`cd` does not travel to an "absolute path". It changes the working directory for the specified drive. Your prompt will still show you the old path (at A:), because you've not changed the folder for the current working drive, which yes, is kind of an insane concept.

If you want to actually change the working directory and drive at the same time (which is the "absolute path" idea you have), you do `cd /d D:\whatever\`.

Developing an alternative to a thing because you're fed up with the thing (and have specific painpoints you want adressed) is a perfectly reasonable course of action. But I'll agree that the whole "recommend to customers" angle is weird and probably shouldn't be in the post.
As true as that can get, it still beats not having internet access at all. And I mean, my users are happy enough with it so w/e.

Re:Xbox continues its "reset" with dramatic restructuring on Thursday September 24, 2026 @04:29PM (#49836377)
"Giving Microsoft control" is a strange idea. If you are a DOS/Windows user (and to a large extent even if you aren't), then Microsoft was in control of the PC since the platform's inception and this doesn't change anything. Helix is a PC. Running an x86_64 CPU. It runs Windows (with some extra fluff that runs on boot), and someone will put some Linux or other on it eventually.

When I was talking about backtracking, I meant doing so before the release of the project, which would be reputation damage with no profit. And if it's out, as specified, then there's not really any backtracking to speak of anymore.

Re:Xbox continues its "reset" with dramatic restructuring on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @12:48PM (#49818924)
I'm not sure what the point of vibe reading is when the announcement[1] is right there and explicitly calls out third party store support, being able to play "your PC games", and the fact that the device will run Windows. Could they backtrack on all this? Maybe, but it seems a bit too late for that.

The only thing I'm not certain of is the exact shape of the "exit button". It could be a "desktop app" like Windows 8 had, instead. Could be some way to add third party games to the Xbox launcher UI. Barely relevant, anyway.

Re:Xbox continues its "reset" with dramatic restructuring on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @03:22PM (#49806740)
As far as I'm aware so far, the plan is to have Windows boot into "Xbox mode", like the Steam Deck boots into "big picture". And have an exit button to get a normal desktop and other stores/games.

Basically just trying to challenge Valve on the scale of Microsoft's access to hardware and undercutting their price while doing the same thing with a different default store. Also compatibility with actual Xbox games, which won't be a thing on the steam deck.

Re:Xbox continues its "reset" with dramatic restructuring on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @01:17PM (#49804752)
What you described with the "might as well give up" is literally the idea behind Project Helix. It's a PC branded as Xbox with some compatibility layers glued in.

Xbox now is a game studio, not a console manufacturer. Look at them through that lens. Doom, Halo, Overwatch, Fallout, whatever else, whether you are into them or not, they own a lot of franchises and those are their core now.

Re:Google Rolls Out $899-Plus 'Ai laptops' on Monday September 21, 2026 @04:44PM (#49793124)
This confounds me to no end. I wonder what the point of this is. Chromebooks I get, they're cheap, and they're for people who just need the basics, just a Laptop-Shaped Phone. This is just... that... but expensive, for no additional advantages -- you may have stuffed it with more powerful hardware but it still runs some skin on top of what is essentially Android, which neither needs that power nor benefits from it very much. What are you doing, Google? I get you're scared of the Neo but this ain't any sort of an answer.
So you're saying that giving feedback tells them what you gave feedback on.

Which, yeah?? Feedback is entirely useless otherwise.

Re:We are unconsciously becoming someone else on Sunday September 20, 2026 @02:43PM (#49778675)
To be clear, I wasn't accusing you of doing anything wrong. Cheap trick or not, it works. If you don't feel you need it, that's good too.

I figured the typos are intentional to indicate "not written by AI", because how the hell do you end up with "bdw"?
Re:Be alert: targeted attacks on prominent Rustaceans on Friday September 18, 2026 @06:35AM (#49752423)
I recognize the intent, I've seen where the article is posted. It still feels a bit strange to misrepresent the scope of what's going on and artificially limit it to just "prominent Rust community members". I don't see how this aids anything, if anything it's more likely that someone will ignore the warning now because of this presentation.
Re:Be alert: targeted attacks on prominent Rustaceans on Thursday September 17, 2026 @03:02PM (#49745076)
Bit of a strange article. This is neither targeted nor limited to Rust, we've seen reports here of this happening over at Ruby and Node lately just as well, and I'm sure other ecosystems are also being attacked, just without as much noise.
Completely useless, of course (this is just a folder of shortcuts effectively), but adorable nonetheless.
The way dude treats his children they'll all be fighting against him, so... Hey, go for it.
Re:Ask HN: Laptop or Desktop? on Monday September 07, 2026 @07:09PM (#49603979)
Have two laptops. A light one (surface pro) I carry with me and a heavy one (a "gaming"-branded thing from 4 years ago) that stays at home pretty much all the time. That second one moves homes with me when I do, which isn't often but still makes a desktop too unwieldy. I see no meaningful performance advantage in desktops for my use cases either.

Alright, I have since experimented with the other harnesses mentioned in this thread (AI Edge and PocketPal) and both run the same models much, much faster. Gemma 4 E2B is extremely usable, Qwen simply flies. Same device. I don't know what you are doing, but it's clearly not great...
The claim that these models "run on almost any phone" as well as the in-app indicator of performance that says it may "run comfortably" are some serious exaggeration. Tried running Qwen 0.5B on mine [1]. It took five minutes to produce "I am a large language model created by Anthropic" (lmao) and then stopped outputting anything at all. I am not expecting you to somehow make the models perform better or whatnot, I just believe that the performance claims need review.

Re:Disrupting a new covert influence campaign from Russia on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @07:05AM (#49446907)
Seems pretty normal to me. Your first sentence is taken from the abstract, a short summary of the article as a whole, so details are excluded or glossed over. Your second sentence is from a section titled "Actor", which goes into actual detail on who the actors were and so has more fluff like this. They go on to explain their reasoning in that section -- you can't actually create an account from Russia itself, but a VPN can be used to bypass the block, which lends some uncertainty. They then proceed to systematically eliminate that uncertainty by showing how the accounts were acting.
Re:Disrupting a new covert influence campaign from Russia on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @05:22AM (#49446105)
In the quote provided in the article, it's used as a noun: "unhackneyed perspective on hazzy". And literally the only thing I can think of is the acronym "hz", which is a rough equivalent of the English "idfk". Like someone prompted the bot to tell them the channel gives a perspective on "something, I don't know what". But even this is a stretch of stretches.
Re:Disrupting a new covert influence campaign from Russia on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @04:33AM (#49445686)
Even as a speaker of the language I haven't a single bloody clue what a "hazzy" is. Is ChatGPT normally this bad at being prompted in one language to generate text in another, or is this an operator fuckup, I wonder?
It's a paywall. The text is supposed to have a blur over it so it's not readable, and it's "smart" to use fake text for something like this. I guess the blur didn't render for you?
What a truly bizarre article. Arguments about pre-existing randomness, temperature and whatnot aside, I simply cannot comprehend what the author here really thinks the "best word" is. There's no such thing. We humans fall on familiar patterns of writing ourselves, so we may forego something with a flourish in favor of a more commonly-used word unless we put in effort to be "special", which should be used sparingly. That is to say, human writers are likely to choose a "worse" word in far more than the supposed 51% of cases, and that has no effect on the actual quality of writing in the end.

But even if there were such a thing as a truly "best word", for some context, what are the examples here? Mango vs pineapple? Gray vs overcast? In what case is one of these better, that AI would normally infer but would suddenly be "perverted" by SynthID? Do you think your emotional state and preferences are being evaluated if they aren't explicitly in memory? And if they are there, do you think that the generator will bypass those instructions in favor of the watermark instead of placing it somewhere you won't care? I just. Genuinely don't get it. There may be words that matter in specific contexts or to you as a reader, so you should bloody well put them there.

Re:A Gallery of Installing from .dmg on Friday August 07, 2026 @03:01PM (#49214888)
The images are pretty, but good lord what horrendous UX. Why are they still stuck with this? Also -- why would someone else be allowed to tweak a user's file manager settings? Insane.
"Anthropic says it's bad at making harnesses" doesn't have quite the same ring to it, I guess.
Re:Better to Beg Forgiveness on Friday July 31, 2026 @11:05AM (#49124082)
The first definition of this phrase per Merriam-Webster is "to gloss over, explain away, or patch up (differences, disparities, etc.) especially in order to maintain a semblance of unity or agreement". I was also not familiar with it until I went to look.
