Re:Way to Play Super Mario 64: On Apple Vision Pro on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:44AM (#50180853)
I made something similar for the NES and Hololens, though much less functional as the Hololens didn't support the Xbox controller at the time, and the FOV was very narrow. Some MS employees added controller support during a hackathon, which was cool to see.

I've been thinking about how to port and remaster retro games for a decade now and AI RE/decomp has blown all of my ideas out of the water. Exciting times for gamers (or anyone else who has used published binaries ie Photoshop), despite my other misgivings about generative AI.

Pretty big ask to have people just jump in. An itch.io style page would be nice for a preview.

Yes. That is a twelve-year-olds idea of a smart idea.

RE: that Neil O'Brien piece

Demographic collapse? Sure, huge issue. But why is this happening? Why did it start happening before the other issues?

A rap group being critical of Churchill at an official event? Not really an issue. I don't think that is why Britain is failing. And I'll need citations for why moral introspection is demoralizing rather than uplifting and enlightening for a culture. Or maybe suggest something that the youth should feel good about rather than browbeating them for not being thrilled at the state of things.

Immigration? Not an issue for the USA after the great depression, which also had a massive welfare state.

I agree that Britain is collapsing, but not for those reasons. What a stunning lack of imagination.

IMO That example is way too complicated to be an elevator pitch. I'm trying to understand what working with your framework would be like for a web app, not the boilerplate to establish rules and state management of a small game.

The tutorial has a much better Hello World + incremental feature introduction, I'd put some of that before the larger example.

I worked on USAID software for reporting costs and results and there were annual and quarterly briefings IIRC. It was kind of a whole thing.

Also, Congress codified it as an independent agency in 1998. So.. that last part isn't true either. This stuff isn't hard to look up.

The placement of the monitor is also odd, doubly so because it is curved. Most sims will let you render offset from the driver seat (iRacing has keyboard shortcuts to make all these adjustments easily) but the image is being rendered from a "first person" projection a foot to your side. The monitor being tilted isn't ideal either.

If using an actual chassis the best way to go would be with a projector mounted as low as it can be to clear the top of the car, ideally onto a screen that is curved out from the driver's perspective.

I also have an LLC for software and didn't love having to put my address, since I don't have a storefront or anything either, but I don't think it reveals any more info than someone could find from having your name in the first place.
Re:Show HN: Pages CMS – A CMS for GitHub on Thursday February 22, 2024 @10:42AM (#39468734)
What the hell is going on with the little sentences in that example? I thought it was supposed to be like, a bad VC rap joke song or something? I was looking for rhymes. It's really lame.
Clue (1985) had several different endings sent to different theaters, which as a comedy was a pretty funny and novel idea. The VHS release contained all of them at the end with title cards to explain why.

If this doc is screening in theaters I'd imagining different reels/files are sent to different theaters, or maybe more than one so they can rotate them.

As others have said DVDs are more than capable of this. A VLC plugin could work, and Netflix has some type of tech for their choose-your-own-adventure episode of Black Mirror for streaming.

Re:I used to not worry about climate change. Now I do on Sunday January 28, 2024 @09:33AM (#39166129)
There's a narcissism that lends to every generation thinking theirs is the end of history, but I don't think it entirely explains anxiety over climate change.
Re:Should You Be Scared of Unix Signals? on Monday October 16, 2023 @07:52PM (#37908278)
That sort of sounds like the solution I was thinking of when reading this.. that handlers should only cache the signal received to be handled at the program's convenience, except for a kill signal etc.
Re:What SWE job hunting is like right now on Saturday October 14, 2023 @12:55PM (#37882115)
I sent out plenty of resumes with nice cover letters to jobs I felt overqualified for over the 4 months I was just looking, and had maybe one response.. from a recruiter.

But I worked with a recruiter for a few of those months and they got me to a few final rounds. I think having a proper recruiter, who knows the hiring manager, is pretty powerful. Them shaving whatever % of the top is lame but it's better than being unemployed.

Re:What SWE job hunting is like right now on Saturday October 14, 2023 @12:49PM (#37882049)
Making less money isn't a "loser mentality", for an SWE or anyone else. I'd happily take something that paid less for good non-profit work etc (but those orgs have always been really rough for other reasons).

Also, 150k for 10 years is great if you're working in government or somewhere local in the midwest, you're still living like a king and probably super stable.

What I don't love about the OP is the crab bucket mentality, not that they don't make enough money themselves.

Re:What SWE job hunting is like right now on Saturday October 14, 2023 @12:45PM (#37882024)
The market is the market, for better or worse. I do think SWE are overvalued socially/monetarily, but I don't see why you're so emotional over someone saying they deserve what they can get. Or if they make more than you if they can swing it.
Re:What SWE job hunting is like right now on Saturday October 14, 2023 @12:40PM (#37881955)
$180k within four years is more than reasonable if you get into FAANG. I've had plenty of kids right out of college asking for $140k and getting it from other companies, and this was 5 years ago, so within four years of typical ZIRP job hoping I'd say that's relatively normal.

Please don't assume anyone is hired for diversity reasons. That's really awful.

Re:Return to Office Is Bullshit and Everyone Knows It on Monday October 02, 2023 @11:56AM (#37739815)
That's totally valid, also. I do sometimes miss the office, particularly from when I worked in a healthy office culture, but would want it to be optional.
Re:LARPing and Violent Extremism on Sunday September 24, 2023 @07:58PM (#37638302)
As someone who lived in Northern Virginia for a bit and knew some reenactors, I heard some interesting stories about how many issues it caused during the DC Sniper attacks https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.C._sniper_attacks. Lotsa 911 calls when they would start firing, it took a while for them to be able to ease back into it.

Tangential, but still an interesting intersection of law enforcement vs free expression. Thankfully I think that all parties just politely agreed they should just stop while the suspects were still active and at large.

That's fascinating, thanks. None of the various analysis I've read so far have hit on this point but it makes sense.
Bingo re: Unity going public. Once you have a stock price (and assuming your early investors aren't the most aggressive type in the first place) the goal then shifts to infinite growth, and lately tech companies (even Google Netflix etc) have had to make user-unfriendly decisions to justify ever growing valuations in the face of rate hikes. Unity isn't the first, but it has maybe done it the worst.

One of the "analysis" threads by a VC on Twitter mentioned the engine not making as much money as the ad business as "unsustainable". But it's the same nonsense Musk spouted with Twitter not being sustainable or "making a profit" -- it made a profit but not given the market realities deliberately hoisted upon it.

Re:RetroAchievements: Adding Achievements to Retro Games on Tuesday September 12, 2023 @02:34PM (#37485536)
This is great. I was making a 3D NES emulator years ago, which just dug into the PPU memory (plus some register hooks during frames) to figure out what was being rendered (old archived explainer here https://web.archive.org/web/20160820051951/http://n3s.io/ind...). I then wound up having to add some simple scripting so contributors could determine if, for example, the sprite being rendered was the cloud or bush in the original Super Mario Bros (since both used the same sprite, just palette-swapped).

It eventually got me thinking that I should try to standardize some sort of layers over Retroarch cores, which could interpret (RAM or GPU) memory values, value updates, and function calls as values and events to consume in some other application. My thought was that if someone used those hooks to create a "wrapper" for something like Contra for the NES then you could, say, handle rendering and audio from Unreal or Unity. So.. super HD remakes, reinterpretations, or art projects. Maybe play the original Final Fantasy and have twitch chat affect damage and other values.

But then I got distracted, as usual :| But it is weird to see something like it in the wild now. I hadn't considered achievements.

Early JS state management was horrific, yeah, but modern libraries (while a little hard to wrap your mind around initially) are really powerful.
Re:Most cancer screenings don’t extend life, study finds on Monday August 28, 2023 @01:30PM (#37297596)
I agree with your meta-analysis-analysis completely. Just chiming in to say that I chuckled when you reminded me of this classic: https://twitter.com/dril/status/464802196060917762?lang=en
Nothing! Quite the opposite. You've avoided the typical modern meat grinder approach to hiring devs. If you've been at the same company for 5-6 years or just slotted into a comfy niche then you'll have avoided it. Congrats
Re:Rethinking Window Management in Gnome on Wednesday July 26, 2023 @01:08PM (#36881106)
I like the idea of an initiative for applications to provide metadata for any window manager to handle them more intelligently. Letting the user quickly fill in the gaps in the meantime for local applications would also be nice.

I've played with super detailed Unux WMs (bspwm?) and I've also started using Powertoys FancyZones on Windows and in both cases it's a lot of setup that only works ideally for rather specific situations.

Re:In Support of Richard Stallman on Thursday April 13, 2023 @11:19AM (#35556817)
From https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2021/03/richard-stallman...:

> "I have an announcement to make," Stallman said at the FSF's LibrePlanet conference. "I'm now on the Free Software Foundation board of directors once again... Some of you will be happy at this and some might be disappointed, but who knows. In any case, that's how it is. And I'm not planning to resign a second time."

I get that not everyone is perfectly well rounded but how do you fail at messaging this poorly? "...some might be disappointed, but who knows. In any case, that's how it is." Just a giant middle finger.

I'm sure plenty of Stallman-types will say everyone is not being generous enough or that cancel culture is going too far, but your job on the board of a foundation is implicitly a social one and if you can't not piss off 90% of the people around you then you are still bad at your job and unfit for it.

Re:Show HN: Programming language for making NES games on Tuesday March 07, 2023 @03:46PM (#35060977)
I strongly agree on the last point about early validation, albeit with two exceptions: when you're marketing a product you want to sell and want to generate hype, or your product requires early feedback. I've kept things hidden to keep myself motivated only to find I was left with the horribly unmotivating task of shudders marketing. Also, my friends who I thought would love it had fundamental changes they'd want to find it useful.

Yeah, my last gig had high turnover (not a coincidence with the dysfunction) and it made it particularly apparent that the estimates were a waste of time, but we kept on trucking.
