Please don’t be demeaning and dismissive at HN. You’ve made your point about the low odds (currently zero) and I’ve made my point that I don’t think that’s a safe gamble to take. I genuinely do wish y’all luck — fighting for the right to repurpose devices is a steady thread throughout my comment history re: attestation for the past five years, and I think Nintendo is quite likely to lose in court over blocking online access by a device now that they sell download-only game cartridges. Insulting me for disagreeing, for not taking a gamble against a draconian EULA as a Switch 2 owner, is inappropriate. You could have asked my motivations (I’m retired and in school, so dollars aren’t flowing like they used to) if you wished to challenge me further, and you’re certainly not new here: do better next time.
Though, now that I think about it, I wouldn’t be surprised if PayPal bought them in a couple years: the business is just another variation of flea market business model (such as eBay and Amazon Marketplace, but PayPal’s tolerance for liability and bad press is much higher than Amazon’s), and capturing that worldwide reservation revenue while outsourcing all of the actual hard work of physical operations (just as eBay does) would be an appropriate diversification.
Reddit absorbed a large portion of the former webforum audience, and is unusually focused on maintaining human contributions as the primary dataset for visitors, so people get sucked into the convenience trap of not having to host a phpBB or wiki, to solve the discovery problem, and to solve the AI scraper problem.
> my LLM uses their data without me having to deal with their anti-patterns
Do you believe that Reddit is largely failing to prevent LLM usage of current/timely Reddit content, replacing direct app/website usage such as in your case, by a significant (20% or more) portion of their active posting userbase? I would wonder if 20% of their userbase is even able to run their own LLM at all, which leads me to consider that your use case is quite rare — and may explicitly be one Reddit wishes to see evicted.
(If you were referring to people who use LLMs that pay Reddit for access, then Reddit’s already made their money and any cheapening of the site’s value to a hobbyist is irrelevant versus the value of any amount of human-generated content to their LLM customers.)
I have a great deal of sympathy for them refusing to engage; decisive software creators are far less palatable to an entitled swarm of disagreement, and that same decisiveness is what makes the best software. Perhaps in U.S. culture, refusal with a smile and a reassurance that “We’re Listening” is something folks feel entitled to, but in other areas of the world, demanding a stranger change their mind once it’s made up earns only mockery or pity. To those cultures, this GitHub is a comedy-farce, and I laughed out loud upon reading it — not because I necessarily agree with the project’s decision, but because I agree culturally with their tone and handling of what some view as blatant immaturity: a final flat refusal, closing the door, and getting back to work.
I at one point had {COMMO} custom auto-scripts set up to dial scan all 300 local BBSes each night, auto-login and grab their QWKmail packets, and then drop into Blue Wave so I could read through all the forums whenever I eventually woke up with key imprints on my forehead while waiting for the dialer. Best forums experience ever, lifetime to date.
QWK mail was what RSS could have become if phpBB had implemented two-way messaging over RSS rather than one-way: you download the RSS forums packet and then you upload your RSS replies packet, and use a reader app to track all your forums so that you can work through your reading and writing queue while offline and it all just worked, no drama and only 1 GET and 1 POST necessary per site per day to stay connected to all of them :)

(I have no specific position on this point but I know some small fraction of HN needs to avoid such things now and then, so duly noted.)
The argument that ‘the illegality of AI-generated CSAM would therefore apply to all AI-generated illegality and thus is undue harm upon non-CSAM contexts’ is constructed on the basis that ‘A therefore B’ implies ‘B therefore A’, which is untrue here as detailed above. If you have a better argument in defense of the right to generate CSAM, I recommend a refresher on obscenity laws, how they vary per country, and why they cannot be reduced so simply to ‘CSAM, therefore non-CSAM’; that’s not how it works, no matter how unpalatable or displeasing the one-way discontinuities of CSAM law may be.
That’s neither a CSAM-context nor a CSAM-adjacent question as presented, and so is ineligible for the CSAM-context “carve-out” discussions of this post and thread.
However, your question is a boringly incompetent attempt to inflame my emotions in order to trigger illogical responses meant to weaken the impact of my dissection and analysis of this discussion — a particularly ineffective strategy against this high-functioning sociopath. Please don’t use conversational warfare tactics on HN.
