Re:I Dumped Apple's Fucking Word List on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @04:01PM (#50358135)
Why would “trump” be considered an offensive term? My understanding of the database is to prevent you from accidentally typing offensive or words being autocorrected to something offensive. Like if I misspell “helper” I don’t want that to be autocorrected to “hitler”.

It’s surprising to me that “trump” would get the same classification. Given that he’s the current president of the US, I’m sure people intentionally type his name all the time. I don’t want my keyboard to steer me away from writing out “trump”. And typos autocorrecting to Trump don’t seem like a big deal either. Would anyone be offended by the text “don’t forget to bring your Trump to band practice”?

It looks like they had a hard time with the magic wand, peacock-to-cat example. Despite using a very long prompt that repeatedly stresses that the video should look photorealistic and NOT like a video game, the output video looks like a video game. The model is clearly capable of generating photorealistic humans and animals, so I wonder why it struggled to do so with that particular prompt.
Re:Dream-1 on Saturday October 24, 2026 @03:24PM (#50224264)
Interesting. It actually moved the ball next to the elephant, but I guess that accomplishes the goal of the elephant and ball being next to each other. But probably not how must humans would interpret that prompt. And it continued to move both the elephant and ball after that for some reason.

Hopefully this is like the first GPT models and it gets better over time.

This is fun, and a good demonstration of Jev’s capabilities.

It’s obviously much faster than a human, but it’s interesting that it only got 7/10 right on both rounds (same as me). I’m wondering what Jev could be trusted to do reliably given these results.

I guess it wasn’t optimized for these types of trivia questions. Or maybe the image capabilities are too new and need refinement.

In my opinion the the point of the site is that Jev has knowledge on all topics that makes it hard to beat. It might not be as smart as you, but it probably has a greater breadth of knowledge.
I was confused by the chess board question too. But I do think the question is worded correctly—it’s just a little unintuitive.
Re:/dev/null: social network for developers on Friday October 16, 2026 @02:34PM (#50122449)
Much better now, thanks!

I would describe the website as “twitter for developers and uses your GitHub account for auth”. It’s a simple concept, but I think using your GitHub account to sign in is a great idea and a meaningful differentiator. Good luck!

Re:/dev/null: social network for developers on Friday October 16, 2026 @01:01PM (#50121072)
It would be nice if the website had more information about the platform before you create an account.
Re:Oldest shipwreck found off coast of Turkey on Thursday October 15, 2026 @05:29PM (#50110577)
They also found stone anchors. So you could say it’s a shipwreck where nothing is left but the anchors.

If the anchors were gone too, I would agree with you—some piece of the original ship (not just the cargo) must remain to consider it a shipwreck.

The line about “understanding the aliens” reminds me of Ted Chiang’s short story The Evolution of Human Science (2000).

Highly recommend reading it. Very prescient for something written 26 years ago.

Re:AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible on Saturday September 19, 2026 @07:31AM (#49765646)
A lot of people in the comments say that the supposedly better examples in the article are still “horrible” because they can tell they’re AI and point to things that the AI did “wrong” and a human artist would do better.

That may be true if you’re working with a top of the line artist, but in my experience the average freelance designer online is significantly worse than AI. I’ve worked with dozens of budget friendly designers on Fiverr and consistently get way worse results than I’ve gotten from AI models. Will a great human designer produce better output than an AI? Maybe, but a small local event or business probably won’t have the budget to hire them or know where to find them. It’s cheaper, faster and easier to use AI to generate something that’s good enough for their purposes.

People also point out all the little flaws in the “good” examples and cite them as obvious tells that they were AI generated. I think it would be interesting to see if people could reliably distinguish between AI generated flyers and human made flyers. Sure, sometimes it’s obvious like when the AI adds those weird, cartoony people. But if the model is told not to create designs like that and stick to the styles used in the second half of the article, I expect people would have a much harder time distinguishing the human designs from the AI designs.

Re:The Future Is for Everyone on Monday August 10, 2026 @06:37PM (#49250854)
This assumes a future where everyone is an entrepreneur, self-starter, creator or innovator. But people with the drive to create their own ideas and value account for a very small percentage of the population. Most people just want a steady paying job that they can perform well (or not work at all). I’m not sure how “putting AI in the hands of everyone” will help this part of the population. I feel like this is a really tone deaf take from Meta that doesn’t address people’s concerns around AI.
In deductive puzzle games like this, it’s nice when the hints teach you how to play the game instead of just solving the puzzle for you.

I got stuck and couldn’t figure out what to do next. Maybe as a first clue, you can highlight the next cell they should be able to figure something out about (either clear it or flag it). If they’re still stuck, then you can clear it or flag it.

Even better would be to explain the logic for why it’s safe to clear that cell or why it should be flagged, but I know that’s harder to implement.

The game is well made and has a lot of potential. Great work!

Another good feature in ColorSweeper that would be nice in your game is a “sketch” view that lets you place potential mines/fangs on the board so you can see how things would play out. Like if you put a 1-fang here and a 2-fang there, does that work with all the numbers shown.
This is fun. But I think you need a way to specify in the flag how many fangs are there. A similar modern minesweeper game is ColorSweeper.

A feature I like in that game is it will grey out numbers once you’ve sufficiently annotated the adjacent spaces.

It’s a really good game, but you need to pay $5 to get rid of ads.

Re:The Zeno's Paradox of AI on Thursday July 30, 2026 @06:07PM (#49116490)
It’s true that Claude Code will continue to suggest further things to do, seemingly forever. But I’ve never had an issue making the call of “this is good enough” or “that’s not necessary right now”. If you have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish, it’s easy to get a task 100% completely done with just a few prompts. There’s only a paradox if you don’t have a clear end state in mind and let the agent continually move the goal post of what “done” means.
Re:Changing How We Develop Ladybird on Friday June 05, 2026 @12:56PM (#48415230)
How would they know for sure if the submitted code was written by a human or AI? If they had a “no-AI” policy, there would be no way to enforce it.

The policy makes sense to me given the security concerns for the project.

The appendix has examples of the statements that led to the most disagreement:

Re:How to convert between wealth and income tax on Friday May 22, 2026 @12:05PM (#48237771)
This is wrong. You can’t convert between the two because it’s possible to have a lot of wealth with very little (even zero) income. Billionaires can completely avoid income taxes by paying themselves a very low salary and instead borrowing money against their assets (usually stock), which is not taxed as income.

This seems useful, but I don’t think this could replace most use cases for Meetup or Eventbrite.

This actually sounds more similar to Partiful, which I like for one-off events. I would describe this as an open source Partiful, but not specifically geared towards parties.

This is really cool. I’m not sure what I would ever use it for, but it’s a cool idea and seems well executed.
As someone who lives in the US, I was surprised to hear they’re facing jail time for this. In the cases I’ve heard, the company itself is sued and just has to pay damages to the victim. But I think it makes a lot of sense to hold the leaders of a company accountable for the culture they create and they should face jail time. I wonder why our laws don’t do that in the US.
I’m surprised Hey isn’t mentioned. That’s the only example I know of someone recently trying to reinvent email. Maybe it wasn’t included because it’s part of Basecamp and not its own company. But I think it’s important to discuss if your argument is that “no one has successfully reinvented email”.
Re:Ask HN: Is the header CSS broken for you? on Monday June 30, 2025 @12:10AM (#44419271)
Yes, it looks broken to me. The top article is too close to the header. I’m on iOS Safari.
Yeah. The title implies that the model has developed a scary sense of self preservation, but when you read the details it’s exactly what you said.

The conditions that elicited this response seemed very contrived to me.

Re:Animated Factorization on Wednesday May 21, 2025 @11:35AM (#44052615)
This would make a cool progress bar replacement. Replace percentage with the number of dots (0-100).
Re:Why bad philosophy is stopping progress in physics on Thursday May 15, 2025 @11:21PM (#44001534)
I’m not an expert in physics, but this seems like a misguided critique to me. My understanding is that physicists aren’t looking for “new” physics because they’re trying to upend established physics, but because they’re trying to reconcile “inconsistencies” in the standard model. Like reconciling quantum physics with general relativity. We need new physics because we know there are gaps in our current understanding of the universe. I haven’t heard about many attempts to disprove established physics. Theoretical physicists aren’t looking just trying to fill the gaps in the model.
Re:Congress Passes TAKE IT DOWN Act Despite Major Flaws on Tuesday April 29, 2025 @03:29AM (#43829622)
I agree. I generally support the EFF, but I disagree with them on this. I read through the bill and the language is very specific to revenge porn (although I’m not a lawyer). I think it would be very difficult for Trump or anyone else to abuse this law and use it for censorship.

I have friends who were the victim of revenge porn and I think this law would help them. I’m looking forward to this becoming a law.

Components look great. I would pay for these if I needed one of them for a project. It would be great if they worked in React Native too.
