Re:Why We Wrote our Blog using Rails on Monday July 22, 2013 @11:09AM (#6084144)
I don't want to sound like a douche, but It looks to me that you did it to prove you eat your own dogfood. If you were so unhappy with Tumblr, why didn't you just use another blogging platform or software? There are many alternatives in almost every language known to man.
Is the name Elastic Fusion Power appropriate?
Re:Apple dumps Intel from laptop lines on Friday May 06, 2011 @12:01AM (#2519965)
Really?

Moving away from the X86 instruction set 5 years after the move PowerPC is NOT going to happen, period. ARM is fine for the iPad, but for high performance work it doesn't cut it.

ARM tech & Intel have proven that they can scale, but only Intel has the performance advantage for years to come.

And come on! Fragment the Mac market in laptops with ARM and workstations with Intel chips is a really bad move. The only laptop that would have an ARM chip would be an iPad with a keyboard.

Re:HackerNews exceeds Slashdot in unique visitors on Saturday April 02, 2011 @04:27PM (#2400866)
Call me skeptical, but I've never trusted Compete's numbers. Their service gives stats without citing sources, so I don't know what kind of magic or data interpolation they use.
Re:Got mentioned on Techcrunch but still not enought visitors on Tuesday February 08, 2011 @06:38AM (#2192590)
I don't know. I saw your site and I find it is not easy to use. The first page doesn't tell you what is a virtual bet about. It also gives you to calls to action that are equally important. I would only highlight one of them.

The How to Play page is boring to read. I would replace everything with a form that fills in a Twitter post for you (for which you don't need permissions from Twitter).

Re:Poll: How old were you when you started programming? on Wednesday December 29, 2010 @11:50AM (#2049258)
I began programming when I've got my first computer, an Atari 600XL (what a pos for 1992). I learnt BASIC from a collection of science magazines from the 80s that my older brothers had and from an Atari BASIC manual.

Unfortunately I never had a diskette drive nor some assembler books :(

Edit: I was 8.

Re:Poll: Is HN your main online news source? on Wednesday December 29, 2010 @11:42AM (#2049218)
Something Awful is my main news source.

Being serious, Hacker News shouldn't try to be a general news site "for hackers" because believing a hacker prototype exists is absurd.

Re:The Startup Diet (Lost 15 lbs while at an Incubator) on Wednesday October 27, 2010 @12:10AM (#1837215)
Using lettuce instead of tortillas is brilliant! Tortillas account for a big chunk of the costs in a wrap.

Re:The PlayStation Phone on Tuesday October 26, 2010 @11:33PM (#1837131)
Only if Sony doesn't do a thing to lock the software up. Maybe they could add SPUs to the phone, or something that would lock the software to the platform.
Re:Firebug Metamorphosis on Tuesday October 26, 2010 @11:27PM (#1837111)
Has someone looked at the Web Console features ?https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Using_the_Web_Console

It is just a simple console like Firebug Lite. Even the site says "The Web Console won't replace more advanced debugging tools like Firebug", so why is the Firebug team so worried about it?

Firebug is a great tool for Mozilla browsers and I feel that considering porting Firebug to other browsers could be a difficult goal for the project.

Re:Linux: Understanding File Descriptors and IO Redirection on Thursday August 26, 2010 @02:55AM (#1635288)
Unix scripting always amazes me. Every time I read a script or a blog post about it I learn something new.

After all these years using Linux, I don't remember ever noticing input redirection.

Re:Why is there not a Square Root button in calc.exe? on Saturday August 21, 2010 @05:32PM (#1623708)
I've used cheap scientific calculators that perform operations from left to right. It's awful when you are answering a uni exam and you don't know why the results you get looks fishy.

On computer calculators, I always type "1 + 2 * 3 =" as "2 * 3 =", "+ 1 =" because I learned the hard way that I can't asume that a calculator is going to respect order of precedence or not.

Re:Startup Chile - $40k grants available on Friday August 20, 2010 @07:33PM (#1621903)
Bummer, it's only for people that live abroad.
I'm considering integrating their service. Using ffmpeg can be a bitch when you have to deal with many combinations of input codecs.

How does it run when you send a request with hundreds of jobs? They autoscale so there is little waiting time on queues, but I don't get if that means if the scaling is per job or per user.

Re:Australia gets its own Y Combinator-type fund on Thursday August 19, 2010 @04:40AM (#1616834)
Kudos to the aussies for having something similar to YC. The mentorship from TWENTY (woah!) successful founders, the $25.000 (aus?) sound amazing.

What I find it really sad that even in this decade the best way for a web startup to get attention is to go to the Valley. If the web is global shouldn't the support networks be global too?

In the case of my country (Chile) it is very difficult to make your own web startup. Seed investment is centralized in a goverment organization that only cares about patents and how many millions of dollars you are going to make in the first years. Another problem with seed investment around here is that you must spend the money in very specific things like getting incorporated (which is expensive) and build a business plan $$, not getting the work done. It you aren't sure how you are going to monetize your app in a way that is going to give you massive profits, don't bother trying to get an investor (unless you have rich relatives).

Is Australia similar to my country in that innovating on the web is very difficult from a support ecosystem perspective?

Re:Ubuntu 11.04 is going to be named the Natty Narwhal on Wednesday August 18, 2010 @01:18AM (#1613325)
IMO it's just better to stick to LTS releases, Canonical tends to make less experimental changes in those releases, because things should work for 3 years. In the other hand, on post LTS releases like 10.10 (which is a x.10 release) they have more freedom to do more under the hood changes.
Re:Google Wave: too complicated for its own good on Thursday October 15, 2009 @12:06AM (#882751)
Yeah maybe if they dumb it down a little to be more similar to Gmail it would really catch on.
