Sure. Trump's an abhorrent human being but that doesn't stop me from respecting their gender identity.

I don't go around misgendering people I don't like because I don't like them. That's shit.

It's always interesting when people try to Solve Art.

Art is inherently subjective, and you have to accept that a lot of it just _sucks_.

It's up to you to curate your own taste, and you do that by trawling through the terrible art until you find something that you like.

Re:Leap Spins out of YC on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @02:41AM (#19083613)
There are a million and one online communities where men are welcome.

Let us have just this one, please?

Re:Leap Spins out of YC on Tuesday February 05, 2019 @02:40AM (#19083608)
Step off it, mate.

There is a correct answer: People who call themselves women are women. Simple as that.

You're not the arbiter of Gender.

Re:Boeing 787 Suffers Rare Dual Engine Failure on Landing on Wednesday January 30, 2019 @12:33PM (#19037200)
Modern turbofans are basically ducted fans spun by a smaller turbojet engine, so they are basically huge fans!
Re:Boeing 787 Suffers Rare Dual Engine Failure on Landing on Wednesday January 30, 2019 @12:32PM (#19037188)
"Sucking" doesn't actually generate any thrust - In highschool, my physics teacher did a demo with a T-shaped pipe with a fan in the middle, suspended from some string.

Without the T, the pipe moved as you'd expect. With the T directing the airflow in equal proportions perpendicular to the axis of the pipe, the pipe stayed still as if the fan wasn't on at all.

Re:Android vendors, don’t kill my app on Monday January 14, 2019 @08:05AM (#18902636)
Background App Refresh has been a thing for ages - It took them a while, but Apple solved this problem in a super user-friendly manner.
Re:I helped Google screw over James Damore on Tuesday January 08, 2019 @12:36PM (#18857480)
This reads like a creative writing exercise from the same people who were hurling violent abuse on social media at (ex-)SV people, mainly women and people of colour, who spoke out about abuse and similar attitudes they'd experienced in SV/tech in general.

Zero sources, zero verification: This isn't HN-level content.

Re:Complete guide to GDPR compliance on Tuesday January 08, 2019 @12:30PM (#18857408)
Hang on a sec, I'll move my EU-based company's entirely EU customer base as well as all of our EU citizen staff and EU-based suppliers... oh wait.
Re:Announcing unlimited free private repos on Monday January 07, 2019 @01:26PM (#18848250)
This makes me uncomfortable.

Private subscriptions were a direct revenue stream for Github, and explained directly how they can afford the infrastructure that provides the service.

Generally when previously paid stuff becomes free, it's because the paid service is no longer a product - it's now a tool to attract users. How will users be monetised now?

Re:Should We All Be Taking ‘Irony Poisoning’ More Seriously? on Saturday December 29, 2018 @10:46AM (#18784071)
This is a good article, but I think there is a lot more to be written on this subject.

I would really like to see a proper "long-read" exploration of what is a very real and under-acknowledged problem.

Re:Blender 2.8 on Monday December 24, 2018 @02:27PM (#18753802)
Not everything uses Semver (which is primarily aimed at software libraries). Blender's versioning scheme is consistent and reasonably well documented.
I hear this a lot, but I find Safari to be an entirely usable browser day-to-day - the reduction in power usage is very noticeable vs Firefox or Chrome.
"Do you want to meet them?" is perfectly acceptable. People seem to have no issues using it to refer to me, somebody who doesn't feel particularly at ease with referring to themself as either "him" or "her".

I'm not going to repeat myself - my opinions on that topic are recorded in the comments of the article about Richard Stallman's opinion of "singular they".

iPhone owner since the very first iPhone - I know ;)
Re:Questions to Ask Before Joining a Startup on Tuesday November 27, 2018 @06:12AM (#18541342)
> Cross-check with your friends how they feel about the company.

This is very important. I have a friend who took a job at a Mysterious Fintech Startup - he told our social circle in the pub and the entire table collectively groaned and encouraged him to find something more stable (red flags involved being paid pre-tax, etc).

They went bust a month later, a day after he decided jumped ship.

Which is one reason, among many, for YouTube to build a native application.
Re:US asks allies to avoid Huawei on Monday November 26, 2018 @10:38AM (#18534040)
Makes sense. The NSA can't backdoor the kit if China already have, right?

I understand it's oft more nuanced than this, but the comment about glass houses comes to mind.

Re:Visual Programming – Why It’s a Bad Idea on Wednesday November 21, 2018 @04:08AM (#18501226)
I say again; Don't be rude.

Especially don't be mean about other people's environments for the sake of being mean about their environments. Which is what you just did.

Re:Visual Programming – Why It’s a Bad Idea on Tuesday November 20, 2018 @01:17PM (#18496161)
Don't be rude.

LabVIEW is used in production in a lot of serious environments.

Re:Shamir’s Secret Sharing Scheme on Tuesday November 20, 2018 @01:16PM (#18496146)
It's an XKCD1053 event - Somebody discovered something that was new and interesting to them, and probably decided to share it knowing there are other people who also aren't yet aware.
Re:Shamir’s Secret Sharing Scheme on Tuesday November 20, 2018 @01:13PM (#18496103)
The only thing I remember about Secure Scuttlebutt is that it's anything but secure, but I can't for the life of me remember where I read it - can somebody jog my memory?
In an ideal world that'd be great, but for single-dev projects you can more effectively deliver features if you just pick a database and stick to it.

It's a shame it's MySQL (I'm in the Postgres camp these days) but MariaDB isn't awful and for such a tiny project it doesn't matter.

This is probably exactly what I've been looking for as a blogging platform.

Definitely giving this a go.

Bloody hell, mate - It's perfectly valid to highlight the fact that somebody's PoV may be biased based on their past contributions, there's no need to bring race into it.

They're just a car company.

Coal mining is a historic industry; we should not be pushing anybody into coal mining (Looking at you, Australia)

I’m assuming you picked coal mining because it’s an example of a dirty, dangerous position in an industry that’s rightfully stigmatised by most modern countries.

If you’re suggesting that we shouldn’t push women into dangerous jobs but it’s okay to push men into them, then I would counter that we should make dangerous jobs safer for everybody and no, there’s no fundamental reason that women should not have the opportunity to work in these industries.

Re:iPad Pro on Thursday November 01, 2018 @03:04PM (#18357301)
It charges quite happily off the 3W max which is standard on most non-power-delivery USB-C ports (inc Apple's, iirc)
Re:Stop using JWT for sessions (2016) on Thursday November 01, 2018 @03:02PM (#18357278)
Ruby dev here, Rails is pretty good at sessions. I hear the Python crowd have some great stuff too.
Re:Apple T2 Security Chip: Security Overview [pdf] on Wednesday October 31, 2018 @03:48AM (#18343953)
It’s no longer required; High Sierra and Mojave both officially support eGPUs.
Re:iPad Pro on Tuesday October 30, 2018 @11:30AM (#18337522)
I want to try and charge a MBP off the iPad Pro!
