Re:Chrome Is Entrenching Third-Party Cookies That Will Mislead Users

Most people here seem to forget that ads is what pays for the free internet services. The main issue with them is not making the consent more explicit to the user. I think the business model: you either get this for free with ads and targeting, or otherwise you have to pay X, should be more common. I bet most people would pick the free option with ads and targeting.

I got to understand from personal experience that the anti-SOA people are usually the ones who stayed at the same company their entire carers, never saw any model other than the monolithic one, see SOA as a threat to their domain knowledge within the company and simply are not able to see its downsides (because they have adapted their ways of work around it and never experienced anything better).

You are not promoted to manager. It is a different career choice, but the fact that you see it that way explains a lot about your position.
Re:Don't be that open-source user, don't be me
on Sunday June 19, 2022 @06:07AM (#31797944)
For better or worse, open source software is competing with paid software, so expectations for basic support and maintenance need to exist. If there is not enough capacity for this, the maintainers should make it clear upfront in very visible ways so people can use that information when deciding what to use.

It would be extremely useful to be able to filter per country, as not all remote opportunities are available in all countries, but I guess a feature like this would have to involve data submission from the companies themselves.

Nuclear is really the only solution at the moment. It is a shame it took a war for people to start realising this. At least we can all learn with Germany's mistakes now.

Yet another manager not knowing what being a manager is. It is your responsibility to know what your reports are doing and making sure their efforts are recognised and their flaws corrected (or ultimately fired). If you don't remember unless someone keeps sending you self promotional messages, you are the problem, not your reports.

Exactly. Division of labor is essential for any complex project. Whoever says the opposite has probably only worked in simple/small systems.

There are many miscategorizations like that. It is also clearly written by an American leftist, with, for example, Michelle Obama's biography as "mind expanding books everyone should read". I am sure they are completely oblivious to their political and geographical/cultural bias though, as typically happens.

on Thursday September 30, 2021 @02:52AM (#28703844)
Another article where managers show how detached they are and just regurgitate empty manager speak about how emotional and empathetic they are. No single mention to promotions. For some reason companies prefer to waste money and time hiring and training replacements rather than having proper career progression internally. For most developers leaving is the new career progression.
Open your eyes. Reality is shouting in your face. The dozens of dubious management books by "experts" are just making you feel good about not tackling the problem.

Re:Psychology is in a crisis. But not the one you’re thinking of
on Sunday August 15, 2021 @03:06AM (#28186796)
Even clinical psychology seems to me a very dubious area. In many cases it is not linear to evaluate success when the main identification of the problem is based on necessarily limited, indirect and biased data (patient testimony) and the result of treatment is behavioural change. Who controls for potential unintended damaging consequences of behavioural change? Fixing one issue can't be the definition of success when dealing with such a complex system. The approach seems too simplistic. I have seen people coming out of "treatments" with their initial problems apparently fixed but with new perspectives on life that proved to be just as damaging. Some level of scepticism is probably a good thing.
