Re:Was Rust Worth It? on Wednesday October 25, 2023 @07:12PM (#38019545)
"Rust has its warts". Interesting terminology.
Only took a few min to find these. But regardless, it is very loud on the right because they feel its a problem or a source of a problem. Where the left looks at it as just a sign of the times or a progression or even a phase.

Things were pretty non-masculine back in the late 70s and early 80s but nobody seems to care about that. I hate using the catch all of blaming social media but it does play a part in the attention to "issues".

I could post a bunch of links but here are two relevant ones: https://www.cnn.com/style/article/masculinity-for-the-modern... https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/boys-arent-growi...

Also the article tries to pin male graduation rates to masculinity but makes no mention of 300% tuition and crippling debt.

I hate these types of articles that try take one issue and make it the scapegoat for all these complex problems. This over simplification of lifes complexities and how much things suck really need to stop.

I used to be all about this, but now its just a waste of gas for the USPS.
Re:I disabled WiFi on the new Samsung fridge on Monday May 30, 2022 @12:04PM (#31560402)
Pi-Hole with a good collection of block lists is a great option. My samsung TV and a few android devices are the top offenders on my pi-hole admin panel.
Re:Ask HN: What game do you wish existed? on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @04:17PM (#31509949)
A modern Jedi knight game with the lightsaber strength of the classic game.
Re:Show HN: I am building a free version of Strava on Monday May 02, 2022 @08:12PM (#31242759)
Looks good and I will check it out.

The only feature/reason why I still use strava is to send my wife the URL that will tell her exactly where on the map I am (beacon text). I'm guessing there are probably other open source solutions to this problem I have just not looked.

Re:Feds arrest couple, seize $3.6B in hacked Bitcoin funds on Tuesday February 08, 2022 @08:00PM (#30267209)
With a hardware wallet there is still a paper trail that you bought the device. So the feds will be looking for them.

Printing the paper wallets, putting them in a $1 glass jar with a silica packet and burying in your back yard would have been 100 times smarter.

Re:Staff Engineer Communities on Sunday January 23, 2022 @11:29PM (#30053755)
From what I have seen (please correct me). Most orgs generally do:

SE, Senior SE, Staff, Sr Staff... OR SE, Senior SE, Principal, Sr. Principal...

I have not seen many orgs have staff and principal. Architect is not that common.

Re:Staff Engineer Communities on Sunday January 23, 2022 @11:25PM (#30053732)
Similar to the military term for staff sergeant is how I imagined it.
Re:The Revenge of the Hot Water Bottle on Friday January 21, 2022 @04:06PM (#30029995)
I've read about a few cases where the nalgene pops/breaks and leaves you with a wet sleeping bag. Which is one of my greatest camping fears.
Re:In MySQL, use “utf8mb4” instead of “utf8” (2016) on Wednesday January 12, 2022 @01:49PM (#29911186)
How dare you. Also accurate.
Re:How to find a domain's authoritative nameservers on Tuesday January 11, 2022 @02:26PM (#29896476)
Fun fact, you can do the same for an IP address (reverse entry) by doing

> dig -x some_ip_address

Zillow sure did a lot to help with rent going up. We will be feeling the ramifications of their business decisions for years to come.
Re:Show HN: Long Range E-Bike on Friday November 12, 2021 @12:28PM (#29202012)
The biggest issue I have with getting more than 20 miles out of my e-bike is the controller. The manufacturer of the controller set it to shut off when the battery pack hits 42v. (using a 52v pack) Sucks pushing a bike up a hill when you know you still have ~15% capacity remaining.

Re:Flipper Zero: How it’s made and tested on Thursday July 01, 2021 @06:33PM (#27705703)
It has been a long wait, but I am really impressed with the amount of work they have put into this.
Re:Why did bar ends go away from mountain bikes? on Monday May 24, 2021 @12:15PM (#27266156)
On modern mountain bikes you want to be seated for climbs, thats why their geometry is so different from a bike made 10-15 years ago.

Also, first time you catch a bar end on a branch and get sent over the handle bars you will ditch them. (at least I did)

Re:PHP 3.0 Final is out (1998) on Saturday May 22, 2021 @09:23PM (#27251699)
I agree, thats some bad practice and people think its good. I am part of the Uncle Bob clean code fan club. If you need comments and a doc bloc then there is something wrong with your code.
Re:PHP 3.0 Final is out (1998) on Friday May 21, 2021 @07:38PM (#27241333)
PHP 7.x and Laravel really gave the language its big boy pants. Really fun to develop in and looks nothing like the PHP 3.x and 5.x grime.
Re:Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years? on Thursday May 20, 2021 @12:14PM (#27223071)
If you get calf pain, look into the kush foot pads. Worth every penny.
Re:Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years? on Thursday May 20, 2021 @12:13PM (#27223049)
On a charge, 15 miles but depends on your weight and the terrain. My son put 22 miles on one once on a single charge.

Safety wise, yeah wrecks on onewheels can be bad. If you are a speed demon you will break something. If you are careful you should be fine. A set of fangs on the board and a pair of wrist guards are highly recommended. And a helmet at all times.

Re:Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years? on Thursday May 20, 2021 @12:09PM (#27222998)
Onewheel XR. Thought they were dumb when I first saw them. But they are super fun and anytime I can go out and ride it makes me smile. I have ridden 300 miles already. In snow, dirt, sand and streets.
Bitcoin cash and SV are low on the carbon emission cause they forked from BTC right? So they re-used bitcoins early work. Or am I totally wrong here?
Re:Ethereum Breaks Past $3k on Friday May 14, 2021 @04:23PM (#27159290)
XLM (stellar) I think is even cheaper than LTC to do these xfers with.
Anyone try this with tails/tor? how unique were they?
Re:Ethereum Breaks Past $3k on Monday May 03, 2021 @01:15PM (#27027814)
Will the transaction fees for ETH ever adjust downward?
This 100%. When I bike to work I take a route that is 2 miles longer than when I drive. Just to avoid a few left turns and a few busy roads witch sketchy bike lanes. Now that I have an e-bike the commute is actually really fun and I get to work with energy.
Re:No one was in driver’s seat in fatal Tesla crash on Monday April 19, 2021 @04:09PM (#26867394)
Would not surprise me if alcohol was involved.
Re:Apple Approves Parler to Return to App Store on Monday April 19, 2021 @02:08PM (#26866095)
