Re:Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:42AM (#50334787)
33 months in this corner of India, disregarding tariff rises and increased consumption.

Around 2005, Google published MapReduce, THE parallel data processing paradigm. The ecosystem from Yahoo, Hortonworks etc overshadowed Google with Hadoop, Spark etc. Google then launched both paper and product when it came to cloud scheduling and transformers.
Re:Nixpkgs for the Front End Impaired on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:54AM (#50285734)
Umm, does a Nixfile have a "grammar" of a 140000+ records and 232000 attributes from its individual packages? Can a lightweight text editor underline an error?
Re:Tasks as Code: Move Your Tickets into the Repository on Monday October 26, 2026 @04:30PM (#50250470)
I wanted to implement a similar tool in 2011, Ditz IIRC. The Redmine issue tracker was too finicky, it promised using a self-hosted and reliable repo as the source of truth and Netbeans as its frontend. I implemented Mercurial VCS and designated one machine as remote (a hghub) for ssh cloning and web interface, we didnt have any pesky subscriptions.
Do you remember the microwave antenna power stations that power from solar satellites? The Moore-like drop of solar prices killed solar satellites, solar greenhouses with turbine chimneys, TW superconductor submarine cables circling the world etc.
Missed the memo. Whats the proof of positive free cash flow?
Re:Speeding up code review with `small-change` on Friday October 23, 2026 @06:38AM (#50206888)
Did they mention 77 minutes of review time for even longer PRs?
A year back, an internet stranger's Claude reported a take-home programming assignment had an instruction (to insert a watermark). Wonder if the latest chatbots report this to user.

HowStuffWorks used to be full of expert animations of automatic transmissions and helicopters around 2006 but they had a multipart article on spontaneous combustion, with anecdotes of 1890s people who retained too much ethanol.
Re:LittleJS is 2D and 3D now on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @03:30PM (#50093643)
It will be mindblowing if the Youtube demo and screenshots were replaced with actual playable games.
Re:Python 3.15.0 on Friday October 09, 2026 @02:04PM (#50024418)
Whats your application? I'm curious.
Indian UPI is also apparently annoying Visa and Mastercard so its introducing a small charge on transactions greater than 2000 INR/20 USD.

To know another language is to possess a second soul - Big Chuck aka Charlemagne.

Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius wrote an entire journal in Greek in the middle of enemy territory. "You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think.". Historians criticize his Greek fluency.

The AI "understood" the concepts enough. It can generate readable code in new syntax like Typst, D2lang etc; refer 80 page documentation scattered across urls (looking at you AWS); clone tools from Github to find undocumented features.
Re:We Asked Starbucks Why Their 'Sugar-Free' Drinks Have Sugar on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @05:54AM (#49990491)
Thankfully, they cracked down on "no sugar added" products sweetened with evaporated cane juice.
If your heart too loves the sight of vast fields, (my clanker computed) converting all of it to solar meets 4–5× total U.S. electricity generation, agrivoltaics look nicer and can generate 3× U.S. electricity.

Re:Why didn't we get GPT-2 in 2005? on Saturday October 03, 2026 @07:45AM (#49943376)
Around 2011, my exposure to AI was like Drools planner, the predecessor of Timefold. It was to generate an ideal timetable. It used an n^2 memory heavy Rete algorithm, a scripting language in JVM to write rules with a terser syntax and simulated annealing to explore/choose states that obeyed constraints. In college AI was fancy algorithms and languages with terse syntax.

A few years later I saw - neural network projects which can do basic image recognition - a paid smartphone app that can count objects instantly - determine the mood of an online comment after you trained on a sample

I never imagined a tool that packages all knowledge and requires no training on my part.

Re:Pi 1.0 on Friday October 02, 2026 @03:24AM (#49930746)
What kind of software?
My sleep tracker registers terrible deep sleep and sometimes I jolk awake after the buzz wears off.
I have a feeling cats are evolving to avoid mice in this corner of India. I had a stray mother cat who kept kittens on the roof. The mother weighed 3-4kg and two kittens weighed 750g each. The prey skeletons around them were mostly reptiles and birds. The cats catching mice for their kittens give them an infection that kills within days.
I took Grammarly's side, since we used a few SaaS and the CFO (small company for context) revoked access and we had to beg him. Reading the comments about multiple SaaS annoying end users changed my mind.

Don't pensions have to take on riskier investments because of increased life expectancy?
Heard that proverb. I'm more inclined to believe rich families from 1400s are rich now. Family wealth can be preserved by sending spare sons and daughters to monastic life.

A targetted attack will be easy to do with an AI.
Re:Show HN: Copperhead – Hardware as Fast as Software on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @11:24AM (#49611704)
Why would somebody ever use a hosted version? I see "One-click gerber, DXF/STEP, render and BOM export" and "Altium support beyond KiCad" in cloud plans, dunno if they are compelling.
I thought meow.com is a fictional bank in this fiction. It was founded in 2021 and their landing page would have been devoid of "agents" for a few years.
Re:D2 Is Non-Profit on Monday September 07, 2026 @02:35AM (#49594674)
Tangential, do LLMs generate D2 code as easily as Mermaid and do tools like Github and Confluence render them?
Re:WebLLM: high-performance in-browser LLM inference engine on Saturday September 05, 2026 @02:28PM (#49579298)
Is there any use case/demo of lighter models like using embeddings for full text search, STT, OCR etc?
Re:We Are Rebuilding Monica on Friday September 04, 2026 @06:06AM (#49562581)
Good ol days. I bought the book about the project's failure in 2012. They mentioned Python-Wx wrapper they created and I used it for a Python project.
