Re:SponsorBlock Critical Security Vulnerabilities on Friday July 03, 2026 @09:31PM (#48781867)
SponsorBlock dev here

I never got any emails... I checked spam

But either way, this is just slop, KomoD's analysis is very good.

Everything mentioned here is intentional, SponsorBlock data is public, database dumps are published for anyone to download, and the API keys mentioned are not secret.

There are even third party sites that allow you to browse this data built on the database dumps: https://sb.ltn.fi/

Is it very trusting? Yes, but SponsorBlock is built on faith in humanity, and it's survived almost 7 years so far, with only a small amount of spammer firefighting.

The tokens are "generated" on the client, and the server just gives the client enough information to make that locally generated token become "valid", without being able to link that token to a specific validation attempt
Re:YouTube's New Hue on Thursday February 13, 2025 @01:44AM (#43033335)
youtube hasn't touched their anti-adblock code since june
uBlock Origin already blocks them by default at the request level, no need to hide the actual HTML element
Re:WhatsApp Messaging Interoperability on Thursday March 07, 2024 @06:18PM (#39635832)
DMA requires that the interoperability be at the same level of encryption than normal chats. In whatsapp's case, that means all interoperability must be E2E
It's not an open federation
There is a whitelisted set of apps in the OS. Samsung's messenger also is allowed on Samsung devices. They talked about opening the API many years ago and then suddenly stopped talking about it.

For most people, Google Messenger app now uses Google's RCS gateway anyway, so the carrier does not need to support RCS.

I do not know of anyone trying to get carrier-based RCS working with a non Google app using a custom rom with a different whitelisted set of apps, but it sounds to like maybe that would be possible

uBlock Origin filter type called has-text
On Android, I can create a PWA that runs in Firefox and it works great. Apple could easily implement the same thing

Kiwi has historically faked the version number to prevent websites from telling you to update your browser. I would assume that number is not legitimate.
Re:Adblock Plus and (A Little) More on Sunday October 22, 2023 @08:47PM (#37980381)
The name origin was used because google took it down for using the name ublock after the GitHub repo transfer
Re:Adblock Plus and (A Little) More on Sunday October 22, 2023 @05:39PM (#37979334)
It was not sold. It was transferred to a the contributor of a Safari port.

They encourage people to wait to buy their product only until they aren't able to repair their current one.
Re:Browser extensions spy on you, even if its developers don't on Friday September 01, 2023 @01:03PM (#37353452)
Mozilla reviewers do very detailed reviews. Unlike Chrome, they sometimes do manual reviews, looking for potential XSS or similar problems, and will let you know the exact line causing it. The Chrome web store is almost unmoderated though.
Re:Using Lemmy from my existing Mastodon on Friday July 14, 2023 @01:22PM (#36727006)
One cool side-effect is that existing mastodon bots (like remind bots) work seamlessly. Just ping them as normal and they will reply.
That will will be fixed Q1 next year thanks to the EU
They probably pay Adblock Plus to have bing ads whitelisted just like google does through their "Acceptable" ads program

The plugin supports replacing only titles if you prefer.
Re:DeArrow – Solving Clickbait on YouTube on Thursday June 22, 2023 @05:40PM (#36439435)
This was a purposeful choice to demonstrate the extent of the clickbait problem. Both channels have only changed their thumbnail and title style in the last few months, and previously had great titles and thumbnails.
Re:DeArrow – Solving Clickbait on YouTube on Thursday June 22, 2023 @05:29PM (#36439288)
Here is a reply I made in the past to a similar complaint

> It's not just the Linus Tech Tips or the Mr Beasts of the world doing algorithm optimized titles and thumbnails now. Even really great channels like Tom Scott, CGP Grey, and Kurzgesagt are falling for the trap now.

> And I don't blame them! That's what's needed to survive on the platform these days. It's a race to the bottom.

> DeArrow hopes to solve this. DeArrow puts everyone on a level playing field. There is no race to the bottom since no one is allowed to be algorithmically optimized. It pauses the race, and let's the true best videos rise to the top.

While a niche extension of course can't remove all bad incentives, it still brings out the videos that actually are good themselves, ignoring the branding they were put in.

Re:Show HN: Scribbler – Podcast Summaries Using GPT on Wednesday June 14, 2023 @01:58PM (#36329854)
I was referring to video, because you need to take into account visuals too. It would be simpler when it is audio-only.
They did. The mobile app by default signs you up on mastodon.social now

They did say "competitive landscape"

There are also FOSS front-ends for Google Play such as Aurora Store
Most of the carbon footprint of electronic devices is from the manufacturing.
