I've been on the projector train for many years. In addition to their being awesome for the home theater experience (they're not for everyone or every environment), I've yet to read about a manufacturer engaging in the bs happening on TVs.
I have a treat for you. A book on the history and development of the English language:

Just wait until they rewrite Swift with Rust.
We’ll be reading about the crimes of dodge for years, similar to secrets of the CIA coming out in the 1970s. Wish politicians in US weren’t so spineless about going after them.

Can you please explain what this means? I have Ghostty installed just as a backup to use when I have terminal saturation in my default (MacOS Terminal). But other than being super responsive, I don’t know why people love it so. Perhaps I’m missing something large and compelling.

Cover is behaving horribly out in the open and having half of US politicians run cover for you by demonizing your detractors as anti-Semitic. The US has been shielding them for decades, though not exclusively. That time is waning.

Re:The new iPad mini on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @01:00AM (#50254861)
I always wondered why Windows users didn't notice the jagged text in 2001 and see a Mac as obviously better. You don't know what you aren't missing until it's gone.
What interesting timing. I'll be meeting with a friend to resume a collaboration tomorrow after an extended break. I decided to test your software against one of our tracks, with which I am, of course, intimately familiar. The quality of the output is pretty great.

I slowed to half and then three-quarters and I could see us using this creatively for some time-based effects (my mind is already combining it with traditionally plugins and hand-built signal chains to massage the output creatively). It'll take some work, but I think we might find uses for this by combining the DAW and the command line. Very nice!

Rarely am I so envious of another’s idea. This makes me jealous. I wish I’d thought of it, even though I’ve never used the original and I’d never use it after it became what it has become.

Read the first two quotes and responses. You weren’t as unambiguous as you think you were.
I ride BART. I'm two blocks from a busy transfer station. It's great for going to a show and getting home without driving (drunk).

Arguing that modern fare gates lowered crime is a pretty terrible response to the comment to which you responded. It shows a real lack of articulation ("crime bad, crime down here, therefore I don't need to refute what you said").

The original poster said:

> The guy that committed that murder wasn't going to be deterred by a ticket fee.

I don't see how lower crime on BART due to fewer people hopping the turnstiles refutes that at all. (Huh, I just learned turnstiles is spelled with an I and not a Y. At least your comment led to me learning something.) It just seems defeatist, which is what the people looting this country want.

Why shouldn't we have exactly the ambitions you're using as an argument against change? I support all of those proposals. The richest nation in history could do all of that easily if there was the will to do so.

If giving away free public services could be grifted to increase the bottom line of the ultra wealthy, we'd have a utopian society.

It's similar to the Iowa courthouse break-in by hired pentesters. They had a contract for the work and very small people in the place where it occurred wouldn't let go. This kind of behavior is shameful and should result in jail time for bad-faith prosecutions.

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:40AM (#50180801)
I will take a moment to remind everyone that the people who don’t care about our future argue in bad faith (because their voters are genuinely stupid):

> Cruz, R-Texas, said in a tweet late Wednesday that by returning America to the multinational climate accord, Biden has indicated that he is more interested "in the views of the citizens of Paris than in the jobs of the citizens of Pittsburgh."

Did he misunderstand? This is from an AI summary from Google, but I recall his education being roughly this well before AI was in my search results:

> Cruz attended Princeton University, graduating with a B.A. in public policy (cum laude) in 1992. He then attended Harvard Law School, earning his Juris Doctor (magna cum laude) in 1995, where he served as a primary editor of the Harvard Law Review.

He’s not stupid. Many of them are not stupid (Marjorie Taylor Greene genuinely is). They cynically manipulate the stupids to the detriment of us all. Must be cool to think heaven is about to make it not matter (rapture), meanwhile the whole population of the world is effed due to lying liars holding us back and stupid voters who probably can’t read at an eighth grade level.

Let me dust off this evergreen comment I use at times like this…

Re:Apple ML Research: Muse Spark Open with MLX on Mac Studio on Saturday October 17, 2026 @12:49PM (#50132679)
You know, that brings something to mind that I haven't seen mentioned (so far). If you wiped the machine, it has to rebuild all that "knowledge". Apple announced that they'd rebuild the Spotlight index with an update to 26 so that people upgrading to 27 could use the new AI features immediately. Maybe the timing rules this out, but keep in mind that the device could be running processes that will eventually expire / run only on new content. Could that be a factor?

I know a new phone or Mac bangs hard on indexing even pre-foundation models. I haven't set up a new device with 27, so I don't know how much that might have increased.

> Well this is a software issue,

> You don't know that for sure.

> all of the Macs out there run the same operating system,

Wrong. Lots of Mac users skipped the Liquid Glass OSes. I was one until I bought an M5 that came with it. In fact, I was two versions behind on my M1 because the one before Tahoe also offered nothing that I wanted.

> the same software.

This referring to third-party software (my interpretation) is also wrong. People have wildly different setups, at least among us nerds.

> This can't an issue of a defective Mac.

Again, you don't know that. But your comment later on about two models having said issue is concerning. That said, there's a high likelihood that you run the same software on each.

> I am right now using my M5, on low power mode on a flat surface and it's almost too hot to type on.

If that's the case, I begin to suspect that the physical sensitivity that you mentioned in a different comment is the source. If that's the case, I'm empathetic cause it'd really suck to have that reaction. I can only make my M1 hot enough to noticeably warm up (or get hot) when slamming the CPU / GPU. I would hate for it to feel that way to me during normal use and you have my genuine sympathy if that's your experience on a machine running at normal levels. And if that's it, then get an external kbd and mouse. Not an ideal solution, but it sounds like the best option. Not portable. I know. But I'm looking for solutions here and there may be some compromise needed.

Plus one for this tool. I've been using it for about eight months or so. Useful for keeping Backblaze and other daemons from taking over when they're supposed to be invisible.

> Unfortunately, this does nothing for services such as WindowServer which now often takes up 50-100% of a core just on its own.

WindowServer can be a real dog (Finder, too, if opening lots of windows with videos that can be previewed in QuickLook). Closing all of the open windows is inconvenient, but it solves the issue until they get built up again and stay open for an extended period of time. I hope they address this in the future; we'll see how a new CEO prioritizes software quality. I'm the most hopeful that I've been in five or more years given the change in leadership. Doesn't mean it'll happen.

> I have fibromyalgia and seem to be sensitive to hot keys; my Thinkpad regularly getting to hot to touch with even light usage is EXACTLY why I went and bought a MacBook one morning in '23.

That shouldn't happen on a machine built in 2023. Take it to an Apple Store (or third-party) and see if a repair tech agrees. I repaired laptops that overheated when I had that role. There was a debacle about thermal paste a decade and a half ago (maybe longer). If it's under AppleCare, you might be able to get it fixed at no extra charge. If not, I'm sorry that it'll cost money, but Apple offers a flat-rate repair for laptops. Maybe they'll say it's fine and it'll be frustrating, but it's worth exploring.

The perpetrator of the viral "you're stealing my house," "if I don't steal it someone else would steal it," video was purported to be an alleged sex offender who fled to Israel to escape charges.

> there are other jobs, you just don't want to do most of them

Try applying for those jobs when you have a history of high paying white collar jobs on your resume. You won't get called. I know this from firsthand experience.

If I manage people who collect trash, why would I hire the person who is clearly down on their luck, who will certainly jump at an opportunity for another white collar position, when I have lots of people to choose from who won't have other opportunities?

This is the best rationalization I've been able to find for why I got zero calls when I was, in effect, unemployable due to a years-long period of joblessness. Within one month of completing a temp job that was back in a white collar position, I had phone interviews and a job offer.

Re:Where is all the new, good software? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:16PM (#50078012)
It’s running locally on my machine. It’s the stuff that only I wanted for my particular needs. It’s the stuff that wouldn’t have been built otherwise because it wouldn’t have been worth the effort. I’m guessing this is true for a lot of people.

1. A frontend to MacOS Quicklook that gives me many additional playback controls.

2. A daemon that listens for messages on my LAN to add scheduled notifications to my preferred app launcher without cluttering my reminders.

3. An improved version of a tool I built to watch for specific streamers and capture the content compared to the one I created years ago. I wouldn’t have enhanced it beyond the version I had that was good enough.

4. A metadata inspector that I can invoke in the GUI with a hotkey focusing only on the stuff I’m interested in seeing.

5. A hotkey terminal launcher based on the color themes I have configured on my device so I can arrow through and choose in the moment.

etc, etc, etc…

They invited security researchers to inspect their implementation of Private Cloud Compute. I expect there’d be a news story worth a good amount of traffic if they said it and didn’t allow people to do so. That there has been no such story suggests that there hasn’t been scandal.

I wouldn’t have thought to check, so I greatly appreciate you mentioning this. Added to my feed in the category (literally) Nerd Blogs. I love history, so you’ve made my day.
> Deloitte Cyprus said it could not comment on the specific allegations because the documents were more than 20 years old and no longer accessible.

That's convenient.

Also, I received a similar response when inquiring about a financial account that had been overlooked (there are reasons, I'm not getting into it) for a couple of decades. "Can't help you. Too old for us to have records." Well, my records are printed documents. Why can't you tell me anything? Reminds me of when the USA government stole my money from a bank transfer claiming suspicion of whatever (my landlord had a Middle Eastern sounding name and it was the 2000s) and then said they had no record of it when I provided all the required documentation to recover it.

In both cases, unfortunately, I concluded that the odds are so stacked against me that I gave up. Convenient system if you're fabulously wealthy or a massive org (such as corporations and government).

I haven't either, but two things spring to mind (because I'm not OP). 1. Head trauma. 2. Adult onset diabetes.

It can probably happen.

Re:I paid people to try and follow my README on Monday October 12, 2026 @05:33AM (#50053721)
I just went and looked at the first equivalent documentation that I wrote to myself in 2009 explaining how to automate mounting disks via fstab. It's very complete. I was tripped up on documentation that I wrote to myself in the past year only a week ago because my understanding of *nix systems now causes blindspots when writing to future-me.
