Reminds me of this research: https://kclpure.kcl.ac.uk/portal/en/publications/enrichment-... Amazing how far we managed to get in less than 3 years!
they could still calculate their profit margin: cost to build all their free SDK / profit from app store. Seems quite simple. Why would you believe them that they are not able to perform this calculation?
Migrations have to be backwards compatible so the DB schema can serve both versions of the app. It's an extra price to pay for having ZDD or rolling deployments and something to keep in mind. But it's generally done by all the larger companies
Re:Half-Ass It on Friday May 31, 2024 @07:59AM (#40533956)
I think the author was trying to point out that one way to triage or to identify what actually are the essential requirements is to half-ass it and see the results.

It's okay to skip the typing. The video has 25 seconds of which 16seconds are someone typing a question.
the answer is in the article
The press release somehow forgot to touch the core of the fine: apple customers paid higher subscription fee for apple music than they would for Spotify because it's against app store policy to inform that Spotify has a cheaper subscription if they don't want to pay apple 30% cut...

“Garry Tan is right!” the letter sent to Peskin, Preston and, perhaps, others read. “I wish a slow and painful death for you and your loved ones.” Bizarrely, the letter to Preston and Peskin concluded: “This mail was sent to communicate a political opinion. No threats were intended.”

Re:Real-Time Latent Consistency Model on Monday October 30, 2023 @02:49PM (#38073932)
impressive progress, although it's still not real time enough and the frames change too much to be considered smooth.
Very excited about the AI stats: 7B model running 30 tokens/ second, 13B+ parameters running on device, first token in 2.2sec. It seems we'll have more powerful AI models running on devices soon.

Well, well, well. How the turntables...
doesn't have to be free but with every increase there will be less research that can afford to pay for the data and with the proposed pricing of $500.000 for 0.3% of tweets it seems that no-one will be willing to pay the price
doesn't have to be neat chart but you kinda quantified one side: 99% of people will be hugely inconvenienced by weakened security. Now the question is how much child suffering is worth to inconvenient 99% of people? Let's say it would be 1 child that could be saved would you say it's worth the inconvenience? What if it's 2,10,100,1000? I am genuinely curious where would you draw the line (And that line is your neat chart with numbers)?
I disagree that it will be nothing. It will be something larger than 0. First question is how to predict the impact. But more interestingly when we have the impact analysis how to quantify the suffering that will be reduced in comparison with reducing security and how to quantify even that and put these into comparison. (Again I am not on either side just pointing how hard it is to quantify these things)
That's a very good question: how to quantify child suffering to one of the worst crimes imaginable? I am not saying I am for or against. I am just trying to point how really difficult is to quantify both sides of the equation.
Re:How to Beat Russia [pdf] on Wednesday March 08, 2023 @10:49AM (#35070455)
I disagree because russia showed it's very weak militarily. So weak that it caught by surprise everyone. Again we have the opposite problem and that's for Ukraine not winning too fast and that's why NATO is suppling weapons very carefully and slowly. You said that we're pushing boundaries but I see it as pushing boundaries centimeter by centimeter while being miles away from what you call a larger war. So in conclusion there won't be much larger war simply because there is no larger enemy.
