Re:I Switched to Brave Browser on Monday September 28, 2026 @04:15PM (#49883725)
Still needing some work (part 2 coming) but Brave has Containers support.

Something already included in iOS is App Privacy Report feature.

Re:Qualcomm cancels Snapdragon Dev Kit, refunds all orders on Thursday October 17, 2024 @02:57PM (#41872668)
Docker on macOS doesn't have the same underlying system support as on Linux, which is where Docker originated.

The Docker experience on macOS is also marred by the fact that Docker Inc. appears to have limited interest in their Docker Desktop offering, whereas a third-party alternative like Orbstack provides a much better experience.

Re:Restic: Backups done right on Sunday October 13, 2024 @02:35PM (#41830358)
Been using Restic for a while but I was wondering how does it compare to:

- Rustic https://rustic.cli.rs

- Kopia https://kopia.io

Got time to test it and it works.

2 Ch 48kHz for output and 1 Ch 48kHz for input while using Airpod 2 on Sequoia. Be aware that the app must request a high bitrate for this to work.

Example: you need to use Safari for Google Meet. It doesn't work with Chrome.

Sorry to crash your launch but this is supposed to be fixed in the new version of MacOS Sequoia + AirPods 2

https://www.headphonesty.com/2024/07/apple-solves-bad-airpod...

I'm still on Sonoma for work reason so I didn't test it.

The initial investigation which triggered the arrest was made by the OFMIN ("Office spécialisé dans la lutte contre les violences faites aux mineurs" basically the government branch tracking and fighting CSAM).

Supposedly, Telegram (and by definition of the french law, the CEO) did not respond to requests for takedown of harmful content (or not enough or faster?) from the the OFMIN. This triggered another investigation looking globally at how Telegram handle content moderation on the public part of Telegram (Channel) which lead to all others charges of complicity.

This is basically the CEO taking the fall because the (unreachable by french law) Telegram company is not on french soil and he made the mistake on landing here.

I use OTP Auth, it doesn’t get updated much but still maintained. I consider it « feature complete ».

What is harder? I have a setup just like that. Create VM, use open wrt image as disk Vm, configure some passthrough for the nics and press start?

Updates are as easy as other device (press button on web interface or use openwrt cli)

IMO, owrt runs best on x86 (it’s your usual Linux kernel after all) and you get the best support and performance. You also avoid a lot of all the bugs related to embedded development with custom SoC, internal switch, vlans, flash layout, possibility of brick, bootloader stuff, etc.

Re:Brave appears to install VPN Services without user consent on Wednesday October 18, 2023 @05:12PM (#37934843)
Most voiced complaints are (as neutral as possible):

- past CEO personal belief on LGTB rights

- If opted in, blocking ads while showing their own ads as system notification (ads are not being replaced in page)

- hijacking typed-in domains in the address bar by adding their affiliate code on select domains related to crypto (reverted after backslash)

- Tips (using their crypto coin BAT) to Content Creators not using Brave being held indefinitely until withdrawn by Creator (behavior changed after backslash)

and now:

- VPN services being installed automatically if browser has admin rights on Windows.

Re:OpenWrt 23.05 on Friday October 13, 2023 @02:31PM (#37873873)
You can actually if you didn't expand your partition and keep the default layout. Use the firmware builder to build a customized image with your needed packages.

Edit: ah I didn't see that you run openwrt on baremetal...

Re:OpenWrt 23.05 on Friday October 13, 2023 @01:43PM (#37873357)
Unfortunately, yes. On top of that, they keep adding new devices in RC, keep bumping the kernel version (minor), introducing new code base (such as the new refactor on hostapd/ucode/netifd) and sometime cherry picking commits from master which I would have not chosen (not just bug fixes but features).

Don't get me wrong though, I very happy that such project exists but OpenWrt could be more stable and reliable with a better workflow. Anytime you flash a new version, you have this small fear of bricking your device (especially the exotic ones as Openwrt mainly relies on external testers).

Re:OpenWrt 23.05 on Friday October 13, 2023 @10:02AM (#37870748)
Caution advised for people jumping early, the Release Candidate 4 was released only ~10 days ago and didn't have the usual long testing period (usually month). More, the devs introduced major refactors late in the release cycle.

RC4 changelog includes bump to major components, most notably: hostapd, ucode, ubus, netifd.

Ads blocking on Safari browser is complete since iOS 15 when Apple allowed custom extensions to be added to the browser.

Nowadays, ads blocker use a mix of Content blockers rules (1) and an Safari extension (2) to block ads.

Re:A secret macOS tool – networkQuality on Thursday May 25, 2023 @07:42AM (#36069473)
On the last pi, the eth port is on a pci express bus. For routing usage, you will need to either have to add a usb3-eth adapter or run "router-on-stick" with a single eth port and VLAN.

Or, you could also look at the NanoPi R4S or upper model with multiple eth and 1 Gbit capable SQM.

Re:What happened with Asus routers this morning? on Thursday May 18, 2023 @02:11PM (#35991876)
There is two way of installing OpenWrt on x86:

1. Use the ext4 image and extend the main partition to the full size of the disk. This requires a lot of "fiddling" later in case of upgrade (as parent wrote).

2. Use the combined squashfs image and don't touch the image layout (no resizing, keep the ~100 MB free default / partition). Easy upgrade experience like other embedded devices (get image, open ui or ssh, upload, flash, reboot, done). Oddly, this isn't made clear by the official Wiki at all and the simplest option.

IMO, the best configuration is running your x86 box with Proxmox and run the squashfs OpenWrt in a VM. There is no need for more than 100 MB of space and if you need to install so many packages or apps, better create another VM and use a standard Linux distro. It will also be more standard for many apps to be installed on a full fledged OS instead of the custom OpenWrt layout.

You only need 2vcpu and 256 MB of ram to run standard OpenWrt at 1 Gbps (SQM included if you have a recent CPU). The rest of your box ressource can be used for anything you want.

Re:What happened with Asus routers this morning? on Thursday May 18, 2023 @09:02AM (#35987272)
Actually, there is a large number of manufacturers using OpenWrt as a baseline for their firmware. Unfortunately, these are often outdated version of a forked OpenWrt with heavy modifications to include firmware blob for hardware acceleration and such.
Re:What happened with Asus routers this morning? on Thursday May 18, 2023 @08:55AM (#35987196)
Are you sure you are using an official OpenWrt image? Stable is still 5.10 and Snapshot (master branch) is 5.15.

6.x kernel is not expected to land anytime soon (late this year or early next year maybe?)

If you have a 6.x kernel, this is probably a fork of OpenWrt.

Re:A secret macOS tool – networkQuality on Sunday May 14, 2023 @06:10PM (#35941786)
Something similar to the RPI 4 can already handle 1 Gbits SQM in pure software (CPU).

Cooling pump failure lead to water leaking into the UPS room. Batteries caught fire and firefighters can't access the room. Fire is contained although.

Re:OpenWRT 22.03.4 on Tuesday April 18, 2023 @07:34AM (#35612592)
Just a warning, this point release has a breaking change for a bunch of devices (ipq40xx: MR8300, EA8300, EA6350, and maybe more).

The result is a soft brick of the router if you try to upgrade.

The fix has been released in master and branch 22.x but there is NO official stable firmware with the fix currently.

The faulty firmwares are still up (4 days currently)

IMHO, the handling of this is pretty bad as the bug was known beforehand, there was a fix or a rollback fix but none was taken into account.

Wireguard is a small team (I think) and they are actually focusing on other platform right now but they will get back to Windows.

https://lists.zx2c4.com/pipermail/wireguard/2022-September/0...

Been using Shut Up 10 for a while and I confirm it's a great tool that doesn't nuke your system.

My current Windows 11 (latest version) was upgraded since the first released version of Windows 10 (2015). It survived two CPU changes, one MB change and it's still working fine. Pretty amazed by that.

If you are looking for a simple and light firewall (but still better than Windows Firewall), I recommend using Simplewall. It does not require a kernel extension and works with the API provided by Windows to do network filtering.

Re:Europe braces for mobile network blackouts on Thursday September 29, 2022 @10:50AM (#33021507)
Indeed, a large part of cell towers are hosted on the rooftop of residential buildings and mostly connected to the same electrical network.

In France, most homes have a smartmeter (called "Linky") and these could be used to have very precise load shedding (they communicate with PLC) but I believe this feature is not available or developed (yet?).

They actually do handle canvas fingerprinting (I don't know to what extend):

https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/wiki/Fingerprinting-P...

and a bunch of others fingerprinting methods.

There is also CGNAT which is used by mobile provider and increasingly on fixed line internet.
