Re:How I got my username on nearly every site on Thursday July 18, 2019 @09:42AM (#20469653)
There was no activity on the package for 3 months when I wrote this! By his logic, that would qualify for someone else to take over the account if they like the username.

Someone please take over this dormant account: https://www.npmjs.com/~edent

The majority of npm based installation instructions I encounter "out there" are using "npm install -g".
Re:Hey advertisers, track this on Wednesday June 26, 2019 @07:49AM (#20284013)
We suffer that garbage not because people like you and me did not think of _money_ as reward for other people's projects but because of advertising, tracking and click counts.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with publishing things for free, doing things for free and consuming things for free. The best content on the web is done by people from their own interest in sharing. Personal contacts, exchange of information, feedback and community are so much more worth than money when it comes to motivating the production of good things.

And how would you find out if that question has been answered before? That would only work if there was single unified centralised question site. And then we are pretty much back at Google's single search field.
> What Google's doing is harder and more nuanced -- they want to accurately capture the world as it exists around you right now.

I challenge that. I do not believe it is true. Google wants to be the go-to directory for spatial queries so that they can display their ads and make tons of money. The quality of the data is irrelevant after a certain level, as long as there is no viable alternative or people just blindly trust Google. Google Maps' data is quantity over quality by a wide margin.

Re:In the 1820s, a new kind of lens saved ships on Friday June 21, 2019 @07:52AM (#20241637)
That does not work at all and just confused me. The angles must change on the interrupted parts to follow the general curve of the lens' surface.

I heard they did that in Texas.
Re:Good Quality DOSBox Video Capture and FFmpeg Options on Monday June 17, 2019 @10:39AM (#20203424)
I recommend "-tune animation" for content like this.

Also I second izacus' "don't use baseline". I would even use a higher profile, for quality's sake. For bad clients you would always convert content if needed. Unless of course, you are one of those users constrained by them in the first place.

And if you don't want depressing violence and sadness, use any other radio like audio. I recommend Apollo 11 radio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DejhGSEu8wk
That does not make any sense. If it is memory intensive depends on awk, not on the person being familiar with it.

Sois it memory intensive or not?

If you even have to use such rhetoric, at least get it right. These people were invited by the US company Jeunesse Global. Says so in your link.
Done!
Re:Olive: A free non-linear video editor on Wednesday May 22, 2019 @03:34PM (#19984655)
What does it make "professional"? I would expect zero crashes from that, as compared to any other "non-professional" open-source video editor I used so far.
Just today I thought how much I appreciate that exact setup and that I should donate considerable money to the project.

So hereby I pledge that I will send 100 dollars this weekend. This is not even 2 dollars per months that this project provided me with a perfect portable media player setup.

Who's with me?

OP's history https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=cookingoils seems like a SEO(?) spammer to me.
It's a cheap and hand-wavy, yet titled impressively piece made by an artist so don't expect anything too sophisticated ;)
> Serious question: did anything good come out of paying attention to Twitter? Like, ever? I'm sure it has its bubble-living adherents here. Then again, so did Quora.

You weren't serious, "like, ever" is obvious false. Of course there are good things.

For me: Tech support both ways, job offers, knowledge of latest releases and new developments in my area of expertise. It's awesome.

The psychological feedback loops and self-affirmation have been tweaked to perversion and addiction by social media. There are notifications, +1, heart, subreferences, everything, everywhere. It has become much more overwhelming.
Re:How healthy is the internet? on Thursday April 25, 2019 @05:27AM (#19746388)
A opinionated, non-technological, political, negative and very social justice-ish compilation of:

- Is it safe? The internet is where we could live, love, learn and communicate freely. To be ourselves, we need to be able to trust the systems that protect us.

- How open is it? The internet is transformative because it is open: everyone can participate and innovate. But openness is not guaranteed – it’s always under attack.

- Who is welcome? It’s not just about how many people have access to the internet, but whether that access is safe and meaningful for all of us.

- Who can succeed? Getting online isn’t enough on its own. Everyone needs skills to read, write and participate in the digital world.

- Who controls it? A few large players dominate much of the online world, but the internet is healthier when it is controlled by many.

Well, this is about density maps unless I overlooked something?
Re:Creating Heatmap from Scratch in Python (2018) on Thursday April 18, 2019 @09:48AM (#19690952)
Please be aware that you MUST NOT use this for geographic coordinates such as "GPS" or "WGS84" latitude & longitude pairs. Depending on the longitude areas are of different sizes. You must use code that knows about that or your results will be utterly wrong.

Maybe their experiences or observations with "VC backed startup[s] that [sell] a SaaS product" has shown them again and again that you cannot trust those in any way to be even around for 2 years.

You mean Bouman?
