but only because of tariffs, not VAT system. we pay VAT regardless from where the good came from.

Re:TikTok goes dark in the US on Sunday January 19, 2025 @09:27AM (#42757270)
the point is that US has clear and direct influence to twitter/facebook/instagram algorithms and recommendations and they can suppress one topic or another. it is not the case with tiktok, and this is primary reason for this ban

the same argument was about Russia and west relationship with it in the last 20 years, look what we have now

I agree.

So much bitterness and toxicity here, it is even surprising to me.

Sure, in current climate people are upset about economics and whole situation in general, but still it was unpleasant to read comment section here...

just want to send you some moral support.

I have more than two years of sobriety already, time flies incredibly fast.

if it will get hard, keep reminding yourself that even this worse feeling is still better than being drunk. at least it helped to me and then lows became much smaller over time.

it gets better!

Re:Golang and Containers Perf Gotcha – Gomaxprocs on Tuesday November 26, 2024 @12:51PM (#42247989)
how long ago you were a junior engineer?

I suspect it was possible because availability/performance requirements were different.

also-I think your defined problem is partially caused by developers themselves: if you give them simple (even if it is challenging) project, they get bored and start creating problems themselves to make project "worthy" of their time

Re:Swift 6 on Tuesday September 17, 2024 @04:13PM (#41572193)
did not find anything metioned about namespaces/packages support? quite disappointing :( this is the main disadvantage for my tastes
yeah and do you realise what you are suggesting?

your proposed change will take decades to rework cities to move away from car-centric city design, to introduce public transportation, to rework current districts, to move shopping malls/restaurants closer to living districts etc.

all of this just because you wanted to make stricter insurance just to make it more (by how much?) efficient for insurers, so that they would make more profit.

Re:KeyDB – multi-threaded Redis fork by Snapchat on Sunday May 21, 2023 @05:46AM (#36019326)
not do dismiss anything or what..

but how does this kind of multithreading (one thread per core) is better than proper multithreading (many threads per core)?

and then inflate "active user" stats, which then can be manipulated to use for advertisement budgets/pricing..

convenient :)

Re:The Long Demise of the Stretch Limousine on Sunday April 30, 2023 @08:15PM (#35767772)
you just described any taxi driver or uber. uber even has separate category for more luxury :D

of course it is a strech but still I think valid point

third one is almost like in james bond movies when you barely make it but you succeed etc :D
Re:Just Use a Monorepo on Friday January 13, 2023 @05:54AM (#34366175)
then you are doing at least one thing wrong..

software versioning was invented long time ago and we survived.

people implement distributed monoliths and then complain that polyrepo sucks :)

I want to vote "keep Musk as CEO" just to give him more rope
I dont have detailed knowledge, but rating agencies clearly violated their duties by providing AAA rating to junk
Re:Twitter is limiting Mastodon Twitter Crossposter on Saturday December 03, 2022 @05:50AM (#33842483)
get a lot of users by building good product, instead of restrictions
depends on how you define "version" here. seems that github took "version changes when backwards compatibility is broken" version which can mean that you can deploy 20 new features but if those are new then "version" does not change.

that would be my guess

isn't it that all businesses are for growth? apple is expected to grow too, but I would not call it as startup..

I have'nt seen any (except non-profit ones) company which would intentionally claim " we are aiming and loweri g our revenue" or "let's keep it as it is" :)

Re:Ask HN: How did you find joy in life? on Sunday October 30, 2022 @05:34PM (#33398977)
i don't find joy in life. sometimes I get a feeling of purpose, but even this does not bring joy because in many cases it's a sad situation.
it gets a bit tricky when you ask urgent question to colleague and he is not responding to you for 30 minutes.
well balancing is done on DNS level, and it’s not required to have literal loadbalancer.
ebooks all the way. seems wasteful when after two years the book becomes outdated and you need newer version of it.
Re:Coinbase lays off around 1,100 employees on Tuesday June 14, 2022 @07:37PM (#31747377)
it is poor argument. you cant see wifi but it exists.

if your friends are fine does not mean that there are no issues there. plenty of news articles were published about inhumane working conditions where people cannot go to toilet even.

Re:Coinbase lays off around 1,100 employees on Tuesday June 14, 2022 @07:32PM (#31747328)
we can also flip a question: how do you prevent a scenario where bezos or musk achieve so much wealth that they can purchase everything? to own all corporations and if somebody will create a competitor that competitor gets destroyed by shady practices so it gets impossible to have free market?
Re:Coinbase lays off around 1,100 employees on Tuesday June 14, 2022 @07:29PM (#31747294)
internet was created by two universities, not private companies.

and usually universities are funded by governments.

private companies ruined internet actually.

Re:Coinbase lays off around 1,100 employees on Tuesday June 14, 2022 @07:25PM (#31747262)
I think most of this sentiment comes not because of wealth in itself but how it was achieved.

majority of billion dollar companies are associated with bad behaviour : anticompetitive practices, shady deals, government subsidies etc. amazon got billions in subsidies just for opening second headquarters. amazon is selling ripoffs of big brands. worker rights abuses. microsoft did many things to eliminate competition. list goes on and on. and I’m not even talking about uber’s shady projects to avoid government agencies.

so when success gets achieved by scams and shady behaviour, probably it’s not much to celebrate and reward.
