Re:Ask HN: How do you research large appliances? on Sunday October 15, 2017 @03:40PM (#15478891)
In the past, I have asked family, friends, and coworkers for their recommendations... in addition to looking online at count and average of reviews.

I also search on the internet to find out if there are problems with the particular model number of product line I'm looking into. (I do the same for buying cars.) Look for product recalls, too.

Best of luck!

LinkedIn is pretty good at getting you spammed out to recruiters. Be careful, though. Do some research before you start negotiating benefits and pay. Know what you are worth!!

Maybe you work with some consultants at your current job? Maybe ask one of them to circulate your CV to their agencies. They often get in-roads to other companies before they go to the public via things like Monster or Dice.

Xing is pretty good in Europe.

Re:Ask HN: Recommended conferences for a senior SRE? on Sunday October 15, 2017 @03:26PM (#15478795)
Well, "i don't think he will enjoy himself there"... what's the goal? Is it to learn something or to have fun? ;) ;)

I would recommend stepping a little outside his/her comfort zone and learn something completely different or adjacent to the current skill-set. For example, if the primary end-user of his efforts is a VPC on HyperV, adjacent: go to a Microsoft virtualization conference; completely different: go to vmWorld.

Also consider locale and time of year. Vegas can be brutal in the summers, but the fall and spring are Goldilocks.
