(apparently, the same page showed 9% for Russia in early 2025, so, yeah, low trust)
Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:12AM (#50303399)
Thank you. It's been a while since that paper was published )

I was interested in the number for Russia; 2 out of 4 mobile networks do not provide ipv6, and wired network ipv6 availability depends on provider; provider-supplied routers generally disable ipv6 anyway. So the 78% seems high.

Could be that this is measured from youtube; people use vpns to go there, and those typically have ipv6. That would mean that country is tracked by account, not source ip.

I wonder how they measure.

note that the volume of EU and US support to Ukraine is obviously calibrated to the same goal.

Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:46AM (#50101835)
> Self-hosting e-mail seems like a lot of work for very little benefit. I cannot risk not being able to send or receive e-mails.

I do not understand the combination of these two sentences. The second is the reason to self-host email, and the first is somehow about not self-hosting email?..

> how all of this could run on 16 GB RAM

apart from Frigate (I've never run something like that, so I don't know), all this should fit in, like, 4 GB. Services are cheap.

Lol.

does it achieve token efficiency? vs something like maki? It's not at all clear what the method of that "efficiency" is.

my main issues with maki are that the line editor (what you use to enter your prompts) is very barebones, copy-paste is broken (no middle-click paste, or copy to PRIMARY; implicit copying to CLIPBOARD that can only be used with a mouse), and scrollback is not native. So it's not a real cli, but some sort of weblike tui.

I tried 3code; it does not mess with selection, but code printed in the conversation has | markers in every line, and is thus uncopyable in practice. Don't know how to use that.

At least GNOME 1 enjoyers seem to have aged out of these discussions.
Re:Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop on Thursday September 24, 2026 @04:43PM (#49836505)
Works on Wayland. Doesn't work in some assclown programs; e.g. claude attempts its own copy-to-clipboard feature, which goes around primary.
Re:Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop on Thursday September 24, 2026 @06:52AM (#49828849)
I don't understand your initial comment at all, then. You want touchpads to have features they already have, which you haven't tried, because you don't have a touchpad?..

Or was there a different meaning?

Pinch-to-zoom is handled by libinput, and exposed to gtk apps. Works fine in firefox. Works in GtkWebkit views. works in Loupe the image viewer. works in Gnome Maps. Even works in Emacs, ffs.

Are you on X or smth?

The Convention for the Suppression of the Circulation of and Traffic in Obscene Publications, which is ratified by most countries, and only denounced by Denmark, Germany, and The Netherlands, bans most porn.

There are some enforcement issues.

This post is _about_ how that is both possible and common.

Only GPL is somewhat immune, because Stallman was always right.

Lol.

Worked after a couple of tries. Love how the pictured creepy furry pushes blame on the "administrator".

Re:On Really Trying (2009) on Friday September 11, 2026 @04:17AM (#49655110)
The kids of everyone on that flight went on to good educations and some measure of success. It takes a lot of effort to fuck up. That is the privilege, yes.

Attributing that success to strict parenting and hard work requires quite a lot of extra argument, which the thread starter does not have. Refusing humanity of people who were not on the flight, and did not achieve the same success, is something else entirely.

Re:On Really Trying (2009) on Thursday September 10, 2026 @01:59AM (#49639008)
Of course everyone is influenced by their parents and grandparents. That does not mean their achievement is yours.

The person I was replying to started the comment chain from an abhorrent position of Social Darwinism. Failing to see their privilege, and failing to distinguish their lives from their grandparents' is very common for people holding those opinions.

What's the point of getting a DRMed e-book from a library, and then converting it? You are not supporting the author, you are not supporting the library, and you are not even being a good boy, legally. (You also typically get worse files than you'd get through other means)

At that point, there's an IB team handling the deal, an LLC holding the money, and probably several banks holding its accounts. Few banks are happy to handle that kind of concentration in a retail sight account.
Re:Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @04:51AM (#49430808)
Calls are implemented differently across clients, threads only sometimes work. And, apparently from your comment, there's only ever going to be one encryption algorithm, because cryptography is a solved problem now?..

Matrix is in the same place wrt feature mismatches. It's a quality of the problem, not of the solution. I actually think XMPP does a better, more structured job here.

I still don't see how Framework's relative youth compensates my issues.
