Re:Privacy Guard: You Don't Need to Scan My Drivers License on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @02:10PM (#49996580)
I have a sticker (not this one but similar) and the one time I was pulled over he said nothing about it. If you have a sticker, I think most police will just type in your license number. It pulls up an exact copy in most states and they're available across states. (It's likely already on their screen from the plate scanner if you're registered to the car).

The only places I've seen photo IDs are weed stores. Screw those places. Honestly best to grow your own if it's legal in your state.

I love Drew's list. It's literally a list of "Super Chads" in the engineering world. People who have all either accomplished great things or are interesting. It his list of people he's jealous of because they're far better than he will ever be.

Drew is a potatophile who likes drawings of children. He's also a giant man child. Why is his blog still allowed on here when so many others that aren't written by nonces are shadow banned on here?

Re:Is AI Sentient on Sunday October 04, 2026 @06:51PM (#49958755)
He's dutch, and it's silly to just assume "bigoted" and/or "satire."

It's not /just/ satire, it's something way more. It's meant to make you think. If you immediately scream "REE--acism" .. you're not really thinking about all the complexities involved in his post.

Re:Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening on Sunday October 04, 2026 @01:26PM (#49955880)
It's funny you including your tracking token so Google can associate your with a graph of everyone who clicks on the link (?si=)

You really need to look up the car and a lot of people sell replacement harnesses to terminate the built-in modems with resistors.

Sometimes if you hit the sweet spot, the car has a built in modem but its on 3G or EDGE networks that have been dismantled. There are several Subaru's like this. They no longer can connect to a network or transmit data.

Personally, I'd like to see someone salvage one of these modems and try to reverse engineer it for free Internet. It will probably be low speed and they might be locked to certain hosts, but I bet you could find some way to tunnel traffic on them.

Pretty.

This reads like garbage and Lunduke already did better coverage

I just like changing my own oil. Once I bought a house and finally had a garage again, I jacked up my car and truck and changed out all the oils: rear diff, front diff, transfer case, manual transmissions (the best transmissions) ... it may take longer than just putting into one of those places, but I'm doing it myself and I know I'm doing it right. I can inspect everything and I don't have some kid scanning my VIN number and putting my car into a big marketing and tracking database.

Another one is Ariane flight V88, although that one didn't give people lethal doses of radiation.
Re:Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video] on Friday October 02, 2026 @03:58PM (#49937901)
> fascist

This word literally has no meaning anymore other than: "person who's opinions I disagree with for religious reasons I don't understand"

It's a one-word thought terminating cliche and shows one's lack of ability to think objectively or approach an argument rather than ad hominem attack the person.

Re:DHH has gone off the rails [video] on Friday October 02, 2026 @03:46PM (#49937736)
Stupid? One of my best friends, a London native, is thinking of moving back to Seattle. She jokes about needing knife proof vests when cycling in London. Moving BACK to SEATTLE. That's ... that's bad ... really bad. I don't know why anyone willingly lives in Seattle. I did it for two years and I would never go back.

If you get offended by the truth ... maybe the truth isn't the problem. Maybe it's you.

Re:'Gaming pays me double what I earned as a teacher' on Sunday September 27, 2026 @10:15AM (#49866828)
Who starts "volunteering for PlayStation's YouTube channel?" That's a multi billion dollar company who should never have volunteers for anything.

The other company mentioned, Astral Forge, only seems to have one game called Fate's Loop and it doesn't seem to be very good.

Jarvs Indie Insights seems like some started grift company. She might be making more now because it's some VC investment that overpays people. The blue hair and general feel of this piece makes it seem like fluff and diversity.

I would bet all the companies mentioned here tank in ~2 yeas. This feels more like an ad than a new article, and not a good one at that.

Re:F-Droid 2.0: A New Chapter for Android Freedom on Friday September 25, 2026 @02:56PM (#49848501)
Yes, that's how you can install an manage Molly (the open source Signal replacement). They run their own F-droid repo.
Re:Nuclear Waste Accidentally Leaked at Pacific Coast Site on Friday September 25, 2026 @11:01AM (#49845644)
Honestly 5,000 gallons from a nuclear plant into the ocean is not all that much. When refueling occurs in a reactor outage, people aren't in there wearing full suits like in the movies. They have coveralls that have to be disposed of afterwards, but the biggest thing that protects them from the radiation is the water in the reactor vessel itself.

You could probably swim on the surface of that reactor pool and be perfectly fine.

You need to end scarcity to end money. That means dilithium crystals, replicators and virtually infinite energy.

Real basic income will be a lot less like Star Trek and a lot more like The Expanse.

Also, revolutions are rarely ever started by the lower class. They're always started by the middle tier of society, enraging those helpful idiots lower than them to attack those above them. They end up with many dead and many suffering. Those who cry out for revolution have never seen the horrors of war.

> “I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell. … You people of the South don’t know what you are doing. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end. It is all folly, madness, a crime against civilization! You people speak so lightly of war; you don’t know what you’re talking about. War is a terrible thing! … War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.”

-William T. Sherman

People who could do it successfully would hardy be considered morons. That would be a genius engineer.

The general attitude in this thread against reasonable people not wanting unsustainable megaliths that produce horrible amounts of noise, and are driving up electricity prices, in their communities without any input from said community is astonishing.

HN has really gone full AI derangement syndrome (it runs both directions).

Earth will get bulldozed soon anyway to make room for that hyperspace bypass. The plans have been available in the local planning office for a while, but nobody knows about it because they're hidden in the basement and you have to go down there with a torch.
Re:You're already a Meat Proxy on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @08:17AM (#49800039)
Unreadable. x and xxcancel are blocked at work and the phone keeps popping up the stupid "open in app" bullshit. Post on your own damn website! You can use other tools to promote, but posting on the closed unreadable platform made me give up in 5 seconds. I assume it's not worth the effort to read if you didn't put in the effort to make it readable.
I dunno. I prefer the simplistic old design of 7zip. Also:

> In general, NanaZip Sponsor Edition is more like contributor's edition, but we provide a way to buy the honor and make someone look like a source code contributor, because NanaZip is always a community-friendly open-source project.
