Now that's a culture thing. I've always been taught never to pull a gun unless you are ready to shoot someone. That's why I don't have one.

The issue that the police in UK fire their guns a few orders of magnitude less might have something to do with it. It makes no sense to dive into statistics as to encounters and guilt and race and what not. Police in US is seen as adversial because they tend to shoot people and that's the core problem. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/uk-police-sho...

Where did you read that? How many were in the sample, how long was the diet, was it a double-blind test, what was the significance of the find? That's exactly his point: people write a lot of stuff on the internet that they believe or think is true. It might even work on them because of placebo efect. But it does mean these statements are facts.

Science has gaps because scientist do not know things. Non-scientist going "based on what happened to my cousin, this must have been what happened" is not going to fill the gaps in knowledge.
Re:A chef who’s debunking detox, diets and wellness
on Sunday June 25, 2017 @01:22AM (#14628756)
That's exactly his point. There is no scientific evidence that this happens systemically, i.e. "Keto will lead to weight loss". That does not mean it does not or that you can't lose weight. There's just no evidence.
Re:The slow death of the electric guitar
on Saturday June 24, 2017 @02:11AM (#14624575)
Hands up if you have actually ever thrown away a guitar? It's rather big it's bulky and there's few things that can go badly wrong. You sell it or hand it down. I've just rescued a kickass guitar from a pawn shop and it'll be serving me probably as long as i play. Basically, there are enough guitars out there. The average lifetime of an instrument is going up and that's a trend that is the opposite of what the rest of the consumer goods world is seeing. No wonder business is bad. But don't confuse business with the actual instrument.
Re:Aadhaar isn’t progress – it’s dystopian and dangerous
on Sunday May 28, 2017 @01:53AM (#14433258)
Aadhaar per se is quite harmless. It is pretty much what Estonia has been doing for the past 25 years with no ill effects. Quite in contrary. The question is privacy: we have a strong personal privacy law and are moving to make things more transparent all the time. People do care about this. Whether that's the case in India and to what extent, is up to Indians to say.
Ehat I find outrageous is that Cambridge Analytica can assemble a full profile of everybody in the country and it's just progress. But, god forbid, the government institutes an identifier to provide better services!

Simple. You endanger yourself - be my guest. You endanger others, you suffer. The key role of government is to represent community interest and not vaccinating your kids is very clearly endangering others.

There is no such thing as good or bad company culture. The culture either supports the strategy or does not. Warm, fluffy and nice is an option, but there are others. A real pity the huge body of literature on this has been ignored.

There will never be any sure facts about any spy stuff. But his role as a figurehead of "look what happens in us, democracy is broken, don't blame us" message from Russia is just too golden. Stuff like that simply does not happen by accident in Russia and without fsb being involved.

There. Exactly there. We have something they don't have, thus it won't work. Do you have any evidence that there is a link to poverty in any of this? Did you not read about results in Bucharest? Have you _been_ to Bucharest? No,you guys are no special snowflakes and until somebody has tried a similar program with similar funding levels, engagement and duration and has found it not to work, you don't get to say "we have poverty".

Imagine CIA and FBI each becoming slightly more powerful than they are now and then joining forces. Now imagine there is a strong, relatively unified organised crime world that the new organisation routinely works with. And now imagine that organisation has managed to push it's head to the highest position of political power in the country. That's a bit more than digging up dirt, I'd say.
Re:Why Russia’s Economy Survives
on Sunday January 01, 2017 @05:15AM (#13295313)
That's curiously right to an extent, you know. Bread had been a symbolic thing for communists from very early days. It's price was heavily subsidised and it was one of the very few food items I actually never remember there being a shortage of. Might have been different in other parts, though. Quite in contrary: bought the cheap bread to feed their animals. One of the many curious perversions of the Soviet economy.
Re:Why Russia’s Economy Survives

Having lived in that country, no, it was not fine. Queues for basic foodstuff, severely limited access to services, blatant lack of any manfucatured goods, horrendous public infrastructure etc. are not the signs of a "fine" economy. When a world superpower has to carry out a "food programme" to feed the population in the 80s, it kinda speaks for itself.

It's the key problem indeed. It is not the party leadership who wants to alter your way of life. It's the life that is changing. Automation, solar, energy storage and an increasing tension between finite resources and exponential growth all are altering their way of life. It is ok to want to stick to way things have worked in the past but it is not ok to ignore the world as it changes around you. In twenty years, the world as they know it will be gone. The longer that simple fact is ignored the harder the fall becomes once reality can no longer ignored.
Re:The Future of APIs: APIs aren’t the endgame they won't stay forever
on Monday December 19, 2016 @11:47AM (#13212689)
This would be all good, if the goal was to have computers talk to other computers. In real life, typically organisations start talking to other organisations and _maybe_ there will be computers involved eventually. Most of the integration complexity is building a technical and functional clutch so two organisations can talk but do not leak too much (dynamic) complexity across their boundaries. And that does not lend itself well to automation.

It's not that bad. Toyota Production System is taught as part of an MBA curriculum in better schools. Like it says in "Skunk Works", 2/3MBA=BS. The trouble is deciding which part that is. The best schools, in my experience, have realized that.

The statement that "all HSMs and smartcards are the same" shows limited understanding. High-end HSMs can take 1000s of hits per second, a smartcard only a few.

Have you ever tried to inpelement a modified d'hont method manually? There are always computers involved. Counting hundreds thousands of votes manually will always yield an error that can be exploited. Voting as a concept has changed beyond what mr. Halderman is willing to admit. Let's say you have widespread electronic id and electronic voting. In isolation, this sounds mad. In conjunction with physical voting and common use of eid, not so much.
