most people err on the other side of the extreme by being too conservative limiting their potential based on the wrong belief that all successes are due to luck and they can't do anything about it.
Most people woule benefit by being more optimistic and taking more risks. In the modern world, most risks won't destroy you. But you will live a very mediocre life if you believe you dont have much control over external outcome or your own success

Re:Ask HN: Does a framework exist for “open-source SaaS”?
on Wednesday July 26, 2023 @01:00AM (#36873299)
The alternative is non-profit SAAS. It will operate like a company and continously improving based on user feedback. But the goal of the company is not to maximize sharehoder profit but to bring delights to both users and employees with minimal cost to users while taking care of the employees.

It would be great if you have something like this for mobile apps. How will it work if your product has both web and mobile apps, do you have a create a separate backend for the mobile apps?

I haven't a clue and will take sometime to learn more details later. As someone who is not a designer, i tend to pick a framework (eg react) that has many good looking design libraries so that i don't need to style each component. I understand that the demo & examples are meant to show the power and functionalities of this good functional langauge. But the examples are unstyled, plain looking, ugly and seem like will take a lot of work to look good. Since i am not a designer, i just want to plug and play a good looking UI library and focus on business logic. hope i am making sense here.

As a country, it is important that you have smart spies and the way to recruit is to identify potential candidates when they are young and nurture them. But as a parent, it will be your most important responsibility to prevent your kids from falling into this seemingly cool traps and become a spy which will not be a good life for your kids.

Unless companies have too much money to waste, it is hard for me to understand this per user pricing. You have to do the work the create the app, your data gets locked and you have got to pay per user as you scale. Are companies just have too much money or too inefficient?

You were a faang engineer. $3500 should too small to be relevant in your considerations. Your time is much more valuable so instead of thinking about money cost, you should think about time cost. Is building for AR/VR within your competent zone? Do you love building for AR/VR in the long run? These are more important questions.

Re:Ask HN: Career advice for an overly versatile profile?
on Friday July 07, 2023 @02:58AM (#36628187)
your best fit is product manager.
Actually the best is not to get another job if you have some savings but to start another business again. I am 35 too and just quit my job. I no longer want to participate in the rat race. I no longer want to sell my time/freedom. I want to create products that I can leverage. I want to work for my own vision and equity. I live in a country with low cost so I can probably last 3 to 5 years with my current savings.
Re:The World Might Be Better Off Without College for Everyone (2018)
on Friday July 07, 2023 @02:23AM (#36627936)
Or perhaps you are the one who doesn't get it? With so many books/courses/AI available online, you can learn for your entire life without needing to go to school for it as long as you have curiosity and movitivation.
If your goal is to learn and get educated, you don't need college.
College is mostly for getting a job and socialize with your peers(which is more important than most people think).

i saw Tiktok sued a state government too. It is something amazing that only happens in countries like America. In most of other countries, including China, sueing govementment by citizens or private companies is unthinkable and will be faced with severe consequences and in some cases , deaths. This kind of power check is great.
