Re:Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator on Wednesday April 02, 2025 @02:29PM (#43559788)
I don't think the person getting flagged is always deserving of the dogpile. Your comment implies "you should take this time in timeout to think about your actions" which is just a gentler form of rhetorical struggle sessions, and not always warranted.
Great, we've got a lot of statues to patch.

Walk in, 'user is on probation for this post'. Just like home :) Good luck with it
Re:Meta’s Push to Solve the Noisy Office on Thursday February 16, 2023 @11:10PM (#34830654)
At the beginning of work from home, I was confident that a lot of these big companies would maybe close a few locations but have coworking spaces available for those who prefer the office. You could have an amount of spaces spoken for, for people who need an anchored space, and you could have communal areas and open rooms with shutting doors for people who want to pop in and get a space.
Re:California's population dropped by 500k in 2 years on Thursday February 16, 2023 @11:06PM (#34830622)
I think as more people were able to work from home, they moved to areas that were cheaper as they no longer had to be near california.
Watson got layed off too? Ruthless.
0 of my commits are there, which is why I asked.

What's that question mark doing there in the title?

Can you still use LiLo these days on a systemd enabled system?

Hello, friend :)

I would not share water with this false emperor.
I think about the deepest parts of the ocean. If you want to be away from all potential for help, a truly alien biome, go deep.
I know, right? Evidently privilege just grows from trees back on Old Blue
> things are perhaps not going in the right direction

Just in general, a lot of things are headed this way, almost as if hubris and bliss compels and perpetuates it.

Finance does not exist in an idempotent vacuum
Re:Trying every combination to flash my Asus motherboard's BIOS on Thursday February 16, 2023 @12:46PM (#34822274)
In the Pentium 4 era, young-me was convinced we'd all be cruising in the terahertz range by now. On the bright side, we did get the dick tracy watch, penny's book from inspector gadget and the pizza machine from back to the future, so the future didn't completely disappoint.
VC is a fading model. Might be rude to say it here, but at least call it what it is. Money costs more than ever, why take on that stress?
All it has ever required was money and the willingness to gamble it.
Re:YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki is stepping down on Thursday February 16, 2023 @12:38PM (#34822084)
Good riddance.
Re:Gary Hunt -the Messi of cliff diving on Thursday February 16, 2023 @12:34PM (#34822015)
Somewhat related, Monster bev has a 'no nerds' policy. Just tongue in cheek I emailed them about sponsorship for an OSS project that was practically built by Monster Ultra Fiesta and the email response spelled it out in no uncertain terms, no nerds.
Re:Gary Hunt -the Messi of cliff diving on Thursday February 16, 2023 @12:31PM (#34821962)
So we're just editorializing titles now? The title of the article is "No coach, no agent, no ego: the incredible story of the ‘Lionel Messi of cliff diving’"

Rules are rules. Mark it zero.

Tell me the price, make the host and tennant have a singular universal set of expectations. It's not hard. Holiday Inn Express has been getting my business lately. Everything is labeled, no wild sudden items after checkin like "don't forget to put the back door mat on the balcony railing so the racoons don't run off with it".

Everything that made AirBNB cool at first eventually made it bad inevitably. Glad to have made friends with hosts along the way before it went sour.

My dog only knows allegory of the treats
So give them all self-driving upgrades free of charge. problem solved.
I'm no Dr. Maximillian Arturo but when I think of the big bang, I think of a rubber ball being bounced - When it bounces, there is a moment of compression, singularity, to which it springs back and gains distance, then regresses back to be compressed again. My theory doesn't say much about other dimensions, but there are many big bangs, happening all the time. I think the spreading of the universe leads to a contraction, then a singularity, then another bang and redistribution of starstuffs for the round of the game.
How many Americans speak Spanish? How many Americans speak Urdu? How about Pashto or Punjabi?
Im seeing a pattern of tech companies going public the shitting the bed every time. Digitalocean, Rackspace, the list goes on.

Folks, stop doing this. This is squarely the fault of the VC-Startup overleveraged model where the public listing or SalesForce acquisition is the end goal but its about the most disingenuous and disrespectful thing you can do to the user these days because it's so tried and true what happens next.

Haha, sorry, where are my manners.. ahem.. Blood for the blood god!
