceed.

(It's also stupid, because you can both vote for the lesser Nazi AND still keep working towards your overthrow or whatever.)

At the end of the day, we're talking about people prioritizing their own self-satisfying moral superiority over the actual greater good. Being an adult means sucking up and doing things you'd rather not sometimes. I'm going to keep calling people out on that childish thinking and illusion of moral superiority. The proof is all around us right now.

This really seems like the most fair situation, if we don't want to a) let retired people stop contributing their fair share, b) kick old people out of their lifetime homes during their most vulnerable years.
Of course, the people who already own land in the now-hip neighborhood either don't want it to change and grow at all, or they want the price to go up as much as possible so they can cash out. The existing owner class never have an incentive for ownership to be affordable...
What they mean is the day-to-day "value" of having a roof over your head, in contrast to your ability to make money by selling.

If the area around you is improving substantially, then yes that day-to-day value could be improved by better local shops, maybe a closer office building, nicer parks, etc. Generally stuff like that does not happen quickly though, and really big changes like magically teleporting from boring middle of nowhere to a vibrant cultural downtown don't happen at all.

It's funny because it happens at all levels.

The uber wealthy have their gated communities in the hills.

The very wealthy have their lock on places like Carmel.

The upper-middle class in Santa Cruz or Half Moon Bay try to prevent new condos (or student housing) from being built, because it "destroys the community character."

Everyone wants to pull the ladder up behind them.

Not only do they want the value of the house to go up, but they don't want anything around them to change. No new 5-story condo complex on that one corner. My neighbor shouldn't add a second floor and block my view.
Yes, super annoying. As other comments mentioned, it is very common to say "No sugar added" but then it is still sweetened with stevia or something. Like, I WANTED IT NOT SWEET.

When I visited South America I saw products that would actually more precisely say "sin edulcorante" as opposed to "sin azúcar".

That is exactly why I said, "The campaign funds can of course be used on wedge issues that don't actually relate to Israel" to explain the influence of the funds.
How does it determine a "hit"? By making a query to a database? Then there is a log of the request anyway. Even if the database is on a local laptop there are application logs.

It's not the imagery that's really important, it's tracking the who+when+where.

Yep, they must be super serious about those tips.

That should be the much more important story that NBC follows up on...

Yes I'd vote for "continues supporting rogue client states" versus Nazis.
It's not some magic wand to "make sure Trump is elected". It's give him a slight bump up and Harris a slight push down (mostly by demotivating left-leaning voters so they stay home). Affecting thin margins in an election is different from changing everybody's mind about something.
Ask me in 2023 "will Palestinians be better off under Trump or Harris" and the answer was a no-brainer. We Americans would have been better off too. And a bunch of now dead Iranian citizens. Sheesh, crazy logic by some American voters.
Nothing incongruent there. The campaign funds can of course be used on wedge issues that don't actually relate to Israel. Changing public perception towards scenes of destroyed homes and dead children is much more difficult.
Re:US Man Given Prison Sentence for Bot-Farming Music Streams on Thursday October 08, 2026 @09:20PM (#50014812)
With the Pokemon cards you are vaguely harming a nebulous population of other people who wanted to buy the cards from Walmart but won't get the opportunity. Walmart still earns the revenue, so it's hard to explain that you are "stealing" anything of value.

With fake bot streams it is pretty clearly stealing from the other artists who would otherwise get a greater share of the royalties pool. I see your point, but I really have to stretch my imagination to call them morally equivalent.

In terms of choosing the con, the guy calls himself a musician so he probably just fell into it. I bet there was a slippery slope effect: use bots "just a bit" at first to juice the algorithm for his own real songs. Then dabbling with AI generation to tweak the algorithm more, oh the royalty payments feel good, maybe a few more bots...

Re:How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @11:45AM (#49994466)
And the IRS still requires US Citizens living and working abroad to file tax returns. Tennessee can decide how to tax its residents on their businesses and other assets. "It's just how taxation is done."
Re:How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @11:39AM (#49994379)
The law (at least in California as described in the article) did not permit this behavior. If you didn't actually do the majority of your business in another state then you were illegally evading taxes.

The problem is that this was hard to enforce, so now they have changed the law to something much simpler: if any corporate officer or beneficial owner is a resident of California, then the business is subject to Californian taxation.

Re:How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @11:33AM (#49994285)
As mentioned in the article, the exception is intended for when the majority of the business is conducted in the other state. If in fact you don't do any business in the other state at all, then you are lying and evading taxes. The law is not about how you set things up on Day 1, it's about whether your ongoing behavior is actually consistent with the requirements of the law.
