Re:Line Scan Photos from MUNI Heritage Weekend in San Francisco on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @02:14PM (#49805726)
every weekend is muni heritage weekend while they continue to operate the F as a museum
unbelievable amount of coarse graining to get from a real fly to this. same leve of ethical quandary as giving your dog a stuffed bear to tear apart. besides, you should see the things we do to real flies...
cursor input get scripted into loom input to the LC4s which are evidently simulated faithfully enough to drive giant fibers, which is actually how fly escape behavior works. what more could you want
both to facilitate flying junctions

the better question is why does gradient descent work for them

Re:3.4M Solar Panels on Wednesday April 22, 2026 @11:30PM (#47871998)
or we could build like 200 more fission plants and rewild all that ethanol land. not really a compelling point in favor of solar land use this factoid...

ok sure but are humans a full decade of NSF budget better than robots

a good mission burrito is like $10 and makes my life better

yes the US is laughably corrupt
Re:CATL Expects Oceanic Electric Ships in 3 Years on Monday December 08, 2025 @01:12AM (#46188959)
certainly there exist nuclear ships with enough power but I fail to see how you would feasibly tug a train of containerships
oops. yes. still not that much though. i mean it's a lot but it's "one more large industrialized country" a lot not "kardashev 2" a lot
Re:Using Antigravity for Statistical Physics in JavaScript on Sunday December 07, 2025 @07:35PM (#46186979)
> Is this not just a cellular automaton?

no

wiki article states "Up to 10,000 TWh/yr of power could be generated from OTEC without affecting the ocean's thermal structure". which converts to about 500GW which... isn't that much
they're in big concrete containers rated to withstand everything its fine
Re:Using Antigravity for Statistical Physics in JavaScript on Tuesday November 25, 2025 @02:54AM (#46043401)
this... is not very good for an hour? i would expect an undergrad to be able to cook this up in an hour
that seems fine
68 years ago we already had fission plants. the engineering side of energy production has been solved since then, it's all political now
Re: on Monday November 03, 2025 @11:06PM (#45807319)
ah yes, direct democracy in california has famously never led to anything bad happening.
farming requires a _lot_ of water.
Re:NORAD's Cheyenne Mountain Combat Center, C.1966 on Monday October 27, 2025 @02:11AM (#45717884)
the movie would be over after 10 minutes if GBI intercepted why would you assume this is an accurate depiction
Re:NORAD's Cheyenne Mountain Combat Center, C.1966 on Monday October 27, 2025 @02:09AM (#45717876)
not at all realistic, awful movie. somehow even worse than annie jacobsen's book. they would not fire only 2 interceptors, and there is no urgency to retaliate when it is not a decapitation strike
farming with desal water is insane. even with abundant power.
and there was a huge fire at the moss landing plant which left heavy metals and god knows what else raining down onto sensitive marine mammal habitat. kayak up elkhorn slough and you'll encounter dozens of otters, seals... less than a kilometer from the battery plant.

I don't think we're going to be appreciating the environmental consequences of that accident for years. heavy metals don't decay, they'll be there forever.

a pox on david brouwer and his faux environmentalism, and the politics and economic machinations that ever proposed solar and batteries as an alternate to baseload fission plants. (in fact brouwer did his damage long before solar was ever practical, so he has even less ground to stand on)

Re:Seattle Ultrasonics: Ultrasonic Chef's Knife on Saturday September 20, 2025 @08:48PM (#45319021)
if you have a nice knife and cut by dragging the knife towards you with tip in contact with the board instead of cutting directly down, food will not stick

HHMI is a private org
JILA is the golden child of the physics dept for reasons no one quite knows. Better facilities, higher stipends, separate events programming, same department!
