Considering the state of the higher bands lately, i'd stick with commercial solutions like garmin inreach for any kind of emergency situations.

For playing with ham radio, you can just play with ham radio, it's been done for decades. No encryption on ham bands anyway.

AfD is a result of people wanting something and the government doing the opposite... this means that people are looking for an Alternative (intentionally capitalized here).

People just want a nice cozy job, enough money to get an apartment/house, buy the basics they need and live in a safe environment. If you provide those, no one is looking for alternatives.... when one of your bigger companies announces letting go of 100k people in the next few years, when you need concrete blocks protecting your chistmas markets, when you're deciding between eating and paying for diesel for your car to get to work, then you're looking for Alternatives.

I mean... currently any cop can do that, and it's a lot easier to bribe a single cop than to break into flock network.

https://edition.cnn.com/2026/08/26/us/flock-kentucky-police-...

A single cop can do it 2000 times it seems before they get caught

And it's not a lone case: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2026/08/02/how-pol...

Re:Let's make quality the norm again on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @09:43PM (#49721177)
To be fair, mandatory warranty has added a lot to that.

Most larger electronics (washing machines, fridges, dryers, ovens, etc.) have a mandatory 5y warranty in most european countries, and since the profit margins are so low, even the cheapest washing machine (~250eur range) has to survive the daily use of a family with three kids (or even multiple daily uses) for at least five years, since even a single replacement/repair eats away profits of dozens others sold.

"back in the time", you'd skip the cheapest stuff, now i just say "buy the cheapest one, it'll work for at least five years", and in 99.9%, it's actually true.

Re:Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @09:03AM (#49711932)
But all those political divisions are a result of national politics of those countries. People want higher wages, less taxes, affordable housing, more recently cheaper gas/diesel, and in the last decade (or more in some places), less foreign migrants. If no other political party will do anything about that, people are forced to vote for Alternatives (intentionally capitalized).

Especially after all the anti-russian propaganda being false ("three days of rockets left", etc.), after double standards ("ukraine is being attacked, we must help them!", vs "israel is commiting a genocide, we must continue selling them weapons", and "iran was attacked by our buddies, let's send nato (uk, etc) planes to shoot down their counterattacks"). Americans started a war that hurts us every time we go to a gas station and no politician even points a finger at them, no sanctions, no nothing.

It's not russia exploiting the divisions, it's the eu governments being incompetent to the levels never seen before, be it local national governments or EU levels (eg. 3eur customs on everything from china, chat control, etc.).

Look at this for example: https://cbnunfiltered.com/macrons-approval-rating-falls-to-h... macron has 16% approval rating, while 81% see him "unfavorably"... how shitty of a politician do you have to be to not step down when 81% of the country hates you?

If the governments listened to what people wanted and did at least something in that direction (again, top paragraph), people would not be looking for Alternatives (again, intentionally capitalized). Since they don't the Alternatives are the only thing left.

Re:US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @08:48AM (#49711733)
I always find it funny here, how out of all the targets "the enemy" could hit, HN-er is afraid they'll hit the datacenters :)

You don't need space weapons to hit datacenters, you need one van full of explosives and someone willing to die to deliver it to a datacenter.

To temporarily disable them, you just need a cheap drone with some explosives.

Re:Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @08:36AM (#49711605)
...or blame russia!

(Some media literally blamed putin because people voted for afd in the recent state election in germany).

Re:Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @08:34AM (#49711584)
The easiest way to hide the incompetence of local european politics, be it expensive diesel or the upcoming economic prices is to blame it all on russia.

Volkswagen is laying off 100k of workers, because they can't make cars people can afford anymore... blame russia! Germans fed up with merz and vote afd? Russia! Macron doesn't even have 20% of support in polls anymore? Russia! Stub your pinky on the corner of the bed? russia!

Re:Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @08:26AM (#49711501)
It could also be kids doing it "for the lolz", like in slovenia:

https://www.rtvslo.si/crna-kronika/na-zelezniski-progi-iz-ce...

similar thing happened next to a minority area where they put railroad ties (the big wooden things, usually supporting the tracks) on the tracks themselves, and well, that even got politicized for the location reasons.

Re:Google no longer provides direct URLs in search results on Saturday September 12, 2026 @04:12PM (#49676703)
What bombed country benefits from US? Afghanistan? Iraq? Iran? Yemen? Venezuela? Syria? Yemen? How do they benefit? Destroyed infrastructure is somehow helping them? Americans stealing their resources if they decide to occupy the country? How? Win-win in iran how exactly? US just proved to the rest of the world that you need nukes to be safe from americans, and even then they'll sanction you to hell if possible, just because you're not bending over for them.

I'm from the border of central europe and balkans, I don't benefit at all, it just costs me money to pay for a van full of soldiers every time americans decide to occupy some country half the planet away.

Many fish can be farmed easily.

If we continued as hunters-gatherers we'd do the same with many other animals, but we instead decided to farm them so the other species can survive.

On the other hand, there are wild boars roaming my country in numbers that should be reduced, but somehow very few people want to eat them and they're causing a problems. Bear meat is a bit more popular, but killing off excess bears is a hot topic every year. Meanwhile horse meat is more easily available over here.

Re:Google no longer provides direct URLs in search results on Saturday September 12, 2026 @08:09AM (#49671502)
But that's true for google too?

Ok, maybe not the neighbor (yet), but US has an open war with Iran (and has bombed a few others also) but it also threathens to annex its neigbor to the north plus another island country.

Sure, americans might consider themselves to be "the good guys", but the rest of the world doesn't.

That's why now we need gigabytes of ram to do the same thing we managed in 128Mb back then. I mean sure, there's an AI chatbot in your PDF viewer and ads in your start menu, but the functionality of many daily things is still the same.
https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/how-to-rep...

ip68 rated from 2020!

If you go further back, you have the whole "active" series of samsungs, eg. galaxy s5 active (ip67): https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Samsung+Galaxy+S5+Active+Batter...

Not old nokias but newer phones were.

Samsung actually made such phones even in 2020, eg the xcover pro: https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/how-to-rep... , the phone is rated for ip68, so yes, waterproof by phone standards.

Batteries always have a limited lifetime.

"back in the day" we had waterproof phones with user replacable batteries, you could just buy another battery and replace it yourself. I have no idea why we can't do this now.

Re:Notes on Private Trackers on Monday August 31, 2026 @10:37AM (#49510322)
Are you american?

Here in the balkans, if you want anything local, you must find some private sharing site/tracker/forum with magnet links/etc., since no one really leaves stuff seeding on eg. piratebay for a long time (private trackers force you in a way), so much of the stuff becomes unavailable very soon.

The new avengers movie or whatever "globally popular" will always be available on every public tracker, but trying to find a good quality version of "Hajde da se volimo" is a pain :)

That's much harder to implement. If you ban advertising eg. online casinos to underge users, the service would have to send two different ads (one 18+ and one for younger people too), and the browser would have to decide which one to play. Same for eg searching on google, browsers would have to filter out every <div> with adult content, meaning half the page would be empty, but with a browser "underage" flag, google could just turn on safe search and not allow turning it off.
I mean, so do the 14 years olds and 10 year olds, and newborns, and the ideas still separated, because future mommy and daddy didn't have sex yet.

But as a society, we've decided that 16 year olds are too young to do many proper things, be it buy alcohol in most countries, drive a car in many, open a bank account, or legally jerk off to porn. They don't watch the news, they have no recollection of previous governments and the promises that were made, never kept and are being made again, they have basically zero sense of taxes and also mostly don't pay any and have little experience with anything related to politics. Neither do most 18 year olds, but if we let them buy booze and drive, we also let them vote.

Usually the push for younger voters comes, when someone prefers a push to a generally more "left" side of spectrum, but even this is turning around, since in my country (slovenia) more and more younger voters are turning right (eg. in the last election), especially young men, since they feel left out by the "left" parties.

TBH, OS based parental filters are the optimal solution here, especially if implemented in a proper way.

Kids don't buy phones and computers, parents do. When setting up the account for the first time, the parents could set the account to be an "underage one", all the apps, browsers, etc., would get the USER_IS_UNDERAGE flag and filter content according to that. No need for every site to ask and verify the age, just set the date of birth at the time of purchase, set a parental password (for possible future changes, reselling, etc.) and prohibit formats/wipes/factory resets without a parental password being entered. The clerks in telco stores could even help with the first setup of that.

Same could be easily implemented in linux, via some user flag set by the su/sudo user during the first eg. ubuntu install.

But that's the point of democracy, whoever was interested in the isue, went out to vote, kids are too young to vote, and more than half of people interested enough to go out, voted to leave.

You personally might have wanted to remain and wanted to raise the bar, but that's undemocratic, you can't just change the rules when you don't get the outcome you wanted.

I'm not from Britain, honestly I don't care what you guys do, but a majority of voters decided in a way they did, and you have to respect that.

Re:Hacking IKEA Furniture on Sunday August 30, 2026 @09:28AM (#49498479)
That would be very expensive compared to ikea.

Look at the very popular Lack table, it's made from cardboard hexagons with four pieces of wood-like thing in the corners to hold the legs. You can't make that yourself for cheap, and just the material cost in eg. wood, would be more expensive than the full table in ikea.

Otherwise, there are many youtube channels specializing in woodworking where you can learn all the basics to design your own furniture, but it won't be cheap.

Re:Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU on Saturday August 29, 2026 @08:38AM (#49489444)
Why do they need the Horizon programs? Switzerland is a rich country, in any pan-EU project scheme, they'd pay more than they'd get back.
Re:Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU on Saturday August 29, 2026 @08:34AM (#49489411)
What agreement? To join the EU you must change a lot of internal structures in your own government first, a lor of regulations must be changed to align with EU versions, laws have to be changed, even basics, like drivers licences and other documents.

Why spend millions if not billions on all that, impose laws that are maybe bad for normal people, and then figure out that people don't actually want to join the EU?

Re:Disrupting a new covert influence campaign from Russia on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @05:51AM (#49446339)
Why just covert?

There are proper overt examples: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Free_Europe/Radio_Libert...

Russia is just the current boogeyman, where you can call anything you don't like "russian propaganda" (like fighting for workers rights in US a few decades ago was just "commies", same for trying to stop the war in vietnam... "commies" everywhere).

Re:Where Did All the Public Bathrooms Go? on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @09:41AM (#49433932)
It's not collectivism, it's the "no consequences" thing.

"back in my time" in what used to be yugoslavia, it was perfectly acceptable for an adult to slap/hit a kid who caused problem or was destroying stuff, if a dad had to come to school because the kid did something bad, that was a horrible punishment, plus no leaving the room after, no toys, no bike, no outside play, no nothing for some time.

Now? Parents protect their idiot vandal kids, threathen the school with lawyers, even if cops bring home a kid selling like weed and vomiting red wine, the parents will blame everything else except their little sunshine.

Even academically, kids can't read anymore, and we just push them on, no repeating and losing years, no nothing, here's a "2" (passing grade), go to next year, and after a few more pushes, you'll be someone elses problem, illiterate or not.

Re:Why some US restaurants are banning tips on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @06:36AM (#49431577)
There's a bunch of them, but the tip offers are usually on the newer touchscreen (probably android based) ones.

The old ones (never seen the tip option on those... for now): https://www.simple-shop.si/en/pos-terminal-tcpip-en and eg https://www.unicreditbank.si/si/podjetja/upravljanje-z-denar...

The new ones: https://www.sumup.com/sl-si/karticni-citalec-terminal/ and https://besteron.com/si/pos-terminali/ (both support tips) + many other in similar designs (full front touchscreen)

I don't think square supports slovenia for now, but POS vedors add the tip option, and our restaurant owners enable it, because it doesn't cost them anything, any many (especially foreign) guests "feel bad" for choosing the zero on the screen.

Re:Why some US restaurants are banning tips on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @06:24AM (#49431479)
Somehow the "tip culture" is spreading over here too, especially in touristy areas, even the POS terminals now ask you for a tip.
You can do exactly that, yes, dd whole disk to external drive, dd it back. Of course this assumes you'll be buying the same laptop, otherwise, you'll have to reconfigure stuff, from graphics drivers, resolution etc., resize the partitions (assuming the new hdd is larger, and you can't use a smaller one).

The problem with dd is, that you can't really run it on a running system, because stuff is constantly being written to the drive (this is same for rsync too, but usualy the damage is smaller), so you have to boot a live linux from usb, dd the whole drive to an external drive, and then after swimming ashore, boot a live linux on the new laptop, and dd the backup to the new drive.

Why would recording calls not be possible anymore? On a rooted phone you can do it, some amixer and arecords might be needed, but it stores the audio of both sides.
