At this point, isn't the building of the game the actual game?
Re:Why the Bronze Age Collapsed on Thursday October 01, 2026 @11:42AM (#49923194)
Cortes lost a few fingers if I remember from the Tlaxcala (anti-Mexica). Kind of a turn of events for them to become his allies.
Re:507 Mechanical Movements on Thursday August 27, 2026 @01:57PM (#49468705)
You know the Museum of Science in Boston has a bunch of these made in real life iirc for the World Fair in Chicago. They are so fun to see since there's a button you can toggle to activate them. My kid loves watching them go.

Re:Leanstral 1.5: Proof Abundance for All on Saturday July 04, 2026 @01:20PM (#48787068)
Any chance you can share any of your process? Super interesting to hear you use lean as a meta language, I'd be curious to see how you've harnessed this (as I'd like to do the same)!
Re:Toyota Fluorite: "console-grade" Flutter game engine on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @02:06PM (#46979286)
What is a console grade renderer? Specifically, what's considered table stakes and what is Filament missing?
Re:Test Your Square Brackets on Thursday January 15, 2026 @09:45AM (#46633229)
The Objective-C folks probably are chuckling their square brackets send messages.
Re:Why do we need modules at all? on Friday April 04, 2025 @09:10AM (#43581797)
Hard to see a world without modules as a means of compartmentalization for various reasons. You do have to appreciate the exercise what a world without them looks like / the implications.
Re:Apple Exclaves on Monday March 10, 2025 @09:32AM (#43320419)
You have to wonder if it is over engineering, or a resolution for something they've discovered from shipping so many phones. I wouldn't think of the camera as a security vector, but maybe Apple thinks it is?
Re:Behind the scenes: An Apple Event shot on iPhone on Tuesday October 31, 2023 @02:42PM (#38089454)
If you don't have any of those alternatives in the first place.

The Best Food Review Show Ever went to Egypt for a series and the authorities impounded their video equipment and wouldn't let the team access the equipment until they left Egypt. Sunny, the host, was super frustrated but stated that the default was buying a few iPhones and filming the whole show through those devices.

I believe this is the series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-PgumHXWVo

Re:Where can I see Hokusai's Great Wave today? on Thursday May 18, 2023 @01:41PM (#35991485)
The Harvard Art Museum also has a copy: https://harvardartmuseums.org/collections/object/203742

I don't think most folks realize there are a couple of copies in Boston!

Re:Neovim 0.8 Released on Friday September 30, 2022 @03:16PM (#33039402)
Do you have any refs/links of UI thought out at PRs and issues that you think are good examples?
Re:Learn TLA+ on Wednesday September 28, 2022 @04:41PM (#33012966)
One thing I really appreciate about your site is that you have a setup guide, with photos! This is really helpful for folks unfamiliar with how to run a spec.

Re:Learn TLA+ on Wednesday September 28, 2022 @04:33PM (#33012897)
Is there any way to do performance testing with TLA+? I always had the impression that TLA+ could help you validate the design of what you intend to build, but was less helpful if you wanted to see the performance implications of the design.
Re:Retrospection and Learnings from Dgraph Labs on Friday September 16, 2022 @02:01PM (#32869786)
Is Dgraph out of business? I still see their product website up?
Re:Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B on Thursday September 15, 2022 @04:58PM (#32858368)
As much as folks may be unhappy Adobe is taking over Figma, I'm sure the team over at Figma are elated. It's a successful exit for a much loved company and I'm sure the hard working team that built such a fantastic product are being well rewarded by such a large acquisition.
Re:Half of Americans anticipate a U.S. civil war soon on Wednesday July 20, 2022 @04:16PM (#32171642)
Why is science.org reporting on this and not thehill?
Re:Cull your dependencies on Friday June 10, 2022 @10:31AM (#31694738)
Likely worth a read for those that found this interesting is Russ Cox's article on dependencies, Our Software Dependency Problem, at https://research.swtch.com/deps. This post is a bit more detailed and balanced in my opinion.
Re:Silencing the Kinesis Advantage 2 on Wednesday March 16, 2022 @10:24AM (#30699213)
Pre order was out in December, sounds like they are aiming to have the first keyboard drop in the summer. At least it was implied in their blog: https://kinesis-ergo.com/zmk-and-kinesis/
Re:Silencing the Kinesis Advantage 2 on Wednesday March 16, 2022 @10:17AM (#30699123)
I can't wait until the new Kinesis Advantage 360 is out. I'm hoping it's much quieter than this iteration.

Re:Chris Lattner left Swift core team on Monday February 21, 2022 @04:04PM (#30420594)
It's arguably difficult with Objective-C today, let alone C#!
Re:Chris Lattner left Swift core team on Monday February 21, 2022 @04:02PM (#30420581)
Objective-C is such a small and concise language. It doesn't get in the way of development in quite the same way Swift can delay building out a feature due to bikeshedding.
Re:Xcode Through the Years on Thursday January 27, 2022 @08:04PM (#30109440)
It's always been incredible to me that Interface Builder dates back to NextStep, like that's all the way back to 1988! While I don't on the regular use IB, I've always appreciated how easy it is to hook things up and move ahead with a prototype.
Re:DuckDuckGo as a TTY on Thursday October 21, 2021 @09:23AM (#28943981)
typing in the search term "meeple" does not seem to do anything.
Re:A future for SQL on the web on Thursday August 12, 2021 @01:10PM (#28158852)
I'd assume Tim has a different definition of what an app is than what you're thinking of.
Re:CEO of Waymo John Krafcik is leaving on Friday April 02, 2021 @02:18PM (#26674167)
The CEO lists several accomplishments in the press brief. It doesn't appear to say that he's being let go specifically for performance concerns.
Re:Moderna mRNA sequence released to GitHub [pdf] on Monday March 29, 2021 @06:12PM (#26628941)
Cool, but it's the lipid delivery system that is the secret sauce. This is equivalent to giving the source code without a compiler to build it.
Re:Employee works for both Google and Facebook from home on Thursday October 01, 2020 @04:06PM (#24655613)
It's an interesting consideration. This would be a great time for any lawyer to chime in.

Personally I'd think it a matter of taste or etiquette. If I were a full time employee (FTE) at one company, working for another company would personally be a bit of a betrayal of my first employer.

Re:Employee works for both Google and Facebook from home on Thursday October 01, 2020 @04:00PM (#24655560)
A tech employee is being paid for their work. The company assesses the employee's ability and dictates the level, which determines how much work they believe the employee can handle in a typical 40 work week. The balance a company hedges against is the company paying overtime for overestimation of the employee's ability, or under utilizing the resource i.e. the employee.

Generally, if you want to work less it's an option to take an easier job. However, in this instance it seems a severe underutilization to pay a tech salary (40hrs) for potentially (55/2)hrs of work. The company isn't getting it's due, and likely the employee isn't either.

Re:Employee works for both Google and Facebook from home on Thursday October 01, 2020 @12:59PM (#24653332)
A point to keep in mind, tasks does not necessarily equate to writing code. Think for example, writing a design doc, responding to email, or reviewing any kind of metrics. If this person was hired as a manager or a technical lead then the person might be doing non-code work.
Re:Employee works for both Google and Facebook from home on Thursday October 01, 2020 @10:59AM (#24651611)
It does make you wonder how much of the tweet is true. Could entirely be a thought experiment.
