News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I agree with you. CIA is much worse. Sinaloa's evil is regional, CIA's evil is global.
Would it be ok if Facebook hired someone who was part of the Sinaloa Cartel?

If you hire ex-CIA, that tells me everything about your ethics (or lack there of).

cia is an organization that uses torture (among other unethical things). if you ever worked for such an organization, I'm not even looking at rest of your cv. your ethics are clearly lacking.
this particular report is accurate.
If you were previously part of an organization that violates human rights, I have every right to hold it against you.
Tell that to China, they seem to be doing fine without Google/Amazon/Facebook.

Of those companies, Google is probably the only one you can't remove without effort.

But this article was about Facebook. Why should we allow Facebook to operate on our country given that they hire from the CIA?

also accurate
I live in a country that is not USA. Why should we allow a company led by CIA agents to operate in our country?

> Almost every analyst agrees that

First rule of international conflicts: analysts in the press are almost always off by several orders of magnitude.

Specifically, these analysts told us: (1) Russia would take Ukraine in days (didn't happen) (2) Russia would collapse under sanctions (didn't happen) (3) A breakthrough in Mariupol was imminent (didn't happen) (4) Russian advance would grind to a halt (didn't happen)

I'm probably missing a few.

Also I'm old enough to remember that analysts were telling us that Saddam had WMDs :)

Edit: also in 2020 as Azerbaijan was crushing Armenia in the Karabakh War, analysts in the press were still echoing Armenian state propaganda.

I can confirm this story by looking at the guys linked in page.

Last I checked Russia was still making progress. Unlike the first days, they are not rushing, but taking their time to eliminate defenders with artillery strikes.
EU is one of the largest consumer markets there is. US Tech companies are probably regretting the day they left China. They won't make the same mistake again.
you work at facebook?
These rules only apply to large organizations: "gatekeepers" that have massive global revenue and market power.
These regulations apply only to "Gatekeepers", meaning large companies with huge revenue and market power.
Re:Why we ignore thousands of daily car crashes on Friday July 22, 2022 @09:44AM (#32191798)
Being car critical is more than just a safety issue. I moved from the US to Germany and exchanged commuting by car to commuting by bicycle. The positive impact on my quality of life is impossible to put into mere words. It's huge.

Designing cities/towns where you don't need a car is one of the best things a society can do.

My field (theoretical physics) has the opposite problem. Almost all tools support only Linux but university infrastructure and incoming students are Linux-illiterate. A Linux strategy would greatly improve the quality of education.

Thankfully the EU is stepping up.
The European Union is a huge market. If Google or Apple doesn't comply then they say goodbye to those profits.
This law is also hitting Google in a big way. Google has to give up their monopoly on many areas.
Those of us who are not American prefer that the internet is not owned by a small number of American megacorps. EU is responding to that.
Apple loves to claim that Apple is more secure, without offering any data to back it up.
OP made an unsubstantiated claim that Apple products are more secure. I pointed that out.
Apple has not established any meaningful privacy guarantees. It's just PR.
Software piracy is good.
Chat control looks dead. (fingers crossed)
This is opening the market. A few megacorps have created walled gardens that prevent competition. EU finally says "no more".
Apple has been hacked and is no better than Android.
